Owner description: Much of the city of Patara remains buried in sand, which has helped to preserve many of the ruins. Of particular interest are the Amphitheatre, Necropolis and the monumental gate or Arch of Triumph.

“Fascinating, little visited ruins”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

The ruins of Patara, spread out over an extensive area, are worth a full day to explore. Compared to the tourist circus of Ephesus, the ruins, when we were there, were only visited by a few small tour groups, but are just as fascinating as any of the many other ancient sites we visited in our 6 weeks in Turkey. You need to be prepared to walk a reasonable distance, as the various ruins are quite spread out eg the lighthouse, Granarium etc, but are well worth it. Just take the time- this is not a 1 hour whistle stop-if you want to really appreciate it. The colonnaded street, the theatre, bouleuterion, Arch of Modestus are all spectacular, but take time to explore the various baths, necropolis etc

“Well worth a detour”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

We were visiting the (gorgeous) beach anyway so I took my teenage kids to see the ruins. We were absolutely blown away by the reconstruction of the assembly chamber - supposedly the oldest parliament building in the world. It's spectacular and if you are lucky you will have it completely to yourselves. It's like being alone on the Acropolis - if this building were anywhere else, you'd have to queue for hours to see it. The whole site is definitely worth a visit; if it impressed my teenagers, it'll impress anyone.

“Wonderful ancient ruins”
Reviewed June 10, 2014

The ancient ruins at Patara are a wonderful experience. Some of the ruins are sensitively, partially restored and there is good information about the site. We went late afternoon in May as the day was cooling down a little and were free to wander over the site and imagine how it might have looked. There is a lot to take in.The site is littered with goats, cows, the occasional shy tortoise and soaring storks. The cost is 5 turkish lira (£1.50) and that allowed us to go to the beach as well. You will need footwear to cross the sand. At the beach there are toilets, places to change and shower as well as food and refreshments.

A geourgeus antic city which is a must see. The ruins are still in good condition and some of them are under construction. Don't forget to see the lighthouse.

“Amazing ruins”
Reviewed May 25, 2014

We spent a few hours wandering around the ruins at Patara. They are a 30 min easy drive over the hill from Kalkan. They have reconstructed one of the amphitheatres and there is an exhibition in there about how they did it, very enjoyable. When you walk around these ruins and then see them from the top of the amphitheatre you can imagine how it was and easily visualise the area. An enjoyable trip for 5TL, well worth it.
