“A Nice Historical Site”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2014

Really nice set up, plenty of parking, plenty of displays to see, a great view of the ocean, and lots of fresh air. If you are not a walker, this is not the place to visit. The displays give u a real look at how primitive both the military and medical fields use to be and the displays also provide a history of the area over several wars. If you aren't up to walking the actual fort, the vistor's center provides a great many displays that also give u the history along with some films to view.

“Great fort and exhibits”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2014

There are many excellent reviews of this attraction. The fort is "all there" which makes it very easy to view. The visitor centre has a very good film and you can self tour with the brochure that is available. The brochure explains the fort's history and there is a map of the exhibits that are held inside the fort. You can easily spend between 1-2 hours here. They have a nice gift shop as well.

“we love this historic fort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2014

the new visitor center is great. They have a junior ranger program which is great for the kids. They have been working to restore more rooms to open to the public which is great. We enjoy walking around when we are in the area. Just be careful with small kids - it is a fort, with no railings, old stairs, etc (I finally can relax a bit with my kids here now that they are 9, 7,7)

“Very nice visit”

Very nice visit to the fort. This is a well maintained fort, with explanation and examples of life lived at the fort. A really great stop and it is free. Well worth the stop for a family.

“Fantastic for a State Park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2014

Definitely worth visiting. One may think I might be biased when I say I was staying at a vacation house that we own in the area and that my family and I were at it when we decided to go explore Fort Macon. But, after 7 years we ventured over to Fort Macon and were surprised at how good it was. It just didn't seem possible that a place this interesting was just around the corner from our house. We knew there was a guided tour at 11:00 and a musket firing demonstration at noon. After getting there at about 10:40, we thought that we would be done checking the place out before the guided tour and certainly were not going to hang out until noon for the musket demonstration. However, next thing we knew it was around 11:30 and people were starting to gather for the musket demonstration. We ended watching the demonstration which was very informative. The soldier fired the musket twice which was quite loud and reverberated off the fort walls. Normally I think he may only fire it once but we asked if he would do it again and he obliged. One could only imagine what it must have been like during the Civil War (War Between the States, as referred to at the Fort and apparently commonly used in the South). It was an awakening experience to walk the area realizing that dead soldiers had lied on the ground you were walking on. Many artifacts of the time were on display and the history explained by the exhibits was fascinating. One can see, evidenced by newer brick, where the Union army had destroyed places on the Fort. Although the Fort was strategic during the Civil War, it was not built for that purpose but to guard against threats from other countries. Please note, I don't know if the musket demonstration takes place every day and recommend calling ahead or checking out the website for the park. Oh, and it is all FREE; they do have places for making donations, which based on the contents, would indicate that many others were also impressed with the park. They also have a beach area and picnic area but we did not visit those.
