Owner description: Our permanent home is now under construction, but you can still watch our carvers and painters at work in our temporary studio, and enjoy browsing our gift shop. We should be in our new home in June, 2017. Founded in 2004, the Historic Carousel and Museum is creating a world class carousel complex in downtown Albany that will draw visitors from around the world and contribute to the economic revitalization of historic downtown Albany.

This is a working museum where the future Carousel will be built. Volunteer carvers and painters are working on the animals and "bones" of the Dentzel mechanism (made in Germany). It will be spectacular when it's all done. Great place to stop in with the kids on a Saturday afternoon! Plus, it's right downtown with a lot of shops and food within walking distance.

We took our entire family there for an outing and everyone, young and old, enjoyed it! How fascinating to watch the carvers and painters at work and to learn the history of the development of the carousel. The children enjoyed riding on three available animals and wanted posters from the gift shop of their favorite carousel animals. Can't wait until the whole carousel is put together and ready to use!

This is a rare slice of Americana. This museum is a grass roots project, and is inspiring to visit. Dozens of volunteers are working on building a first class carousel in the antique region of Albany. They are working at hand carving these fanicful creatures, and the work is magnificent. All of the creatures have a story - usually a family story from a sponsor. There are dragons, frogs, salmon, giraffe, elephant, and, of course, horses.

The carousel is not running yet, but watching the volunteer artists carve and paint is motivational! The area is kid friendly, and right next to a park with a playground and picnic tables.

First time to go, and was impressed with the museum. The variety and colors of the carousel animals was quite fascinating. There was a man carving a horse that we got to watch.

What a surprise this visit was. I was expecting room full of old carousel horses but what we found was a little bit of that and so much more! The volunteers are this museum are HAND CARVING an new carousel with wonderful exotic animals. You can walk through the workshop, see the artist drawings, see the in process animals and even have your child sit on one of the new animals out in the lobby. I would encourage you to stop and chat with an artist. Speaking with Larry who is carving Sampson the Rooster made the experience even better!
