“Great Hotel”
Reviewed April 24, 2012

The Holland doesn't seem to get a lot of publicity, perhaps because of the Gage being a better publicist. This is a very nice hotel, though. We would happily stay here any time we could. The lobby is beautiful, old vintage construction, but the rooms are fairly contemporary. Great bath, very comfortable bed. They make a joke about being close to the railroad tracks and put earplugs on your pillow. We never heard a thing, but we were facing the back of the hotel. Maybe the front can have some noise. There's no restaurant or bar, but they are supposedly working on one, and they gave us vouchers for breakfast at a cute little place down the street. Very nice room.

Room Tip: We were on the back side, 2nd floor and had no noise of any kind. We had a room with a whirlpool bat...

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the Holland Hotel. We stayed in Suite 208. It had a lovely decorated living/dining area and a very comfortable bedroom. This room had a balcony that faced the street. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed sitting out on the balcony. The check-in was fast and friendly. We were offered a complimentary beer on arrival. The train noise did not bother us. The Holland House doesn't serve food but they did offer us a free breakfast voucher at a restaurant a block down.
I found my stay at the Holland House very enjoyable. It was clean, comfortable and unique. I would recommend it.

We spent two nights at the Holland Hotel while on a road tour of the Big Bend area, one night at the beginning of our trip and one night at the end. We had the opportunity to stay in two different rooms, each very nice. The hotel is a combination of preserved old charm with modern comforts. The rooms are all different, very comfortable and the bedding was wonderful. The lobby area and patio were so enjoyable. The staff was wonderful, the best we have experienced in all our travels. We look forward to visiting Alpine and the Big Bend area again and especially a return stay at the Holland Hotel.

We spent one night at the Holland on our way to Big Bend. We loved the old world charm of the building and the quality furnishings. Our room was very spacious and we did not need to wear the earplugs provided to muffle noise from passing trains, who are required to blow there horns at each intersection, as basically we did not notice them.

The accommodation is very comfortable and staff extremely attentive and friendly. We were a little sad that guests did not make more of the wonderful lounge area on the ground floor but perhaps everyone was like us, just out and about it this great little town.

We wondered around town and attended the opening of a local restaurant nearby. The Museum of Big Bend is well worth a visit. We were not fortunate enough to stay on a night when the local Blues venue had live music but would check this out to co-ordinate better for any future stay. We had lunch at Buffalo Rose, great food and a unique down to earth venue. We were not so fortunate with our evening meal as we later were to find out that most places are closed on Sunday night and so choices were limited. We made a poor choice in Pennys Diner and the food was unfortunately "workmanlike". We ate breakfast at the Bread and Breakfast Cafe, paid for by the Holland and the food was excellent.

Overall, there is a growing choice of accommodation in Alpine but The Holland is a unique place and well worth the cost to stay there. We will return.

Room Tip: All rooms are individually furnished.

Accidentally having to stay in an unknown place, we discovered old world charm and beauty with modern comforts and special attention. We strangers in a strange place were made to feel most welcome as old friends . The furnishings were most comfortable. We would recommend this hotel and area as a destination point in itself.

During a recent trip to the Big Bend area of Texas, my wife and I stayed one night at The Holland Hotel in Alpine, TX. My wife and I loved it! As of April 1, 2012 there is no restaurant in the hotel but we met the people working on building the one which will adjoin the front of the hotel and share the common outdoor area behind it, and after eating at the "nicest" restaurant in Alpine (Reata), we are looking forward with hope to this one being an improvement and easily taking over that spot on the list of recommendations :-). There are many types of hotels around, and many expectations of what customers find to their liking. In our case we would always prefer to stay at a locally-owned place as opposed to a chain, a place with history or character as opposed to cookie-cutter, and a place with friendly employees that doesn't treat you anonymously. This was all that and more. The lobby and main floor are very well preserved according to the original style, and when you walk in the door there is a sense that someone cared enough about to save and maintain it. The rooms are the same, except they have completely modern standards for the beds, baths, decor, amenities, etc. The bed and linens were extremely comfortable. As we were one of the very few folks staying there that night, they upgraded us from the cheapest King room (which we booked online), to one of their best Suites (the one in front, on the 2nd floor, with a huge outdoor balcony over the main entrance) where we sat outside the night we arrived and the morning of our departure, taking in the clear desert air and the sounds of Alpine, including church bells ringing nearby. The young man behind the counter recommended places for us to eat dinner the night we arrived, and the young woman who was there the next morning did us the favor of taking our photo outside while we stood on the balcony above to preserve the memory. Another kind woman recommended some area scenic drives for us (the Pinto Canyon Rd. from Marfa to Ruidosa), and gave us her opinions (based on her experience) about the wisdom of crossing the border in Presidio to Ojinanga for lunch (we did not). We enjoyed the stay, the place, and the people, and the extremely reasonable price and will definitely stay there again in the future.

Room Tip: Several folks have commented about the train which is across the block from the front of the hotel...

Alpine is a convenient place to stay when visiting Texas Big Bend country and the Hotel Holland is a great find. We like older, small non-chain hotels when we can find them and this one has been very well renovated. We upgraded to a "king suite" room, which means it has extra space and a sofa. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom of adequate size. The only problems with the room were very minor: No glasses, only coffee cups, and no Kleenex dispenser; had we asked those probably would have been corrected. We liked the lounge off the lobby with a computer and comfortable chairs for reading. The staff was friendly and efficient. The lack of a restaurant or bar was not a big problem for us. Coffee was available any time in the lobby. Breakfast came with the room but you have to walk half a block down the street, to "Bread and Breakfast," a quaint local coffee shop, and use a voucher the hotel provided. We parked our car on the street, directrly in front of the hotel, for free. The only other negative thing we can think of: A fine layer of dust here and there in the room, either from construction on a new restaurant and bar, or just because this is windy, dusty West Texas!
