Owner description: The Austin bridge is where nearly 1.5 million bats live.

If you are in Austin from March till late Fall and a fan of the natural world, you must make time to get over to the Congress Street bridge and watch the largest urban bat colony take flight, all 1.5 million of them, around dusk. Its an amazing sight and hundreds of watchers will gather with you to watch this spectacle of nature. However, dont be on too tight a time schedule as they can come out anywhere from 7ish to 9ish or later. And sometimes if its too late, its too dark to really see them. But its worth a second trip if you miss them.

This is the coolest thing ever!! It never ceases to amaze me. It is is a must see stop for out of town visitors. Get an Amy's icecream cone and enjoy the view.

I visited in November and I believe a lot of the bats had migrated by that time. I only saw a limited number and they all just circled under the bridge. I would probably have been more impressed if I'd been there a month earlier and walked under the bridge

What a strange and fun time to stand on a bridge over Lady Bird Lake and wait for the Sun to go down and the bats to swirl out from under the Congress Ave. bridge and start their evening feeding.

If you've never seen bats before, this is a great opportunity. If you've seen them in caves, it's fun to see them in an urban setting. Stand on the South side to see them fly out and down the lake. You can also stand below the bridge, or purchase a ride on one of the boats that do evening tours.

We stood on the bridge for an hour around sunset, with a huge crowd of tourists on the bridge and below in the water, waiting for the huge display of bats to fly out from the bridge. It never happened. We could see the bats swarming around under the bridge and hear them. I think it was too late in the season.
