We used to go to White Heron Park in Anahuac and camp for the week-end when the kids were teenagers. Very good facilities including boat launch, tables and even a pavallion that could be reserved by visiting the city office. This was all some 30-40 years ago but I believe the park is still there.

Wall-to-wall-alligators, great wetlands with shorebirds at the right seasons, easy driving and viewing from the car. Plus an incredibly well-stocked shop, especially for wildlife and bird books.

This turned out to be just a bit hard to find (the guides we had were a bit vague), but it was well worth the trouble. Anahuac is a large wetlands refuge and there are several refuge roads which cut through it. We didn't have time to do much exploring, but we spent better than an hour on the loop road (which was not signed -- we deduced its location from the map). The loop road is a one-way paved road 2-3 miles long with a few areas to get out, including one nice-looking boardwalk we didn't stop at for want of time.) The area was full of birds (and on both sides of the road) and it just got better as dusk approached. Good sightlines, lots of birds, not too busy. Who could ask for more?

The park has been mostly restored since the hurricanes, and the birds are plentiful. This trip was a rainy cold day, so spotting the wildlife was tough, but this is a wonderful habitat.
