My friend and I arrived at the hotel on 2 Dec 2008 at 10.30 am. We had to pay if we wanted to check in before 12 noon. Shampoo was not provided but had to be paid for. Two small satchets cost more than US$1.50. Since we paid a premium rate for the hotel room when we booked through a travel agent, we requested if they could give us the shampoo. No amount of pleading helped. They simply ignored us. Although they promised to call us when their supervisor returned at 9.30 pm so that we could speak with him about the shampoo, they never did. The bath towels in the room looked clean but did not smell clean. No drinkable water was provided. We had to go to the reception counter to get a flask of hot water ourselves.

The people of Philippines have always boasted that they are warm and friendly, but the staff at New Solanie Hotel fell far short of that standard. They are incompetent, unhelpful and unprofessional. I will never return again.

We were excited about staying at this hotel because it was in Malate and we read that the area had a lot of restaurants and nightlife. Unfortunately, we were mislead as this hotel is located in a smelly area and it is most unappealing. We have been to Asia before but we never experienced walking along the street of the hotel and smelling urine and food cooking at the same time. Not a pleasant experience!
As for the hotel, it's very basic. This hotel advertise itself as 3 star but it's not. Our room was depressing, the air conditioner smelled and it was installed at the level of our bed so we had to try to block the air coming out with our suitcases. Also, the bed was hard and the bedspread was short and hardly covered our full bodies. The staff was ok, not too friendly. Their menu is good value but we never dined there as we didn't want to stay in the hotel for long periods of time.

We spent our 5 days travelling to Makati (the CBD of Manila) which was 15 minutes away and stayed there for the whole day as it was clean and had lots of shopping and dinning options. We only went back to the hotel at night to sleep and have a shower.

I would recommend spending a bit more and staying in Makati which has more options for travellers.
