“A Mixed Picture”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

As a frequent traveller I usually find it easy to rate hotels but the Xanadu Island Hotel is not so straightforward. The location on its own peninsular makes it a little remote but the views are stunning. You can walk the island in 10 minutes and the views to the islands are memorable, particularly at sunset, The hotel does offer a bus shuttle service to Turgutries and Bodrum but the timings are a little weird! I do echo the comments about the lack of information. No welcome pack, nothing in the rooms and a map of the island which does not even show the location of a la carte restaurants. The hotel has been beautifully designed and the rooms are large and kept very clean. Our bathroom was enormous and the shower one of the best ever. Beds are firm which I personally like but its a matter of taste. Air conditioning was very efficient and quiet. The beach is man made shingle but the water for swimming was beautifully clear - its not The Maldives but much better than many locations in Europe. This is of course an all inclusive hotel and my experience has always been that if you are looking for a gastronomic experience they are best avoided. We found the food here to be of mixed quality which is what we expected as the hotel caters for a number of nationalities. Breakfast was perfectly fine with plenty of choice although those looking for a full English breakfast will be disappointed. Lunch was very good. The salad range was extensive and we found the choice of hot food better than in the evening. Dinner was never the highlight of the day - unless you have an addiction to veal and eggplant. The BBQ meat was pretty tasteless and frequently lukewarm. Vegetables were at a premium (except for eggplant) and potatoes were usually swimming in oil. Not the best food at an all inclusive but certainly not the worse. The restaurant atmosphere itself is more like a canteen than a 5 star hotel but this is par for the course with all inclusive. I have to say the drinks provided under all inclusive were of high quality and mainly branded. Like the food, the service at the Xanadu was of mixed quality. On arrival we were booked in and asked to take a seat - and then nothing further happened. The porter eventually realised their was a problem just in time to stop our luggage heading back to Milas Airport. My partner phoned housekeeping about some missing towels but nothing happened until we grabbed one of the maids who was then only too pleased to help. In the Italian Restaurant my main course was not ordered with the kitchen which rather spoiled the experience although I thought the waiter was about to have a nervous breakdown and couldn't apologise enough when the error came to light. Service in the main restaurant was patchy with most attention being on clearing tables as quickly as possible rather than looking after guests arriving. So all in all it was a bit of a mixed bag. The Xanadu has plenty going for it but would benefit from stronger management around service, information and evening food quality. The business model is interesting as it "caters" for children but to a very limited extent. I do wonder if an adults only model with upgraded food and service at the design stage would have served the hotel better bearing in mind the tranquillity of the location. Overall, for the price we paid the hotel is good value for money although food and service are not 5 star quality. We would return as the pros outweigh the cons especially when compared to many other all inclusive hotels.

Room Tip: We stayed in a sunset suite with fabulous views of the islands and sunset. However, these views can...

This was our second visit to Xanadu, following our first visit in June 2010 just after the hotel opened. I wont re-review the hotel, just the differences from this visit. This time, we upgraded our room to a Romance Suite which was definitely worth the extra cost.

Our suite (3023) was exceptional. A huge room with large bedroom area, a large lounge area with walk in wardrobe and a gigantic bathroom with jacuzzi bath with sea view, separate toilet and shower and double sinks. The room has been maintained to a very high standard since opening and was kept spotlessly clean. No turn-down service which is unusual for a 5* hotel.

As we arrived at the hotel it was quite evident (from 2 large banners hung above the entrance) that there was some sort of conference taking place. This lasted for the full duration of our holiday with 200 delegates. As a result, the hotel was noticeably busier than it would have been otherwise and didn't have the same 'luxury' or 'high class' (as Xanadu call it) feeling that we experienced on our previous visit. Added to this, the weather during our stay wasn't too great.

