Oregon Shakespeare Festival

Owner description: You don't need to head to England to experience the genius of a Shakespearean play. Much closer to home is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival located in Ashland, Oregon. Every year at the end of October you can enjoy on average over ten of Shakespeare's plays performed in both classic and newly imagined style. Separate tickets are needed for each show which is held at one of the event campus's two indoor or one outdoor spaces.

Even if you don't understand the Shakespeare language, you will enjoy a lot. It just amazing!! If you are going to be at the outside theater, make sure to bring a warm cloths and also blanket might be really nice!

We keep returning year after year, be sure to try more than just the Shakespeare plays. The back stage tours are great fun as well, but book early they sell out fast.

We saw the Very Merry Wives of Windsor while in Ashland for a short weekend trip. The atmosphere of the whole festival is wonderful - everyone seemed to be an annual festival-goer and eager to share their experiences (including the other couples at our B&B).

The actors were quite funny (sometimes a bit over the top, even for comedy), and the interpretation was creative. I would suggest that people read the program notes that are online before booking. I didn't see it, but someone at our B&B who saw the same play noted that people walked out during intermission (the adaptation dealt with homosexuality in a very funny way). The online summary specifically mentioned that the play was only appropriate for those over 14 yrs old, described the plot, and noted that there were some "strong sexual themes" (or something along those lines), so I'm not sure how anyone could have been appalled, but apparently they were.

The plays are also rather long (which you would expect for Shakespeare) and start late, so make sure you have coffee and/or don't drink too much at dinner.

Overall, we had a nice time - with some planning further in advance, we'd love to see some more Shakespeare and modern plays next year.

We saw As you like it on the Elizabethan stage. It is an open air theater. It is the best to see a shakespeare play since in his time all plays were done outside. Just dress warm. Wear shoes and socks so your feet are not cold. Take a blanket if you don't want to rent a pillow and blanket for total of $5 for both. We were lucky the weather was great so did not need anything. The play was great. Would love to see some more if we get a chance.
Only negative not enough bathrooms. Advice you can go outside the theater in the building on the left. We got one ticket for $21 and the other for $57 on the balcony. Both seats had the same view. If we go again we will book in advance for $21.
