“Decent hotel in an ugly neighborhood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2014

Hotel is clean, with inside mostly made of original & colonial touch pitch-brown hardwood lumber furnishings, reasonably priced, fairly couteous staff. I got over with jetlag & felt rested after two days because i just stayed in the comfort of my room most of the time & also n the ante room to get good internet connections. But outside, the streets are filthy & stinks especially in the morning. This once elegant & popular location where the middle-upper class would come to dine, party & hang around in the 80' & early 90's has now become the haven of beggars, street kids, hawkers, pimps. Walking one evning from Robinsons mall of abt 4 blocks from this hotel, i got ugly invitations &proposals -one after another- from hawkers & pimps along the way. A solo foreigner or foreigner-looking guy (like me, lolz!)can always expect this. It's unfortunate that this decent hotel wd an illustrious history &beautiful beginning has to suffer an ugly neighboorhood. Mayor Erap pls do something!

Andy and Dolors from Canada

There is no better experience than arrive in a hotel at five o'clock in the morning and be greeted by smiling people when you expect the people to be half a sleep. The staff in Malate Pensionne did everything with a smile, no matter how incovenient it may have been for them. This pension is clean, reasonably priced, comfortable and very tastefully restored with the intention of preserving the building's historic value. To look for anything better for the price one pays here can be considered, in our opinion, a waste of time. We had very easy access to transpotation, restaurants, commercial centers, tourist attractions and entertainment.
During our two months in the Philippines we passed four times thru Manila and always ended up staying here. Malate Pensionne became our home away from home.
Good service, good location, good experience all around.

Originally booked three nights here. Arrived late and night staff gave us a cool reception. Showed us to our room which was clean and tidy. Tried to sleep but noise level kept me awake all night. Seemed there are a number of night clubs in the area that cater to the younger crowd that parties all night and sleeps all day. Not for us as we are older and past the brain cell killing parties. Next morning spoke with the owner about it and we moved out to another quieter neighbourhood. This is a great place if you are young and/or can handle a lot of noise. The owner had invested a lot of money to make it a nice place. If he could do something about the neighourhood think this would be an amazing place for people like my wife and I to stay. The location is convenient to the LRT and attractions in town.

If you want an unpleasant experience then stay here! This is worse than "Fawlty Towers" You are greeted by two very cold, unpleasant woman first up who have no idea about how to smile and look at every foreigner as inherently evil ............... they may have that right :)

You are then taken through a clean wooden corridor which is nice to basic rooms. I am pleased to say that the room was clean although the sheet on the bed had a gritty feel............ the shower did not work and the toilet is in a space smaller than a cupboard. Still for the price paid you cannot expect much more.

No fridge.

Once I was settled in I then went to meet a friend. She did not have iD so was not permitted into the accommodation area. That was ok, and went to a coffee shop along the road.

I then meet another woman later on as well who was to discuss a number of real estate opportunities with me. She was also refused entry after the security rushed in the lobby and said "no woman" allowed because she was a woman and I was a single guy. I think this establishment is owned and run by Muslims or Fundamentalist Christians.

Back to the coffee shop again!

That night after a reasonable sleep in a firm bed I looked forward to the FREE BREAKFAST ........... The free breakfast is a joke ..................... one piece of bread cut into 4 pieces with a coffee.

I had enough - this hotel was everything I did not want and moved to another.

When you are away you expect friendly, helpful service. Paying a few hundred pesos more for accommodation else where would be a good investment.

People often make a holiday. In this case the elderly receptionists and the aggressive door guard created a very unpleasant situation.

Malate Pensionne's primary concern is the safety of our guests since we market our property to families with children. Allowing some guests to bring in someone to walk our hallways defeats that purpose. There are many lodging places that don't care who their paying guests brings into his room, Malate Pensionne has a long standing reputation of not being one of them. Time and again, our returning guests tell me that that is one primary reason they come back to us when in Manila. They feel safe. We do have a garden or guest lounge where one can chat with their female friend who they've met outside. We're sorry that our strict policy has made you upset with us.

