Owner description: A Civil War fortress located at the entrance of Beaufort Inlet.

My family (husband the three girls- 7, 5 & 2) spent two weeks recently on Emerald Isle. We did a lot of activities during that time, but the 7 yr old has declared Ft. Macon to be her highlight of the trip. Unfortunately, when we were there, the guide was out for the day with a broken foot, so we were on our own to explore the fort. The girls really liked going in and out of all the passageways and exploring where everything went. The fake wax people terrified my 5 yr old and she refused to go into some of the displays until we told her if they were in there.

The fort itself is a little scary, particularly if you go up top. There are not guardrails and some very steep drops, so hang on tight to the little ones. The steps are also very steep and those who aren’t very sure footed could easily slip. The visitor center was great- lots of info on the area and different rooms set up for the kids to explore and learn about the different periods. There’s walking trails to the beach and it’s a great place to picnic (but not to swim b/c of the strong currents). We easily spent half a day here and didn’t see everything there was to see. If you’re into history and will take time to read the displays and listen to the material, plan to spend a day here. For those who prefer more of a drive-by approach, 1-2 hours is all it will take to see all the Fort has to offer.

I didn't actually tour the fort itself, but I walked my dog along the nature trail and beach and it was gorgeous. Quiet beach, lots of great shell-gathering. Perfect for an afternoon walk.

The visitors' center had a lot more to it than I'd expected, including a movie that tells a good history. The fort itself is quite an interesting exploration. I saw some kids who were having a ball checking out the different rooms that are set up to reflect different eras and purposes. Stroll out to enjoy the beach afterward, but there's no swimming allowed.

This is a very well preserved fort with a nice visitor center. No admission fee. A nice and friendly docent greeted us as we entered. Very helpful. They have a nice gift shop and clean restroom. Exit the visitor center and take the path to the fort. Check out the detail on the front doors and the railings on the stairs. Half of the rooms have displays and the other half are left open. This fort was used over a long period of time, up to WWII. Take the stairs and go up top for a view. Families with small children should use caution!!!--No railings up top). After viewing the fort take the path to the beach on the other side of the parking area. Be sure to take some pictures.
