Ketch 55 has long been among my favorites on Hatteras, one of a handful of restaurants where a consistently excellent meal can be enjoyed. On discovering that friends from out of town had not experienced their offerings, I took the opportunity to share one of Hatteras' best culinary experiences, while also having my first "test drive" their new executive chef.

We were not disappointed. The raw oysters and steamed clams were to the usual high fresh standards. The pear and goat cheese salad with fried carrot strands was creative, delicious, and beautifully presented. The Parmesan encrusted flounder was sufficiently delectable to convince that the fish on the plate may have been swimming that morning. The service provided by Jay was the pleasant and professional excellence expected.

Ketch 55 maintains its place as one of Hatteras Island's most enjoyable dining experiences.

Stopped in for dinner, Friday, Sept. 6th, their first day open on our vacation. We had been looking forward to at least two dinners at Ketch 55 since we visited twice the previous year. One was sufficient. We were told that there was a new chef, and the minor accommodations we requested couldn't be met. Mediocre meal, lacked the pizazz and ingenuity of our previous dining experiences at 55. We didn't mind paying for a superior meal previously, but this time, it was anything but outstanding. Oh, and it was ICE COLD in the restaurant.

By far the best dinner that we had while on vacation this summer. I bit pricier than the other restaurants, but well worth it. We started out with calamari that was very tender and accompanied with a very tasty dipping sauce. I had never had shrimp and grits before, but it was absolutely delicious. My wife had the filet mignon and was raving about it as well. Can't say enough good things about our dinner, and the waiter was very attentive and polite as well. Definitely check it out.

If you're looking for a nicer, more upscale restaurant in the Hatteras area, this is the place. The atmosphere is still quite relaxed, but the quality of the food and menu is much better than any of the surrounding restaurants. Most food in the area restaurants comes in baskets and is deep fried. The service here is fairly good, though it does get crowded on the weekends and you may have a bit of a wait. Large groups staying in the area take up much of the table space as this restaurant isn't huge. There is outdoor seating if it isn't too hot or buggy. We eat at this place several times during the summer and are always satisfied with our meals.

Our last night at OBX. BIG MISTAKE. Got to our table after a 55 minute wait (we were told 40). We noticed many empty tables, set and ready. Friendly server took our order pronto. Said another 30 for food, so we ordered an appetizer. It arrived within 10 minutes. Those plates cleared and still no food in sight. Can't review the food because we left after a 2-hour wait. Were told it was first night of new menu. Hope it improves or they are done. Been there in the past but won't be back.
