You certainly can't beat the setting for this lodge, on the shoulder of Mt. Ashland, at about 4000 ft. A great place for a group of friends to enjoy a good meal. Calamari appetizer was great. I chose BBQ ribs for dinner, which wasn't a good choice. Others at our table made better choices. The person who ordered salmon said it was the best she had ever eaten.

We went there with great expectations. We stay at a lot of lodge type resorts. We called and booked a room (With fireplace and Jacuzzi). When we got there, they informed us there were no rooms with fireplace as requested. We gracefully to have in room Jacuzzi. We sat at the bar for a few minutes, and then was rushed to leave because they sat a large dinner party up next to the bar. We made dinner reservations, and was asked to make it 30 minutes later, because they were very busy at 6. arriving for dinner at 6, knowing we would have to wait. The dining room was not even close to being full. Why we were told 6:30? Who knows? We then ordered dinner. The meal came (very slow). Fillet was not tasty. Very bland. I asked for two scallops instead of shrimp, and they were ice cold (Thawing?) and unseasoned. My husband’s meal was ok but nothing to brag about. We ate about half, paid, tipped and left. When we went back to our room we were SHOCKED! We were right under the stage. It was so noisy we could not sleep. You could hear music, people talking and we must have been in the waitress’s pathway to the kitchen. We heard walking that sound like someone had on lead shoes going back and forth. To make it worse, after the dining room closed, all we could hear was (apparently) the staff laughing and talking. My husband talked to the manager and they said whoever booked our room should have let us know that is a very noisy room???? Not only were we NOT told, but the price was the same as any other room with Jacuzzi!!! The next morning we talked to the manager again, she said she would give us a 50.00 gift certificate (which turned out to be 35.00 we noticed on our way home). I will not return. Our breakfast was ok, but by then I was tired and not a happy patron.

We love Callahan's. We had a beautiful dinner in a cozy setting. The ambiance is perfect with wonderful singer who was considerate of us. The food was great. We had a rib eye and filet. The veggies were amazing and competed with the steaks! The homemade salad dressing was amazing, we also had the smoked salmon appetizer. Our waitress, Lauri, is always pleasant, attentive and the owners came to check on us. We were not celebrating anything but was made to feel that we were special. I think it is a little over pricey. We had 2 bottles of champagne (smaller bottles) which you could get anywhere else for $15, but was charged $44 each. Overall, we love going there.

The ambiance of Callahan's is upscale-rustic and very home-like, with multiple fireplaces, plenty of window seating, low lighting, live music at dinnertime every night of the week, and good service. When we went, a wedding proposal took place, and after talking to some of the other customers (which this environment is conducive to) we found that the locals consider this to be a romantic getaway and a wedding hotspot, with rooms containing hot tubs and fireplaces. Sadly Callahan's is a hidden gem; you can't see if from the highway and there is only a small sign on I-5 to let one know that it exists. Ironically, the intimacy and solitude of the place is one of it's most remarkable features. We went on Tuesday "steak night" and got 20% off; I had the filet mignon--a dish that is hard to mess up but was delicious nonetheless--and my boyfriend remarked that his porterhouse was done perfectly. The veggies, which I usually don't eat, were nicely seasoned. Service from Curtis was very pleasant and cordial, and the live music was very nice. I don't usually give 5 stars unless a place is absolutely outstanding, hence the 4 star rating, but that doesn't mean that Callahan's didn't exceed our expectations. We are very happy and will return. Hopefully you will, too...unfortunately, the place was so quiet, per Curtis because of the lack of snow. ):
