Let's face it, when you're the only restaurant for miles around, you don't have to work to hard for your business. We want Gary's to be good because it's local and cute. But while I've had a nice fish stew at Gary's, I've had other dishes that stunned me for their lack of taste, poor presentation and the accompanying high price tag. The atmosphere in the restaurant is pleasantly funky, but I really don't comprehend the lack of thought behind the uncomfortable high stools and awful florescent lighting in the "raw bar". Service is almost always cheerful and good. Mashed potatoes are from instant, gravy is from a bag, and fish and chips are greasy. That said, now and again a fresh catch is simply and well prepared. In short, it's uneven and a mixed experience. We go now and again, and I always hope it will be better.
There are other options in Pamlico County, by the way, which is a place where great seafood and local vegetables can be found in abundance. Gary's is not our go-to spot.