For a decent price (from 22 USD) you get safe room with a colonial furniture touch, temptational caffe bar downstairs, good location in Malate – various bars, shops, restaurants, money changers, market, Robinsons mall are in the vicinity and Intromorus is just 1-euro taxi fare away…
I also úsed their trànsfer to the airpoort which ứas fair and résonably priced.

good points: close to two shopping centers, coffee bean next door where you can get nice coffee and pastries, internet in the lobby, friendly staff
bad points: blood on the walls (i imagine from people killing mosquitoes), terrible showers, tiny room, a toilet that a cat wouldn't fit in.
but its as cheap as you would get so wasn't expecting much anyway

I wrote a review of this hotel several days ago, but after more bad news at this hotel I asked Tripadvisor to erase it so I could write this one.

If oyu check my previous reviews of hotels and restaurants, I am generally positive about them. But NOT for Malate Pensionne: the pits. The first job of a hotel is to provide rooms in which sleep is possible, maybe even comfortable. If this is what you expect/demand, this hotel is not for you. We checked in about noon and were given one of their aircon rooms with shower/bathroom. VERY nice wood and clean if very small. So far so good. BUT the room was on the south side and from dark to dawn we were blasted by karokes, discos, and stores/restaurants playing "my stereo is louder than your stereo. I went to bed at 9pm and got up at 7am: two hours of sleep, maybe.

So I went downstairs and asked for another room. THEY HAD ONE AVAILABLE and cleaned RIGHT THEN! In other words the room had not been occupied the previous night - yet we were given a super noisy room. Some service!

Then on Sunday, Mass was held in the small open area on the south side of the hotel. But at 11am or so. Not too bad and we had already moved. Then from about 2pm (we were out of the hotel) until 8pm there was a private party in this courtyard. Even on the north side it was thundering! Only good thing about it was that we were reassured that if a typhoon hit Manila or there was a force 8 earthquake, the building would still be standing.

Bottom line: the management/owner can't do much about the street noise on the south side, but to make additional money is comfortable with blasting his guests. I have worked in 46 countries, staying at hotels about 1/3 of my working life and this was the WORST experience I have ever had. Period.

A few minor complaints, but they are symptomatic of a deeper lack of concern for guests: 1. I asked the receptionist to turn on and input the password on their in-house computers to use the internet. she turned on the computer and then disappeared to the toilet for 15 minutes. We reserved a van to the airport. In the early morning I check with the same receptionist (who was using the internet). Yes, she said without looking, it's in the book. But an hour later when we went to leave with many boxes, the van had already gone and all there was for us was a small, private Avanza: cramped and uncomfortable - and 600 pesos. We could have taken an Avanza taxi for 250 off the street!

Another word of warning. No fault of its own, but this hotel is located in the heart of the bar/karaoke/club district. You cannot walk down the street without being approached by "working girls", pimps, and touts - even when you are with your wife. NOT a good neighborhood for kids.

Room Tip: Make SURE you have a north-facing room (toward Ermita, Robinson's Mall and the U.S. Embassy)

The noise out in the street is something we and other hotels in the area have raised with the local authorities. We and other hotels have filed complaints about this. We are pleased to say that that is now being addressed by the local authorities. When one doesn't get a good night's sleep, it could make an otherwise pleasant person into an angry unpleasant one. The Christmas season in Malate and most places in the Philippines does bring out noisy celebrations. If one is a light sleeper and we are aware of it, we would not advise Manila as the place to stay during the Christmas and New Year Holiday. Too much street revelry going on. Personally, I completely empathize with your sentiments.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Malate Pensionne is located in the heart of Malate, a district of Manila on Adriatico St. (formerly Dakota St under the US Commonwealth & Calle Nuevo under Spain). Our building was built by Americans who leased the land from our grandfather to house American workers. When the lease ended, our mother turned it into Dakota Apts. Returning from her European trips & learning of how Italians welcomed weary travelers to their home like family members, she turned Dakota Apts into Malate Valero Pensionne, now well know as the Malate Pensionne with the slogan, "Your home away from Home". As far as we know, we are the only hotel in the world with a strict policy of only registered guests can walk our hallways. We are about a mile from the US Embassy & Rizal Park. About 2 miles from Intramuros, the old walled city of Manila, a 5 min. walk to Robinson Mall. 15 min. by car to Mall Of Asia & 11.5km to the upscale Makati City & Bonifacio Global City.
