“Hidden costs”
Reviewed June 5, 2007

Ashland, Oregon is a lovely town which we visit frequently. This was our first stay at the Peerless Hotel as it is a little far from downtown, the Shakespeare Festival and wonderful shops. The hotel is nice and the room was fine, though the bed could have been firmer.

The bill for the dinner in the hotel restaurant the night before (which we enjoyed - good food, good service and lovely garden setting) was not at the front desk when we were ready to leave the next day and the manager told us that it would be automatically charged to our credit card. I explained to the manager that we had left a cash tip for the waiter and that we had asked that the meal charges only be charged to the room. The manager told me that they never charge an automatic gratuity to the meals at the restaurant and assured me that the only charge would be for the meal itself. The credit card bill, arriving a month later, speaks a different story with the addition of 15% added to the food costs...the waiter got a very large tip indeed.

Hidden costs in a hotel/restaurant that prides itself on caring for its guests are not acceptable, especially when we had been assured that there would be no hidden costs. There are too many nice places to stay and dine in Ashland that are better managed. We won't be staying at the Peerless Hotel again.

Our deepest apologies to our guests who had this experience. We do not apply an automatic gratuity to any of our restaurant bills. It is possible that a charge for some other item in the hotel was included in the credit card charge. We are sorry that this guest has not called us since we are happy to correct any mistakes made if it is brought to our attention. We hope to have the opportunity to correct this error.

The Peerless Hotel, Ashland Oregon

May 31, 2007

My husband and I just returned from a delightful stay at the Peerless Hotel in Ashland Oregon. This hotel is intimate, peaceful, and very, very special. Located in the historic railroad district of Ashland the hotel is close to everything, but away from the busy and noisy main street. The Shakespeare Festival and downtown Ashland are both a leisurely 5-10 minute walk away through charming neighborhoods.

Like a bed and breakfast the Peerless serves a delicious complementary breakfast in their restaurant across the garden. One morning we were treated to crab cakes Benedict and another day we had pesto scrambled eggs with goat cheese and maple chicken sausage. Each meal is accompanied by artfully arranged fresh fruit, juice, and coffee. The restaurant serves dinner and is well worth a visit. There is an emphasis on locally produced foods and our waiters John and Amy took superb care of us.

The rooms (only 6) remind us of a small European inn with fine linens, well-appointed bathrooms, and Trompe L’oiel paintings on the walls. Several of the rooms are suites with separate sitting areas. Catherine, the Innkeeper and Sue, the Housekeeper take excellent care of their guests with extra touches such as Port in the lobby in the evening, coffee and tea available in the airy garden room, and Dagoba locally produced, organic chocolates and a short quotation (by Shakespeare, or others) on your pillow each day.

Because we are members of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, we visit Ashland at least once a year. We have stayed at other hotels and bed & breakfasts, but having found the Peerless Hotel with its first class service and atmosphere, I think we have found our home away from home in Ashland!

  • Liked — The privacy, intimacy, and friendliness of the hotel

This is a lovely boutique hotel full of character. Our room was large and very comfortable, with a small sitting area with sofa and two chairs, a queen bed in a sleeping alcove, and a huge bathroom. Lovely period furnishings, a nice trompe de l'oeil mural, lush towels, comfortable bathrobes, etc. The expansive garden is very pleasant, an the hotel's large heated sunroom is a lovely spot for a cup of tea, coffee, or port when the weather's cold. Breakfast in the restaurant across the garden was tasty, and the coffee was excellent. It is a very short and pleasant walk to town, the Shakespeare festival, and Lithia Park.

The Peerless is a great antidote to the many B&Bs in Ashland (which inevitably make me feel like an uncomfortable guest in the home of someone whom I barely know and don't relate to), without retreating to the more sterile environment of larger hotels. The hotel manager was charming, helpful, and -- blessedly -- professional. The only downside to our stay was that the hot water wasn't quite hot enough for my taste in morning showers, although it was certainly adequate.

I would certainly stay here again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a hotel of very good quality and a nice touch of character.

Nice small hotel with beautiful grounds, quiet and serene. The facility was very clean and the service excellent. It is readily apparent that a lot of love and hard work went into this property. The hotel is in an interesting neighborhood just 15 minute walk from the Shakespeare Center in the middle of town. Attached to the hotel with a walled courtyard between was the Peerless restaurant. We had our dinner served out in the courtyard under the stars. The food was excellent and the service great.
Ok, so why the lower rating. The bed was not good, hot water not hot. The queen bed had a magnificent headboard and like the windows was lavishly draped with colorful fabric. Unfortunately, the bed sagged in the middle and we awoke with sore backs. The room had a spa tub but even using straight hot water, the water was only luke warm even as it exited the tap. We checked the hot water temperature twice during our stay hoping for a hot bath but it remained unchanged.

We have addressed both the hot water issue (it is now hot in all the rooms!) as well as the bed in the particular room mentioned. We appreciate our guests and their comments in our continuing effort to improve the quality of our every service. Thank You for the feedback!

Chose the Peerless Hotel from our Select Registry Guidebook. We've never gone wrong with it. We were delighted with the Peerless as expected. Warm and personal welcome, we were given an immediate tour of the hotel before being taken to our wonderfully romantic and relaxing room on the second floor. Amazingly comfortable bed, great bathroom, good lighting - even WiFi to help us plan our continuing travels. Breakfast in the adjacent restaurant was flawless beginning with excellent coffee! Katherine was an excellent hostess and helped plan our evening including spot on directions to the Dragonfly restaurant. We will definitely be back.

Housekeeping seems amiss at the Peerless, we were missing various items. When we called for help, it took forever for housekeeping to come to our assistance. Floors were dusty under our bed and there was a film of dust on our headboard.

Enough said.

We stayed at the Peerless hotel for the first time this year and it exceeded our expectations. The hotel is whimsically decorated with murals on the walls of the rooms and a neat collection of antiques put together in a cool way. Room #6 is very cute, with a magnolia tree mural on the walls and ceiling, but a bit small. Room #1 is nice. The suites upstairs were really nice, where I would stay next time. There is a great windowed sitting room/library downstairs where we had an indoor picnic when it rained. Many nice touches such as comlimentary port in the lobby, turndown service with a truffle on your pillow and Aveda bath products. Breakfast is included and is a 3 course affair in the restaurant next door inlcuding fresh OJ, coffee, a fruit and muffin/bread course, a pancake type course, then eggs. We loved the first two days breakfast, but the second two days weren't very good, that being the only not perfect part of our stay.
