Black Gap is a very rugged place to visit, but is more picturesque and stunning than Big Bend NP. Many places require 4WD. There is a yearly TPWD permit fee required. Every thing you might need must be brought in as there are absolutely no services provided. If you like back country primitive camping, being very alone, you will just love this place. We visited in February for six days and never saw a person other than the one resident park official. It is a hunter's dream, as we saw lots of wildlife.
One attraction of note. Starting at the main entrance gate, with the history sign, there are 10 stops along FM 2627 pointing out different Chihuahuan vegetation. the stops end at the Rio Grand with a spectacular vista. TPWD is updating the signage as some of the plants identified did not survive the drought.
