Ah buhleeve if I had been stationed here as a soldier during the Summer I'd have deserted. It gets hotter than bears description. That being said, this is where you need to go first thing in the morning or during the off season. First of all its free. Second of all, if its been awhile since you've been it has steadily been enhanced over the years with new exhibits popping up with frequency.
Did the battle of Fort Macon change the course of American history. Um, no. But it was fought fair and square (more or less) and you can even see some artillery damage in the walls, including one unique instance of damage to some steps where a ball skipped down.
Also use common sense with small children. Like the sign CLEARLY says, Fort Macon was designed for war, not for recreation. There are walls without rails off of which a toddler or a yankee could take a header if they aren't careful.
