This used to be a prime destination for all things exciting. When you want to hangout and party back in the 90's,
Malate was the place
to be.Sadly, it is no longer what it used to be. The red light district is still alive, the area for clubs/bars though is dead. Despite some bars still open, people no longer flock to malate during the weekends not since other party destinations started flourishing like the fort, makati, resorts world, and even timog. I live in the area so iv seem the changes that has happened and although im sad that this is happening, unfortunately the local
govt did not do anything to preserve it. If not for some malls and manila bay, this once reknowed area would be totally forgotten. I hope the new administration with do something to revive thi once glorios part of manila.

They used to call it the gimmick station for everything, yes it has lived to its name but it is slowly being dated except for those bars that tried to renovate themselves. I find it exciting and dangerous walking here while looking for a place to hang out, there are a lot of crazy people and aggressive ones so you have to be alert sometimes. I usually stay where most people are, I feel safer there, haha.

It was great after most of the red light establishments were closed and lots of trendy bars and hangouts were opened in their stead.
These days though, like most of bright manila, it has lost it's lustre and trendy crowd-drawing power. Sadly a lot of the nice bars have either moved or closed down, replaced by street eateries and too many bars and cafes that may be here today but gone tomorrow.
Loitering men, women and kids abound, some asking for money, esp the kids.
I was born and raised in manila, but this part of it is not a place I'd willingly explore by myself.

This area is dangerous and dirty especially for tourist. Stay away as far as you can. Might as well stay in makati, ortigas, or fort bonifacio. Unless you are a poor tourist and have no money to spend then stay in this area.

You can still find interesting spots, but the city has allowed it to become dirty and more known for prostitution than historical or culture things. The bay is in the Malate District. There are some great old churches that are still holding Mass in them. Be prepared for the pimps and beggars at night. It is common to see entire families sleeping on the sidewalk on a piece of cardboard.
