“Good Value - Don't expect it to be the Ritz-Carlton”
Reviewed October 18, 2011

The Oceanna Motel has been there for around 50 years (some parts newer). It's a very good beach motel, but don't expect it to be plush. I've stayed there many time over the last 30 years, and had one issue about 25 years ago. The fishing pier is right next to the motel and you fish free in the off season. I recommended it to the lady I work with about 10 years ago, and they go there once or twice each year.

The Oceanana has been hosting family vacations in Atlantic Beach since 1959. And, as some of the reviews have noted, 50 years of operations can take their toll on a facility. Although, we have constantly performed maintenance and upgrades over the years, in 2012 we have undertaken a major renovation of our resort to ensure that our guests are as comfortable today as our first guests were years ago.

We have upgraded our air conditioning system, added new flat-screen TV's in many rooms, painted and refinished walls in many of the rooms and are currently in the process of complete renovations (new carpet, drapes, bath fixtures, electrical, etc) of several rooms. We will continue these complete renovations throughout the year so that there will be an increasing number of "new" rooms available for our guests as the year progresses.

We've also added new staff to ensure that our rooms' cleanliness is top notch. As this guest noted, we are not a Ritz-Carlton. But, with our significant investment in renovations, new equipment and staff we have addressed many of the problems noted in other reviews below.

We've always had a wide sandy beach, fun pool, fishing pier and the largest playground in the area, but now our rooms are getting back on par with our other amenities.

We've also recently launched a new web site that will be continually updated with new photos as our renovations evolve.

I stayed over the summer with my girls for a girls weekend. Yes, it wasnt clean but it was close to the beach. They have boys that work out by the beach that will carry out an umbrella and beach chair for you so that makes for a plus.
Now for the negatives of our first trip,. With in 5 minutes of our arrival the toliet was over flowing and plugged. Which required us to call for help. The mattresses and pillows are aweful! The pillow are flat, bring a few from home you will need them. You can feel every spring in your back on the mattress., It pops and creaks everytime you move. The last day of our girls weekend i awoke to the air being out. Called downstair and they sent up a new window unit,

Second trip - just this past weekend. 3rd week of september. Air Conditioning has been shut off in the building for the season. Now mind you, in north carolina in september it is not uncommon to have 90+ degree days in September. I went to the office and was told they would send someone down to fix the problem, The fix was a box fan. :(
We had a 1 bedroom "suite" when we returned from dinner my son killed a roach in the bedroom. The next morning when i made the pull out sofa (which looked like new!) there was a dead roach in the cushion.
Over the summer they had a "free breakfast" which consisted of muffins, juice, fruit, cereal. In September they did not offer the free meal.

in conclussion, we wont be returning. I paid $169.00 for a non ocean view room in September. I think the rate is high. I could have stayed in Wrightsville, Topsail , or Carolina Beach for around $100.00 in a much cleaner room, next time i will!

Our family has visited this Motel for the last 40 years. I can honestly say it has not changed much in looks over these 40 years, but we still keep returning.....why.....the answer is very simple....the people!!!!

Even though the rooms are a little run down, the people and the fellowship make up for the old deco. Breakfast around the pool every morning, watermelon parties on the lawn twice a week, Easter Egg Hunt, Mother's and Father's Day parties, and the largest......The 4th of JUly party!

Chairs , umbrellas, rocking chairs, bikes for the kids, large playground, they even have a sand box!....all these things are provided.......grills and everything to cook with are provided.

Over the last 40 years we have made wonderful friends from up and down the East Coast. We always come during the 4th of July week. This summer we had at least 75 people at our "family 4th of July" dinner!

Come join us next summer!

If you are staying here spend as much time as possible at the beach or pool. The rooms are dim, way dates and dingy and stay away from the second floor as the railings are not safe for children or adults. The staff was great as well as the location, so I was happy with our stay.

If you are coming to the beach save yourself some trouble and spend a little extra to stay where the management is concerned about your vacation experience. Very bad experience with managment. Spend a few dollars more to stay somewhere else. You get what you pay for!

For a very relaxing simple vacation with the main point being to enjoy the beach this is the place to stay. Think old fashioned and earlier times then sit back and relax. Oceanana is an older motel that is kept clean and has a very nice staff. It is family oriented.
Don't expect a fancy hotel...a beach trip deserves the focus to be on the beach! Breakfast by the pool every morning. 24/7 coffee. Great play area and games for little kids and a nice little pool. Chairs and umbrellas for the beach and watermelon on the lawn on Wednesday and Saturday afternoon. If you want to grill that's ok too but plenty of restaurants are to be found in the area. It ain't the ritz but it doesn't claim to be. Kids can be kids and it doesn't cost a fortune. Places like this are where family traditions are started and enjoyed for years.

Room Tip: Try a corner room facing the beach. View of the beach and a public balcony with plenty of room.

This is a laid back hotel that is focused on the family! There are so many things for the kids to do! I have been staying here since I was 2 years old and now have 3 boys and we have been coming back since the oldest was 2! It has not changed and I LOVE IT! Now if you are looking for a brand new room at the RITZ then please don't go because you will be disappointed and you will come back and leave a bad review. BUT!!!! If you are a family oriented person wanting a place to come and relax with your family then PLEASE go and enjoy Oceanana Resort! We go every 4th of July and meet the same people I have been meeting since I was little! Hope you ENJOY!!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Our OCEANANA FAMILY!!!!
