Attraction details
Owner description: You don't need to head to England to experience the genius of a Shakespearean play. Much closer to home is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival located in Ashland, Oregon. Every year at the end of October you can enjoy on average over ten of Shakespeare's plays performed in both classic and newly imagined style. Separate tickets are needed for each show which is held at one of the event campus's two indoor or one outdoor spaces.

We were in town for our anniversary and OSF is what drew us to Ashland. We saw a variation of Romeo & Juliet, which was even better than expected. We were in the Agnus Bowman Theater and the seating was very comfortable, stadium style. We were in M 45 & 47, technically the "nosebleeds" and at an odd angle, and still had great visibility throughout the production. We had our tickets at the box office, right across the street, and the staff there was very friendly and accommodating.
The price could've been better, hence the 4 star versus 5 rating but overall a great experience that we would do again.

Great venues and great performances. The plays are just part of the Ashland ambience, of course. I enjoyed the Black Swan for years and the similarly intimate New Theater (now the Thomas Theater) is my favorite venue. I like the Shakespeare plays, but the other tried and true playwrights and the newer plays are probably more enjoyable. I would like to see each of the Bard's plays as originally costumed, but that seems passe as each director understandably wants to do something original. I like the parking garage adjacent to the Thomas Theater and have never been unable to park there over the years. The rates are good, especially the $1 for the afternoon plays, and it's only a block to the main drag and shopping. The outdoor theater can get cool in the evenings and I appreciate the blanket concession. Have I seen some plays I didn't enjoy very much? Yes, but they are the exception.

We particularly enjoyed Troilus and Cressida, which was set in the Iraq War, though the script seemed true to the original. The characters were well developed and the modern war context enhanced the story. We also enjoyed The Merry Wives of Windsor Iowa, which was an adaptation of Shakespeare's play, the same comedic sitcom theme with distinctly 21st Century twists. We also recommend the Green Show which is a free outdoor music performance each afternoon.

The range of plays and the quality of the sets, the acting, the staffing - everything is impeccable. We return every year.
