“What if you could own your own cabin in the wilderness?”
Reviewed December 19, 2009

What if you could own your own cabin in the wilderness?
If it were not for the investment cost and upkeep, I know what mine would be like. It would be comfortable, roomy and versatile. There would be a generous amount of space and a variety of different kinds of space: an open deck, a screened -in porch, a good-sized living room / lounging area and a bedroom with plenty of space for more than just a bed; Also, a kitchen with enough room for earnest cooking, stocked with a practical set of utensils and cookware. A nearby restaurant is a great asset, but there are times when you just want to create your own meals, so you would include a dishwasher to preserve your limited vacation time.
For me, the Greensprings cabins are an amazing incarnation of just what I would choose for myself and my family. My wife and I have been fortunate to stay at a couple of them so far, and I can’t say that I see any reason to have a favorite one. They are all unique, but none of them seem to contain any compromises. There’s nothing funky about them. They are still new, just now (2009), but they are attentively finished and they are clearly built to last. They will be a pleasing place to visit throughout the seasons for years to come.
Plus, after every visit, you can just pack up and drive away. Someone else will clean up and do the laundry – and you won’t have spent part of your visit catching up on deferred maintenance.

My wife and I had to make a last minute trip to Ashland last Saturday, and we needed a place we could bring our dog. The descriptions and pictures on Trip Advisor looked great, so I called to see if they had any rooms in the lodge open for that night. The owner answered the phone and was very helpful. We were planning on spending two nights in the lodge because the rooms were cheaper, but he let us know he had a vacant cabin, and he ended up cutting the price a little bit on it, since it was empty and we would be there that night.

We got a very late start on our trip, and I called around 9:30pm to let them know we wouldn't be arriving until midnight. We were given directions to our cabin, and told they would warm it up for us before we arrived.

We had some concerns about weather, because the forecast called for freezing rain and possible snow. As soon as we got off exit 14, it started snowing. The road between I5 and the cabins (66 East) is steep, windy, and can be somewhat scary- especially at midnight during a snowstorm. However, it was exceptionally well sanded, and my front wheel vehicle had no problems navigating it.

When we arrived at our cabin, the lights were on and it was already warmed with a fire in the wood stove. The cabin was absolutely beautiful- it was cozy, inviting, and the layout worked really well. Despite the hour and the exhausting drive from Portland, we stayed up a few more hours, soaking in the spa tub, watching the snow fall, while our dog rolled around in the snow on the back porch.

In the morning we were greeted with a beautiful mountainous view of snow covered trees. We took the dog for a hike through the trees, then made breakfast in the kitchen. It was well stocked with all the pans, plates, utensils, etc, you need for cooking. There were no oils or condiments, so you will need to bring everything on your own.

For lunch we decided to try the restaurant. All the employees there were very friendly and inviting. After a few minutes, the owner Diarmuid introduced himself and inquired if everything was ok. We talked with him until our food came. The food was excellent (far better than expected).

The purpose of our trip was because we had to pick some things up for my wife's bath and body product business (venusdreamsblends.com) in Ashland. We had planned on spending most of our time enjoying the downtown area. However, we ended up spending most of our time at the cabins, totally content being in the forest and relaxing in the beautiful and comfortable cabins.

The cabins are pretty much a half hour from Ashland, so unless you want to eat every meal at the restaurant on site, bring food with you to cook. We found an organic grocery store in Ashland and well as a food coop, which served us well, since our trip was last minute, we had only brought breakfast with us. Also, there is no tv (which we liked). Our cabin had wifi coverage, and our iphones had reception 75% of the time. I imagine reception would be better in the cabins closer to the restaurant, but since this wasn't an issue for us, I never asked.

the afternoon of our checkout, Diarmuid stopped by the cabin to make sure everything had gone well. We were very impressed with his hands on running of the place. We were sad to go, but know we will be back very soon.

Service is personal and caring and genuine. Cabin is beautifully and thoughtfully designed and generously appointed with high quality amenities providing everything a guest could need to feel comfortable and nurtured. Each cabin is sited to provide stunning mountain views through large expanses of glass. We also loved the QUIET and the starlit sky (no light pollution). The casual restaurant serves all three meals, has a menu to please a range of tastes, and serves beer and wine. It is a pleasant walk from the cabins. Greensprings cabins are our favorite getaway, truly a world apart.

We arrive late Sunday afternoon after the Ashland matinee, checked into our nice room, very clean and made of natural materials with a comfy bed, a refrig and microwave. We headed for the Inn's restaurant. Wow! We knew we weren't going to bother with cooking with this delicious homemade food available in a relaxed, friendly environment. To top it off a marvelous string band played on the porch. After a delicious meal and music we walked back to our room, enjoying a sky full of stars.
The next morning, after good coffee and a big breakfast we followed the wooded path through the property, enjoying nature.
We drove over to see the nearby dam that is scheduled to be removed to free the river, and spied a fox jumping over a rock, egrets and deer along the road. Even though we had to leave without getting to check out the Monument wild life area, we began planning another stay at this wonderful inn.

Green Springs has good taste - in all the aspects you would hope for. The cabins were clean and well appointed. The restaurant had great food at very reasonable prices, served by very nice people.

I have been looking for a place like this for many years. One that is not poured out of an architect's cup onto a bulldozed hillside, prettied up with colorful flowers and lawns. Instead, Green Springs Inn is inconspicuously nestled into the surrounding forests with the natural world beckoning you to explore it at every side. The lodge and cabins are made from the forest's materials with the look and feel of something that belongs there. The paths and roads put your feet into contact with the rock and dust of the place. And it is no accident. The owners and staff are building the place with sustainability in mind. They celebrate the coming of the national monument status to the surrounding forests and invite you to witness the new possibilities of living in harmony with nature. And then they have the most wonderful menu you could imagine at the Green Springs Cafe. The day we arrived (just happened to be the third Sunday of the month) we sat down on their front deck in the midst of a concert of local musicians playing wonderful country music. What more I could ask? I don't know. This place is great. I guess you can tell I really liked it. And I am not an owner.
