Lake Murray State Park & Lodge
Reviewed July 1, 2011

I have been going to Lake Murray with my family for the past 10 years and beyond, and it has always been the highlight of the year. The trails there are beautiful as well as the scenery surrounding it. It is bike and hiker friendly, RV and tent friendly, swimming and boat friendly. They have a cool marina where you can feed the fish, which is one of the neat things to do. The Tucker Tower is also a cool place to visit on the Lake and serves as a great backdrop to the lake when the sun sets. We never get bored of hiking the same trails, going to the same locations, and seeing the same things. It's always well kept and improving.

We have tent camped, RV camped, and Lodged at Lake Murray & yes, we have worn "shower shoes" in the showers, but would anyone, no matter how clean something looked, stand barefoot in someone else's shower? I wouldn't, I don't want to contract something yucky! We have been going annually for about 30 years and we have no plans to stop going. The lake is beautiful, all ways of staying are fun, there are pools, play areas, and more. It is wonderful fun & we recommend it to everyone!!!!

The lodge needs a sponsor to give a LOT of money to update the windows, (painted shut, won't shut or won't open, won't lock) BUT if you go and stay at the lodge, you have excellent views, a fishing pier, a very good restaurant, and a decent mattress. The rooms are SMALL, the bed was a queen. the door was 3 feet from the foot of the bed. None of this matters if you like campy...but if you're looking for luxury, keep looking, but PLEASE leave your money at the desk. They need it. This park needs our support because it IS a great place. Tucker tower is amazing and has world class views. ALSO may need a sponsor for some upgrades. Rumor has it that it gets dirty in the summer. STOP IT. do a service project and clean up after yourselves. littering is lame.

Stayed early in season (1st weekend in April) so the place was a ghost town. I was concerned after reading about all the people complaining about the place being dirty and over-crowded, but this wasn't our experience. As we were setting up camp, we picked up the trash that was left behind prior to us, mostly plastic bag remnants, aluminum cans in the water, beer can tabs and cigarette butts. We made this a learning experience for our kids that we should leave a place cleaner than we find it. We brought our own tents and camped by the lake. I would recommend driving all the way around the lake to find a camping location that is right for your family; we went to the main park office and were provided a camp site recommendation (Tipp's Point) by the friendly staff. After we visited all of the camp sites on day #2, we realized that there was a location which would have been better for our family. Most of the cabins in the main "lodge" camping area do look a bit shabby on the exterior, but there appeared to be 4-5 cabins which looked like they had recent face-lifts on a road to the left off the main drive as you head into the Resort Lodge area. There is also a private business in the Resort Lodge area with rental cabins that are on the water. They are beautiful, but quite expensive. The lodge itself looks a bit shabby and dated from the outside; we did not bother going in. We observed the boat rental area at the lodge. It appeared closed, but seemed to have plenty of watercraft available. We did have a horseback ride at the horse stables adjacent to the Resort Lodge area. The guide was very friendly and patient with our young children. Everyone came back from the 40-ish minute horseback ride happy. We hiked about 2 miles into one of the trails passing through the Tipp's Point camping area (Buckhorn trail, I think) before turning back to clean up camp. That trail appeared well maintained and had some nice views of the beautiful waters of the lake. This was a peaceful first camping trip for my kids, and now they are itching for another camping weekend! The camp hosts for our camp site were also quite friendly; they came by to say hello one time, but left us to our own activities for the remainder of the weekend.

Room Tip: If camping, arrive early for holiday weekends

Have stayed here many times, once in a cabin, few times in tent, and several times in an RV. Campgrounds always great, cabins older, but nice enough. ATV/motorcycle area is great for kids/family, not real challenging. Nice and isolated. Each campsite is seperate, so there is a limited amount of people at any area which is nice. Ardmore is a nice smaller town with plenty of basic places to eat.

I wanted to leave an updated review about camping at Lake Murray because I couldn't find any reviews about the camping grounds before we went. The grounds were pretty clean. There were certain areas that were nicer than others but overall it was a clean place. The bathrooms were decent, we didn't shower because we dot live too far away and only stayed one night. Lake was clean. Don't take any golf cart/ ATV and expect to ride it anywhere other than the ATV area. Horseback riding was fun. A burn ban is aout to start out there. Overall it was a nice place and we will dfinitely be back.

We stayed at Lake Murray this past weekend, and the cabins were disgusting, had to shower in flip flops, didn't even want my dogs walking around on the nasty and disgusting floor, bathroom was really nasty, door wouldn't stay closed, could not even sit straight on the toilet, customer service well, they had none, there was no parlor to go and have a drink and listen to country music, like the website said and also the info they gave you at the front desk when you checked in. NEED TO UPDATE YOUR INFO. Lake Murray was beautiful, but will never stay at a cabin, need to bulldoze all of them down and start over.
