“Good Beer, Great Burgers!”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

The boy and I took the Saturday tour of the brewery hosted by Ed Stoudt. He is a character. We enjoyed him thoroughly, but I could see how some people might find him a bit much to handle. Those are the people that are no fun.

Ed really loves what he does - and you can tell he is passionate about his work. The man is 72 years old and still gives (FREE!) tours of the brewery he owns. I'm sure he could hire someone to do the tours for him - but he loves what he does, and what he's built!

After the tour, we had some beers (of course!) and burgers at the Black Angus Pub. There we found Ed - with an apron on, shucking oysters at the raw bar - the man loves his work!

The burgers we had were absolutely delicious. Spot on. We joked that the cows were probably from right in the back yard.

Regular sized beers (even the Imperial Oatmeal Stout) are all under $5. Anyone from the City, who drinks good beer, knows that is a good price! We also split a flight, which was only like $7.50, and came with a good amount of brew.

We mixed a 6 for $9 (again, !!) and bought a couple of pint glasses. Everyone who worked there was great, we had excellent service. Some of the patrons are the worst (who drinks a martini at a brewery and sends back fish & chips because it's made with cod!?) but, I suppose those types live in all the McMansions popping up throughout Lancaster County these days...

“BEST beer”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

There are brewpubs and microbreweries, and then there's Stoudts; the grandfather of local beer, German-style. If you like any kind of beer, go to Stoudts. Have a beer or a meal or a snack (Bratwurst!) and enjoy. PLEASE, Stoudts, bring back the beer garden in the antique section. It was so wonderful to have beer and bread and brats and pretzels truly German style.

“good food pricy”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

The food tasted good but expect to spend at least $20 for your dinner. Beers are expensive $4 some $5. There was a guy playing a guitar, it was too loud and the sound bounced off the tin ceiling. A good place to go for one or 2 beers. Or if you have a lot of $$

“We need more authentic places like this”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

Places that do not run away from their history - but instead embrace it. You already know the place has a certain old character when you drive up. Inside is simply charming. Staff is attentive, food is delicious and great value. And - they have their own beer too. You tell me how it can get better than this. We had burger and pork bbq sandwiches and a couple beers. All very good - including the fries. The burger needed no dress-up - I had it straight (no cheese, bacon, etc.) Worth driving out of your way for.

“Unusual restaurant with a focus on quality food.”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

We went to Stoudt's expecting a steak restaurant and found quite a bit more. It is an older restaurant, quite casual and you enter through the bar area. The decor largely focuses on beer memorabilia from the region and was a lot of fun to look at while we ordered and waited for our meal. The menu had steak offerings, German specialties, seafood and burgers. We ordered a variety of entrees - Filet Mignon, Beef Wellington, Sausages, Mussels .... Overall we were generally pleased with the food, with two exceptions. My Filet Mignon was ordered as Rare-Medium Rare and was served way more done than that, which I sent back. The second steak was cooked perfectly and it was wonderful. The waitress was very accommodating about the re-do though I had to give her my entire plate rather than just the steak which resulted in my sitting for several minutes while everyone else was served and eating. My daughter ordered the Beef Wellington which was beautiful in its presentation but instead of foie gras on the beef it was simply a piece of liver set on top which was an immediate turnoff for her and frankly a misrepresentation. The mussels were plentiful and cooked perfectly, not overcooked like so many restaurants. The sausage plates were probably the hit of the table, pan seared, hot and crispy in spots. Our server was knowledgeable about the entire menu, could make recommendations, and was attentive but not intrusive. Servings were nice sized but not monstrous, clearly the quality of the food was the focus. Even given the quality of the food, the menu prices seemed quite high given the area. Our "lunch" after church for 5 people ran $150 and that was without beverages (ice water all around). We will go back again, but with the expectation that this is a nice meal out.
