Finally a safe place to bike from Durham to Apex! Even on a perfect week-end it is not too crowded. Easy to get to from Cary.

Take the often not traveled roads to get to the older trail heads...I have gone all the way to Durham/Ballpark from the Cary green level to durham road lots. Winding trails, tunnel, flats, gravel, hills, wildlife and other very friendly joggers. Do the tobbacco trail marathon [it sells out months in advance] a very enjoyable run/horseride/jog/walk.
Not very stoller friendly as its all dirt trails. Dogs must be on a leash, and during deer season hunting is allowed...be careful. Some trail heads are having trouble with violent crime, carry mace or a big dog- travel in pairs and you should be ok. That area should be avoided anyways- terrible views and crime area So just stop before you get there, and stay on the Cary/apex/lake sides. I use the trail weekly all year. opens around 8 or 9 in the morning [or park outside gates] and closes at sunset. You do not want to be out there at dark- scary!

Great place to run as it's on finely packed gravel/dirt. I haven't done anything else here. It's a long trail.

We have enjoyed biking the along the American Toboacco Trail many times. It is well-maintained and follows an old train bed so it does not have many hills. Some parts are paved and some parts are cinder tracked, but are not difficult. There are places to get on or off the trail along the route and ample parking. It makes for a great time for family and friends!

Love this trail for cyclig because trail is easy to follow and you can go as long as you'd like. Etiquette is good here too. Clean facilities, pretty easy to park most of the time.