Due to the poor weather (strong cold winds) the hotel didn't seem to be able to cope. They rely greatly on outdoor eating and drinking areas. As a result (and because of all the extra conference guests) meal-times were bordering on horrendous. No tables available in the restaurant, overcrowded bars, with slow, and sometimes non-existant service. It meant that meal-times were unpleasant to say the least. It was very rare that glasses were refilled and plates cleared away. The poor service wasn't due to poor staff. The majority of the staff are actually very good and willing to help - there just aren't enough of them. The waiters couldn't cope with the amount of tables they were expected to service. Again, due to the cold temperatures in the evening, food from the outdoor BBQ (which was still taking place) was cold by the time you got back to your table. There was clearly no contingency plans in place for poor weather.

By day 4 of our holiday, we'd had enough with the poor service in the restaurant and bars and decided to speak to a manager. He explained that the hotel cannot recruit enough staff as locals tend to prefer the 'bright lights' of Istanbul for a career in Hospitality. The following day, we saw an improvement. The outside seating area was virtually closed and extra tables brought in from outside. It did make the restaurant even more crowded and noisy, but it did solve the problem. We also complained to the manager about the poor service in the hotels main bar (Rosebud). Again, because of the influx of conference guests, there were not enough staff to serve drinks. On two occasions we waited in excess of 10 minutes for even a drinks order to be taken. The staff are working non-stop, but cannot keep up with the demand.

Despite all this, would we visit again? Probably yes. The hotel itself is in a great location, well maintained and immaculately clean. The rooms are amazing. However, it was a huge disappointment for service standards to have dropped since the hotel opened. More than likely, it was a combination of the extra guests for the conference and the poor weather. The hotel cannot afford to let their core business (hotel guests) suffer as a result of conferences. On this occasion, they did. There is a simple solution - either recruit more staff or stop the conferences.

Spent 4 days at the Xanadu Sept. 17-21.

The grounds are beautiful. Location not ideal for sight seeing (and I knew this when booking) unless you have a car. Taxis will cost you a small fortune. Saturday is their local market day. Take the city's local bus to and from the market (Dolmus) as it more economical (3 TL per person) and a nice experience.

The rooms are clean and large and the bathroom is gorgeous!! Minibar stocked daily with water, beer, soft drinks. Toiletries provided (body wash, shampoo, conditioner, cotton pads, cotton swabs (for ears, makeup etc), body lotion, bar of soap, shower cap) and replenished daily with whatever is missing.
Tea kettle with cups, tea and coffee also provided in the room.
Closet was huge and had a safe.
Balcony small but had table and chairs. Requested an ashtray 3 times....still waiting.

Beach towels provided (outside by the stage). No hassle in getting one or two or changing them and it appeared that there were always towels. Towels were clean.

No Wi-Fi in rooms, only in common areas. Be sure to request a WI-Fi card from reception upon check-in.

Upon check in, a welcome drink is waiting. Check in was painless and pleasant.
Check out wasn't. Had to ask reception 4 times to call a taxi. They will try and get you to use the hotel taxi which is more expensive. In addition, upon check in, I had requested a late check out (1:30 as opposed to 12:00 check out time) and was told, no problem. Denied upon check out. No attempt to offer alternatives. As a matter of fact, at 11:30, the maid had come to do up the room and I had to get ready and changed in the closet. Again, not a 5 star quality.

The spa is nice but expensive. There is a 'happy hour' between 12 and 4 where the services are discounted by 25 per cent (or at least during my stay. Not sure if this is seasonal, promotional etc. so please be sure to ask, just in case they have changed this.) If you are going for a traditional Turkish bath, save yourself the 60 EURO and find a local place. Not worth the money.

Beach and pool area are gorgeous. Loungers are gorgeous and comfortable. Beach area is man made. The beach is not sand but small pebbles and upon entry into the water, there are large rocks that you can easily swim over. There is also a long dock that you can jump off of (which many people did). There is a bar on the beach, but only serves water, coffee, juices and beer (no vodka etc. or food). There is also a large refrigerator stocked with water and the cool yoghurt drink right beside the bar. Beach area is small, but nice and spotless.
There is also another private sunbathing area. As you go down the stairs to go to the beach, make a left as opposed to the right. Maybe 15-20 chairs in this area. Swimming may not be the best there and there are warnings, but lovely to sit all day. Go early, the chairs fill up quickly.

