Owner description: Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, located in Akron, Ohio, is the former home of F.A. Seiberling, the co-founder of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and his family. Completed in 1915, Stan Hywet is the one of the most important remaining examples of an American Country Estate built by the wealth created during the Industrial Age at the turn of the twentieth century, when the emergence of modern America made Akron the "Rubber Capital of the World." The Tudor revival Manor House is 64,500 sq. feet and the 6th largest home open to the public in the U.S. Open from April through December, Stan Hywet includes a 65-room Manor House, a conservatory and more than 70 acres of artfully landscaped ground. It is Akron's oldest National Historic Landmark and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

I recently went back to Ohio and toured Stan Hywet again. Wow! It's even better now than before! This is one of the largest mansions open to the public in the US. Unlike some of the others, however, Stan Hywet is notable for the absolute good taste of its former owners. Rather than creating a huge marble monument designed to pump up the owner's social standing, Stan Hywet was designed to be a warm and cozy home first and foremost, full of intriguing hidden nooks and crannies, nature-inspired havens of peace and serenity, and grand rooms that are inviting, rather than intimidating. The Seiberlings toured England with their architect and came back with plans that combined the best of Tudor architecture with then-current American Arts and Crafts movement touches. The peaceful fountain room, with a backdrop of Pewabic pottery tiles depicting a Renaissance-style scene, as imagined by an Arts and Crafts artist, is a perfect example of this blend. Tourists now have a choice of types of tours of the house, and new rooms have been opened up in the servants' wing, showing the "downstairs" side of life at Stan Hywet. When you take a tour, you will feel that you have traveled a century back in time; it will be hard to return to the 21st century. Kids will enjoy seeing the Seiberling children's rooms and will love the butterfly conservatory on the grounds. They will also love running around the lagoons, the long tree-covered allees, the grape arbor, and the hidden English garden. This is a place to dream in and explore. Add time into your plans to sit and read in one of the hidden corners of the 70 acre grounds.

It's like stepping back in time when you visit this estate. Take the time to go on the tour and see what like was like in a more genteel era. They have taken steps to keep the original decor and feel of the time period.

The gardens are beautiful as well. My husband and I had our wedding pictures taken in the gardens during the fall. It was just gorgeous in the fall but the gardens are beautiful in the spring and summer as well.

Allow yourself 2-3 hours to take everything in, enjoying the house and the grounds.

Awesome, beautiful mansion and well kept gardens. Right here in Akron, OH. The grandness of the mansion and the interiors is worth a visit, maybe even two :) Amazing tudor style architecture. The Best location for wedding pictures in every season, be it spring, summer, fall or winter!

Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is a top area attraction in Akron, Ohio. It is the former home of the Seiberling family who used to own Goodyear Tire & Rubber. Not only are the house and grounds lovely to see but there are many events that are held on the property. One of the main attractions is Ohio Mart which is held the first weekend of October. It is a juried art show with plenty of things to do like carve pumpkins, etc... Make sure you get some of the famous gingerbread cookies that are sold there!

I love the Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens! We have visited numerous times and is defiantly something we take our visitors to. If you have a family with young children go take a tour of the gardens and if you have an older crowd do the tour or the house. Price of tours are a little pricey but you won't be disappointed. Make sure if you are an aaa member to bring your card because you get a discount! You are going to want to set aside a couple hours for either tour.
