Ah buhleeve if I had been stationed here as a soldier during the Summer I'd have deserted. It gets hotter than bears description. That being said, this is where you need to go first thing in the morning or during the off season. First of all its free. Second of all, if its been awhile since you've been it has steadily been enhanced over the years with new exhibits popping up with frequency.
Did the battle of Fort Macon change the course of American history. Um, no. But it was fought fair and square (more or less) and you can even see some artillery damage in the walls, including one unique instance of damage to some steps where a ball skipped down.
Also use common sense with small children. Like the sign CLEARLY says, Fort Macon was designed for war, not for recreation. There are walls without rails off of which a toddler or a yankee could take a header if they aren't careful.

This is a great place to walk around and get some history of our country and the defense that was needed to protect our coast over the years. What those men went through and how they lived during those times is truly remarkable. The grounds are great for walking around. The fort has been well preserved and the information supplied is very interesting. There is beach access as well. There is no charge for visiting this area, but they do accept donations. There is only vending machines on site, but food is not too far away. There is plenty of parking and beautiful views.

The history of Fort Macon is incredible. While we were there, a sailor was commissioned as a Commander! That was fantastic.

Second visit to the Fort. The visitors center is awesome and gives you a walk through history from the Civil War to World War II. Fort has been restored and you get a feel of daily life of the soldiers and prisoners who called it home during the war. A little dangerous for small kids as they don not have railings around the perimeter. Great view of the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" from the top of the fort. A must see in the area.
