The defense fortress is part of the structures of the walled city of Manila referred to as Intramuros. Is located at the other end of Intramuros. Spend 3-4 hours here to read and understand some history. You can the last steps of José Rizal before his execution. Also you may visit The Postern of Our Lady of Solitude inside Fort Santiago.

Around the Med this would be an average attraction, but as it’s located in Asia, it has a different history, and becomes more interesting.

It’s nice to walk around, and see the various sights, but there is nothing spectacular.

Unfortunately for us Canon cameras were hosting an event and ruined the occasion, since there were advertising boards, and hundreds of participants dressed in bright red shirts spoiling all the views. We even had to pay to enter, which was annoying when they must have pocketed a large chunk of cash from Canon for them to take over the place, It was php75 each.

Worth stopping by if you have an hour or so to kill in Mania, or as part of an Intramuros visit, but don’t go specifically to see it.

The place is very historic, after all it's the start of Pinoy history as we 'western' people know today.
It's also very calm & peaceful inside, nice place to get away from the Manila craziness for a while.
And you get to learn all about Rizal, the national hero. His shrine & execution area is inside.

A nicely preserved part of the Spanish heritage in Manila. The uniformed guards add a special touch, and it is great fun to take photos together with them. A real gem in the sparse tourist offering for tourists in Manila. The surrounding area needs to be improved, and you need to take care not to be hit by a golf ball when scaling the walls of the fort.
