My family (husband the three girls- 7, 5 & 2) spent two weeks recently on Emerald Isle. We did a lot of activities during that time, but the 7 yr old has declared Ft. Macon to be her highlight of the trip. Unfortunately, when we were there, the guide was out for the day with a broken foot, so we were on our own to explore the fort. The girls really liked going in and out of all the passageways and exploring where everything went. The fake wax people terrified my 5 yr old and she refused to go into some of the displays until we told her if they were in there.
The fort itself is a little scary, particularly if you go up top. There are not guardrails and some very steep drops, so hang on tight to the little ones. The steps are also very steep and those who aren’t very sure footed could easily slip. The visitor center was great- lots of info on the area and different rooms set up for the kids to explore and learn about the different periods. There’s walking trails to the beach and it’s a great place to picnic (but not to swim b/c of the strong currents). We easily spent half a day here and didn’t see everything there was to see. If you’re into history and will take time to read the displays and listen to the material, plan to spend a day here. For those who prefer more of a drive-by approach, 1-2 hours is all it will take to see all the Fort has to offer.
