Since discovering the Select Registry group of B&Bs/Inns several years ago, my husband and I have stayed almost exclusively in Select Registry properties when we've traveled. As such, we have become accustomed to the beautiful accommodations, gourmet breakfasts, and over-the-top attention to detail that most of these properties are known for. The Sanford House was a nice place to stay, but was lacking some of the crucial details we were looking for.
The Sanford House staff were lovely. We particularly enjoyed our server Jason, who waited on us both at dinner and breakfast. He was wonderfully attentive and really strove to elevate the atmosphere.
We stayed in the Regency Cottage. Our room was nicely appointed, and huge! The furniture and decor were all lovely and interesting. There were some great conversation pieces, and we enjoyed our surroundings. The bed linens were great, and we had a wonderful night's sleep.
Dinner at the in-house restaurant (not included in the price of your stay) was wonderful -- particularly the bread pudding. The restaurant is open to the public, so we were a little surprised to be one of only two couples dining that night. Perhaps people in Arlington who are looking for a "fancy" meal make the trek into either Dallas or Ft. Worth.
Another nice touch were the fresh cookies left in our room at check-in. We enjoyed them!
Some things that were lacking:
This Inn didn't have the personal feeling that other Select Registry inns are known for. We never met the innkeeper, which is something I've enjoyed in other places: meeting the innkeepers, hearing their stories, seeing their passion for what they do. Along those lines, we missed the wine & cheese reception that is common-place at other properties. It's a wonderful way for travelers to connect and make new friends, and we've really come to enjoy that. Sanford House could make this service available to their guests quite easily.
Breakfast did not meet our expectations. The eggs were powdered, the fruit was turning brown. The biscuits were wonderful, but this was a breakfast that could have easily been served at a Best Western.
Now for some picky details:
Our room wasn't terribly clean, and there was a little bug problem. There were quite a few ants in the kitchen area, and two we spotted in the bathtub. Also, there was a swarm of dead gnats in the mini-fridge.
As lovely as the interior of our room was, the outside was severely lacking. It looked like a junky old duplex. Sanford House should work to update the exterior of the cottages along the back of the property.
The neighborhood was sketchy (that's not Sanford House's fault, of course, but it should be noted.)
There was no soap in the shower, and no place to put shampoo, conditioner, etc. It would be quick and inexpensive to install some type of shelf in the shower for these items.
This is probably an overly-picky review. But like I mentioned, we've grown used to a certain attention-to-detail associated with the other Select Registry Inns we've visited. I would suggest this hotel to a friend who had a reason to be in Arlington, because all in all it wasn't a bad stay. However, this property could be absolutely fabulous with a little work.
