“Out and About”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

The museum is a real gem buried deep within a city that once was the largest railroad center in the world. Here you will learn about the men and women who helped to build and maintain the Pennsylvania Railroad. A community that grew up and declined around the railroad. Born and raised in Altoona, I often travel back to visit with relatives and during these visits I always take time to visit the museum. For me it is nostalgic therapy, for those of you who are railroad buffs or simply want to experience a piece of history, it can be an adventure. Many hands on displays, a variety of rail cars out front. A great place for young and old.

“Well worth it!”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

If you have ANY interest in railroading or Altoona history, this is the place to see, along with Horseshoe Curve. You can easily spend several hours here. If you plan to do it in a couple of hours, you will want to return another day!

“Fun & Educational Museum”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

Our time was limited the day we visited but would love to return. There is so much to see, read, and absorb about history, it would be worth spending a whole day there. Railroad engine sound effects made the displays seem real. Recorded messages by railroad workers were very interesting to listen to. This place is a must see when passing through Altoona. I've told family members about it and all want to visit. Horseshoe Curve is interesting but it was a chilly day to spend much time outdoors. On a nice sunny day, this would be ideal to take your time and watch trains pass by and get incredible photos.

“Not for kids”
Reviewed November 23, 2012

I should not have listened to the reviews that claimed this was an interactive museum and great for kids. I have 3 boys (4, 6, and 11) and I was sorely disappointed. First, you have to get he combo pass even though Horseshoe Curve was closed for the season, so it cost $50 for us to get in. The only part that was really worthwhile was the train hard which would have been free- you do not need to pay admission to play outside. The "interactive" part? Just a bunch of buttons to push that may or may not work, and the ones that did were mostly for long drawn-out explanations that were definitely geared toward grown-ups. If it had been free, I still would have been annoyed at the drive out here, but having wasted $50 for barely an hour's worth of entertainment (including a somewhat interesting 20 min long film), I am very frustrate. Not worth the drive, the time, and DEFINITELY not the money.

The museum is very informative and well layed out. They have a playroom for kids to play with trains.
