One of the best stores to buy ensaymada (sweet bread with butter and cheese on top). A bit pricey but worth it.

This has always been my favorite restaurant in this side of town. Even before Robinsons Ermita was built, this has been my favorite place for meeting journalists and other friends who wanted to meet me. It is quiet here thus it seems to be a favorite place to conduct interviews. They have the best lenggua estofado (ox tongue) dish here that one will ever taste, and please don't miss their roast beef. At the bakeshop, please don't miss ordering their ensaymadas and bread buns from their bakery.

One of the very few surviving old restaurants in the Malate area is Hizon's Cakes and Pastries, ( or Za's Cafe their old name ) . It serves one of the best ensaymadas in Metro Manila. There are 2 varieties of this is a baked bread topped with cheese and sugar . One is topped with (Edam) queso de bola or with regular cheese which is its more affordable version. They also come in regular and its bigger sizes. Their mamon tostado is a rectangular pastry with egg yolk and sugar. Their raisin breads and dinner rolls are baked fresh everyday. Made to order birthday cakes are also available on advance notice. Pricy but worth it !! Credit cards for take outs are not accepted . They have a separate counter for take outs.
