We stayed 6 nights in mid April. This is a great spot that is within 60 minutes of great birding locations to both the east and west. There is a birding shop that is well stocked with guides that one can look through Our unit was well supplied with a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, private bath, bottled water and a tv. The unit was clean and the area was very safe. Keith is a very helpful but non intrusive manager and I really appreciate that. As for suggestions, Keith sends out directions and instructions via email a few days before your arrival. If you are on a road trip (like we were) and do not have internet access or attend to your email (as I did not), it is best to have a map from Google Maps and Keith's phone number with you before you leave. Second, a guide is a definite asset for at least a day. We waited until we got there before we decided to try and book one and none were available. Keith will line one up for you but book one when you book your room. Finally, we wanted a Mexican meal in Mexico so we went to Arturo's in Villo de Nuevo Progresso which is south of Weslaco and Estro Llano Grande State Park (an excellent birding site). Meal was great and there was no problem crossing the border.

I stayed in one of the renovated apts - plenty of room to put your items, no nic nacs cluttering up tables and counters. Comfortable king size bed! Even had a balcony off the kitchen which turned out great for watching hummingbirds. They have purified water in large dispensers in every room and at dusk Lesser Nighthawks fly low at times around property. It was a lovely time.

Friendly, helpful, extremely knowledgable about birds in area, great value for price. Was recommended by local bird watcher and I'd stay there again! $5 extra per person for breakfast or brown bag lunch w/lots of healthy food choices. Across the street is El Dorado Mexican restaurant which is not to be missed. Best chicken mole enchiladas I ever tasted.

We hired a self catering apartment at the Alamo Inn and, although it is not flashy, it was homely, comfortable, spotlessly clean, spacious and very well equipped. I don't think I have ever slept in a more comfortable bed and the chairs were a joy to sink into after a hard day's birding? The kitchen has everything you could need to cook a meal and even has a kettle for tea drinkers. The lounge area is very comfortably furnished with a homely feel.
Outside there was a table and chairs and the garden is well tended and pretty.
The hosts were very pleasant and Keith, gave us some great tips on where to find particular species. This was a great help, and we would have seen less birds if it hadn't been for his kind assistance. I would definitely stay in this accommodation again and have not hesitation in recommending it to anyone else. Superb service and value for money.

Room Tip: All rooms would be good. We had the one on the ground floor at the far end of the garden from the r...

My husband and I stayed at the Alamo Inn for five nights in early April. Before our arrival Keith kindly organized for a local birding guide to accompany us for two days during our stay and emailed us driving directions which were most helpful.

On arrival, even though it was only mid-morning Keith let us have access to our suite and gave us some birding and other local information. He was very personable and helpful.

The Inn offers freshly brewed coffee every morning from 6am and a help-yourself breakfast which although we only used once had a nice selection and was good, with fresh eggs from Keith's hens. There are also facilities to make a packed lunch with lots of ingredients available. The birding bookstore/store was excellent and included an extensive selection of leaflets and information.

Our suite, the El Patron, in the historic part of the Inn, was clean and reasonably spacious. For a modest nightly rate for a 2 bed 2 bath suite which also contained a large fridge, microwave, water dispenser, kettle and filter coffee machine, it was certainly value for money. However, we found the lack of an opening window an unwelcome surprise (there is a wall of glass bricks onto the street) and we had to open the street front door to get some fresh air. We also felt that the suite needed updating as all the furnishings and decor were basic, mismatched and had seen better days. As we normally stay in rather higher priced accommodation perhaps our expectations were unrealistic or we simply did not choose the rooms at the Inn which might have suited us better.

The location of the Inn in the town of Alamo was quite quiet with only one restaurant across the street which was just OK. If like us you enjoy a meal in a restaurant in the evening, then a location such as McAllen might be preferable.

The birding guide arranged by Keith, Pat, was absolutely delightful. We thoroughly enjoyed our two days with her. She took us to many interesting birding places and cheerfully worked two very long days with us and was excellent company throughout. Thank you Pat.

In summary, the Alamo Inn is a very friendly place, especially for birders and the well-equipped facilities represent good value for money. However if you are used to a little luxury you may be disappointed.

Room Tip: I understand some rooms/suites have been refurbished, ask Keith for details and book accordingly.

Didn't know what to expect and found the accommodations excellent for a birding group! The Inn is located in a quiet part of old town Alamo, but relatively close to many of the Lower Rio Grande Valley's birding Hot Spots. In addition to each person in our party having their own private suite, we were able to meet daily for breakfast and Happy Hour in a very comfortable dining/meeting area. We were greeted with hot coffee every morning (including fixings for breakfast and take-out lunch for the field) and cold beer or wine at the end of each birding day adventure. The innkeeper, Keith, was wonderful in addressing any needs/issues and went out of his way to make us feel at home. The setting and atmosphere were reminiscent of times past when strangers were trusted and made to feel welcome.