The food was ok, not spectacular. Lots of variety, yet people were walking around trying to "find something to eat". The quality of food is definitely not 5 star. "Fresh omelets" are made from an orange coloured pre-mixed batter and the eggs are fried and cold. The cook wanted us to use up the cold fried eggs first which had been sitting there for who knows how long and would direct you to them rather than frying you up fresh, warm ones.

The service in the food area was pretty much non-existent. Out of the 15 times that I ate there, I was asked twice if I would like a beverage. Not acceptable. In order to be a 5 star, your service and your team of employees have to be 7 star (whether they are 16 or 46 years old) and service has to be nothing less than stellar. Many previous reviews have commented on the poor service, and yet, nothing has been done to rectify this problem. It really is bad.

Didn't know that there was an "entertainment team" until my last day. If this is true, they should be more visible. Some of the guests were mentioning maybe more activities (BINGO around the pool late afternoon etc).

Hotel should provide information in the rooms about the hotel, it's facilities, spa packages/prices.
There is an area where you can look at tours etc. hidden in the basement.

There is also a convenience shop, jewellery shop, and hair salon in the hotel, which I stumbled upon accidently. Again, this information should be communicated to it's guests. Expensive, of course as you are paying high prices for the convenience of them being located in the hotel. Handy though.

Nice, but not worth the money that I had paid.

Just returned from a fabulous week at The Xanadu Island Hotel...Arrived early hours and was upgraded to A Sunset suite. A large suite with beautiful bathroom, lounge area and 2 TVs. Rooms were exceptionally clean, and very quiet next to the smaller of the pools.Great service at the Archipelago bar, nothing too much trouble and the food served here throughout out the day was always tasty and hot. Some days didnt want to walk down to the main restaurant so enjoyed a lunch on the terrace.
The food in the main restaurant was excellent, great choice for everyone, it never seemed too busy and didnt have to queue ever. The only fault I found that the young staff were very tasked and were usually focused on clearing and tidying and could have given more attention to people wanting drinks service.
I loved the relaxed atmosphere, no wrist bands needed and you were trusted to take your pool towels and have as many as you wished. The staff were always smiling and always tried their best to please.
As a solo traveler I would certainly recommend this hotel, I felt safe and comfortable and enjoyed immensely my week here in fact I only wish I had booked to stay longer.

Had a relaxing week at Xanadu Island 19th to 26th of Sept. we purchased e visas before we left and this allowed us to quickly go through passport control and not queue for visas. Well worth the extra £3. Arrived by private taxi and very glad of that as the roads outside Bodrum are quiet bumpy and windy so probably would have felt ill on a coach.
Arrival at the resort and you are immediately impressed by the reception area. We received champagne cocktails while we checked in and we give a complimentary upgrade to a sunset suite. Suite was enormous, with fantastic views to Kos. Our shower wasn't working and we had to contact guest relations 3 days running before it finally got fixed, also had to phone for toilet roll, seemed a bit sloppy shouldered the responses.

Food was disappointing, having stayed in 5 star resorts in Belek, the food here didn't compare in the least. I think the hotel tries to hard to please all the different nationalities but doesn't have it's own identity. The buffet restaurant lacked leadership, there was no manager that I could see, the staff are very young and didn't really have a rapport with guests. Often there were no clean tables to sit at at mealtimes and you had to source cutlery etc by yourself. Not really what you expect of a 5 star resort. We went to the Italian restaurant and the food was lovely. There were two staff working there and they accessed the food from the main restaurant and seemed to spend most of their time fetching food and were not present in the restaurant.
The resort itself was lovely, the beach is made of small stones, not sand. We spent most of our time on the decked areas. These were very relaxing, easy access to swim and fridges contained cold drinks.
Great pizzas at the Archipelago bar, waiter there was very attentive, looking after his customers well. We went every lunchtime.
Although we had a relaxing time, I doubt if we would return. Not sure it was worth the money.

Room Tip: Sunset suite has fantastic views, ask for a high floor to appreciate

Just come back from the Xanadu Island, what a wonderful hotel.
Staff were wonderful and nothing was too uch trouble. The room was amazing, clean and just what we wanted. Food was tasty, wonderful choice and the waiting staff very attentive.

