“Bring your walking shoes! Family fun.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013

If I lived closer, I would come here more often. The trails are clean, the animals have plenty of space and seem happy and healthy. Staff was courteous. Food inside the park is overpriced, as expected. Check out the park map online so you can plan ahead for your favorites! Kids ages 9, 11, and 17 all enjoyed this trip as well as the parents. Exhibits have plenty of educational information, and we found a teaching cart at the Rhino overlook that had pieces of horns and a staff member to explain and answer questions. It is hard to narrow down a favorite, but the aviary, the desert and the polar bear are all at the top of the list. The dinosaur exhibit was interesting, and worth the extra pass to see, However, I wouldn't pay extra again to see the 4d ice age movie (only 7 minutes) or for the carousel. Our admission to the park was free, since we are NC Aquarium members. The whole zoo has lots of hills. The middle part (especially between the prairie and the desert is very hilly, and exhibits are spaced few and far between. The polar bear exhibit is under construction, and we were excited to read that the expansion will allow to have more bears and a breeding program.

“it was fun for a while”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2013

It was fun for the first bit, but after a while it got boring. My husband loved it. I guess it just depends on you. A lot of walking every where. Plan on walking any where from 5-8 miles. Food is what you expect. Really cool stuff to buy.

“Few Things to Note”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2013

If you purchase the NC aquarium membership then you can get in free to the zoo. It is significantly less and the aquarium is quite nice as well at emerald isle.

It's a lot of walking but a great zoo. Bring water and note that the giraffes aren't always hungry...
The carousel was not good. The woman was loud and very pushy. Also insisted that I pay to ride with my daughter-- even though she couldn't ride alone as she is only 3.

Otherwise a great adventure.

“Awesome Zoo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2013

It is a fantastic zoo. The exhibits are large and you don't feel like you are looking at animals in cages. The animals were active and looked very healthy and happy. The walkways were large enough to accommodate large numbers of guests. Our only complaint was that there was not food and beverage stands along the way. Otherwise a wonderful zoo and I will most definitely make it a point to visit it again.

“Well laid out, great animal habitats, but be prepared to walk”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

Our visit would have been more peaceful had we not chosen to go on a stroller-filled, screaming-kid Saturday, but you can't beat the price ($11 per adult with a AAA discount) and you will enjoy the animals no matter what. The zoo has about 1000 acres, of which half are still undeveloped. The remaining 500 acres are split evenly between North America and Africa sections. The exhibits are distributed linearly, not in a loop or network, so it is easy to go from one to the other without getting lost or missing anything. This means, however, that once you have gone from one end to the other, you have over 1-1/2 miles to backtrack to get back to your parking lot. Luckily, the zoo provides trams that can ferry you to whichever end you started at. And at busy times, such as the end of the day, they run extra trams, so you not have to wait terribly long. There is food and drink for sale, though maybe not where you decide you need it, and the lines are very long around lunchtime. Water costs $3 per bottle, so you might want to bring your own. I recommend eating at the Crocodile Cafe in the Akiba market near the Africa parking lot. We had the place virtually to ourselves after 4 pm, and the food is fresh and delicious: we had a yogurt/fruit parfait, a catfish sandwich, and a pulled pork sandwich, both of which were generous and tasty with a good serving of hot fries. Your legs will be tired the next day, but this is a great place for all ages. The popular polar bear exhibit is undergoing expansion and will soon be one of the premier polar bear habitats in the U.S. Check out the elephants, the bison and elk herds, the creatures in the Sonoran desert, the Tropical Aviary, and the alligator feeding.
