“Best in town”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

Customer service and hospitality is the hallmark of this place. It's easy for a place to be very good when all things go well but the hallmark of any organization is how they respond when things don't go well. Was assigned a room where the a/c didn't work properly (July in Texas) and asked a cleaning person to look at it. She couldn't get it to work and she called maintainence--they responded immediately. Maintainence couldn't fix the problem right away and they moved us to another room--immediately. No waiting, no fuss. Apologies from everyone involved.
The hotel is multi-story with an interior space similar in style to a Embassy Suites or a Gaylord property (although a much smaller scale). The rooms are comfortable and pleasant with more than adequate drawer space and the staff couldn't be more pleasant, helpful and friendly.
The breakfast provided is expansive. The food is fresh, the area kept very clean; attendants clearing tables immediately. We had several of the attendants come by to ask if all was ok and if there was anything that we needed--definitely not your typical experience at a complimentary breakfast.
As I noted, one can tell cutomer service is their primary objective and they do it very well.

Arrived late afternoon, check in was quick and friendly. When we got to the room it was obvious that someone had been heavily smoking in it prior to our arrival. Went back to the front desk and the staff was quick to assign us another room. Large, comfortable room, clean (except for the first room), and a quiet, restful night. Did not use the pool, but it was indoors and looked nice. Would stay there again

Stayed there for 1 night (with my sister) and could not have been More Pleased. The room was nice, big, (most importantly) Clean. The staff was Way friendly and helpful and the free breakfast is not a bad touch either. The fact that TGI Fridays is adjacent is nice too. And there are a couple additional places within walking distance as well. All in all - a very pleasant stay. Certainly will stay there again if I find myself in the area.

Older property and it shows. Rooms worn and not very clean. Closet doors missing, decor is dated.
Would not stay here again.

The Ambassador is an out dated hotel that is working as hard as it can with what it has. The rooms are tired and outdated. I had a water leak from the ceiling over my shower. The TV was 10 yrs old. The staff makes up for the physical accomodations with smiles and friendlyness you won't find anywhere else. The hotel catered the conference I attended and the food was good.

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms on the first and second floor by the pool

This was my second stay in two weeks - going and coming back from NM. This is a solid 3-star hotel. Our room was delightfully cool and the beds were comfortable. The pool, fitness center and whirlpool were all nice, clean and in good working order. The staff and bell men are all very nice and helpful. I know this hotel is but a shadow of its 5-star days as a Sheraton and Hyatt but I think it's trying hard.
The breakfast was more than adequate. Eggs were running out and hot DIY waffles would add a lot, but the biscuits and gravy were great and the fruit was nice. Hey...it's FREE. Hallway carpets look nice. The atrium is VERY nice. The front desk was very accommodating, giving us a room near the elevator due to my wife's recent surgery. The free coffee and fruit water in the lobby is a nice touch.
The biggest negatives are (1) the hot un-A/C hallways and (2) the overpoweringly sweet smell of the scent used in the hallways. A little attention to some details would improve the look and feel of the hotel overall (a) lots of bathroom and atrium ceiling tiles need replacing. (b) ditch the cheapo "spa" products in the bathroom and provide good soap and shampoo (c) provide big fluffy towels at the pool and not "fitness club" quality towels.

I have stayed at this hotel often, but would not stay again in warm weather months. Either the age of hotel has limited air conditioning efficiency, or hotel is simply 'saving money'. Hallway leaving elevator was hot and muggy. Others on elevator commented 'If you are staying on one of the upper floors, prepare for HEAT!'
Room temp was 80 degrees, set on 67 degrees, not cooling. Called front desk-- 'i will send up a tech'.
Waited 15 minutes, sweating, after long day of travel. Tech arrives, turns unit on then off, says 'Wait 15 minutes'. We wait, sweating.
14 minutes later, no change in temp. Call front desk-- 'How can you fix this? Other rooms? Know that they are cooler?' Answer: 'Could just be your room. You can switch IF YOU LIKE. No rooms available except on top two floors.' My response: 'Find a way to solve this issue on YOUR end, and call me RIGHT BACK. I am not moving to a room with the same issue. If this can't be addressed quickly, we will be checking out.'
Waited 20 minutes, sweating. Call back. 'Please transfer me to a manager.' Response: 'We're really busy here, but I'll have her call back.'
Wait 5 minutes.Call front desk- 'Have another room ready that you KNOW is cooler?' Response:
'Yes, someone should be up to you shortly.'
Wait 5 minutes.
Call front desk: 'Are you sending someone up?' Response: 'Yes, he should be there shortly.'
Wait 5 minutes.
Very nice guy comes to door with keys, brings us thru hot, muggy hallway to another room on same floor, appreciably cooler.

I ask him to have manager call. She does-- she is very professional, nice, concerned, and asked what she can do to rectify-- ends up sending up bottle of cold white wine. (THIS is nice..)

All in all, good managerial response, but poor service prior to that, and really poor response time about pretty basic issue.

As an aside, this is the SECOND time i have been moved from a room for poor air conditioning; i was assured the first was a fluke. Everyone's explanation (front desk/ tech guy) seemed to be something along the lines of .."Well, it's really HOT outside.' Duh, this is TEXAS, you figure summer will be HOT?

The tech actually suggested our room would cool off as the sun went down, outdoors. Yikes.

Room Tip: In summer, if you end up here, request a room on a lower floor, with window to the atrium. Probably...