I found the surrounding area interesting and it was very easy to get about on the local transport.

We had a wonderful time and will return.

Room Tip: Rooms are quieter around the relax pool and all have a great view of Kos.

Me and my husband stayed at this hotel from the 13th September til the 20th September, we arrived early hours of the morning and when you walked in, it certainly had the WOW factor, we were checked in pretty quickly and shown to our rooms, we then crashed until early ours of the morning, we unpacked and went for breakfast, we was not impressed, it was not bad but it was not ok, we had a walk around to familiarise ourselves with the island, it was amazing, the views were stunning, the pools were amazing, a tad cold but once you were in it was lovely and refreshing as it was so hot, sunbeds were ok you could find a spare one or two if you went down after 10 otherwise they were hogged by people putting there towels on them but not actually using them til the afternoon which was irritating. The food was a big let down for us, I don't think they cater very much for the English, more so for the Germans and French, it was warm never hot, and the meat and fish was cooked outside every night on Bbqs, so if you did sit outside you would get all the smoke coming over you so we sat inside which was less busy. The waiters/waitresses speak very little English so when you order a drink with your meal they never got it right (only once out the whole week she got it right for me) god knows what I was drinking otherwise, but they do know how to say your welcome when you say thank you. They do food by the pools as well during the day which trust me is a lot better and a lot hotter then the restaurant, we ate here a couple of times during the day until my husband found a piece of metal in his cheeseburger, we was not impressed and never even got a apology, The pool drinks are ok sometimes to strong for me, but the beer is just cheap basic beer, The pools were lovely, never overfull with people which was nice, and the quietest pool was near the children,s pool, and even though there were young children and babies there it was never to noisy which was a bonus.

The rooms were lovely, my only fault is the beds, they are hard, we never slept brilliantly, the bathroom and shower are lovely they provide you with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap, bubble bath, lotion, cotton buds, cotton wool all which is replaced daily if you use it, a free laundry service was available too but we never used this. I would of liked a door on the loo as it is open planned so you get no private time, lol They also have A/C which is a godsend and a safe too. If you do go back to your room for any reason during the day, put your "do not disturb" switch on, as we had just come back from the Turkish baths so I decided to have a bath to get the remainder of the mud off, and the maids walked in while I was in the bath, so slightly embarrassing for us both, after that she kept smiling and laughing at me, so I felt a bit awkward after all they had cleaned the rooms so we was not expecting them to come back in.

The beach they have is lovely, but it is shingle like and you get a bar and watersports down there also, lots of sunbeds on the beach too, round the other side of the island they had jettys with sunbeds which you could use also, but you had to climb down a ladder to get into the sea which in the areas was rocky and they were very slippery and when ur getting bashed by the waves is a bit dangerous, I held on the ladder for a bit but slipped when I tried to head onto the rocks, so beware.

The transfers are about an hour, but it was the scariest hour of my life, they drive like taxis and white van drivers over here in the uk, I felt like I was on a rollercoaster with all the breaking and hard pulling away, not my idea of fun, but we made it safely, how I don't know.

We was delayed on the way back for 2 and a half hours at the airport, so it was a long day as our flight was early hours of the morning, so we had been up all day (bar a hours kip in the affo) so was shattered. The hotel was great tho and let us keep our room on til 5 which was a great help and no extra charge, I would go back to the hotel again, but something seriously needs to be done with the food.

Xanadu island was nice but kind of secluded, if you wanted to get out you had to get a bus or taxi as there was nothing really in walking distance. excursions were quite cheap we did a couple and it I must admit, it was lovely to get out the complex, do the free excursion that is available to you, it was good, and I have to mention Alfie our tour guide, he was funny with his stories and jokes, I did not like the market as they were too in your face and very rude but it was a adventure :)

Overall it was relaxing, bloody hot, pools lovely, food was terrible. we met 2 lovely couples over there too, which was lovely, it was nice to mix with English couples, hope you peeps got home safe and well

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely, the junior suites tho look in the garden in the middle, but this was never a i...
