“The food is the real gem here”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2013

As a Skymiles member, Diamond medallion is the highest level you can achieve. Upon entering the room, I thought, despite the name of the hotel, it was not quite there yet; it reminded me of the rooms in EDSA Shangri-la before renovation--the design, furnishings, bathroom. Here you have a better TV and a more comfortable, fluffier bed. An advantage over other hotels is aside from 2 complimentary bottled water, you also get 2 bottles of fruit-flavored tea and a pack of Oreo cookies for free! Not to mention the fruit platter. The bathroom, though, is crying "renovation!". Once you experience the food you realize the name of the hotel is well-deserved. I ordered room service of maguro sashimi, gindara teriyaki, and sinigang (sour broth with salmon). The tuna (6 pieces for 10 dollars) and the codfish (10 dollars for 100 grams) can give any restaurant in Tokyo or Osaka a run for its money. The soup (8 dollars for a medium bowl with steamed rice) was one of the best of its kind locally. Then there are the promotions at their Corniche restaurant. Thursdays, there is the steak spree where you can eat all the sirloin, prime rib, tenderloin to your heart's desire; a carnivore's delight for only 60 dollars. Fridays, it is the salmon buffet's turn. For night owls, they also have the weekend late-night buffet (Friday and Saturday) from 10:30 pm to 2:00 am with free-flowing soda and lemonade for a reasonable 20 dollars. If you are traveling with family, then the set menus (good for 4-6 persons) for room service including pizza, pasta, salads, chicken, ice cream and pitcher of iced tea should be worth the 45 dollar price. If you crave Italian they also have a separate restaurant, not to mention the highly recommended Yarukuen Japanese resto. A little birdie actually told me that the very famous Kitchen Master himself, Pablo "Boy" Logro had his early beginnings in this very hotel. The poolside drinks promo was also tempting, unfortunately I did not have enough time to try. On Saturdays and Sundays, there is free shuttle to some tourist spots (Intramuros, San Agustin church, Metropolitan museum) and of course to the sprawling Mall of Asia and even as far as Shoemart Trinoma in Quezon City. The hotel-airport transfer service by Avis was also very efficient, on time all the time. Next time, I might try their upgrade offer for just 25 dollars per night. As to the location, since they are next-door neighbors with the Hyatt, whatever the other hotel can boast of in this regard they can match as well. If you are looking for a good hotel with REALLY good food, then the Diamond should be a real gem!

The service and food at this hotel was exceeding my expectations. There were allways somebody ready to assist. The choices and the quality of the food was past anything I have experienced before. A Japaneese restaurant at the hotel was also a five star experience. Highly recommended.

Very luxurious, posh, fancy, gorgeous hotel. We stayed here for 2 nights on the start of our honeymoon in the Philippines.

We upgraded our room on arrival to a diamond club room which Gave us a lounge pass.

This was excellent and really made our stay. Superb food and service in the lounge and very convenient local for us being only 1 floor above the lounge on the 26th floor.

Good location and close to several malls

Our only issue with the hotel was the Lobby and downstairs eating area felt quite pretentious.

Also the problem with the hotel was the travel agents "in house" quoted us a price for the next part of our trip and completely over priced the travel and hotel expenses. We organised it ourselves for half the price!! So just bare than in mind.

But saying that, We would definitely stay here again.

Diamond hotel is top notch and we had organised an hotel transfer for 12.45pm from the airport. Since our flight was a bit early we rang the Diamond Hotel to pick us up an hour earlier than planned. A hotel car arrived promptly and the driver was very helpful and friendly.

Upon arrival reception were aware of our booking and tried to persuade us to upgrade. We declined so as to save our money for shopping.

Unfortunately the rooms we were allocated on the 7th floor stunk of stale cigarette smoke. So we requested another room. We were given a new room on the 10th floor which not only smelled nicer but also had an LCD TV (the one on the 7th floor had the old style one).

The beds were a wee bit hard but wasn't uncomfortable and the pillows and doona were very fluffy.

Free WiFi was only available in the lobby. Would have been great it it was also free in the rooms.

Breakfast was the highlight of our stay - such variety and tasted great too.

To try and keep the kilos off (since we were eating so much on holidays) we also used the hotel gym which seemed quite new and well equipped.

Apparently it's not safe to walk from the hotel to the closest department store (Robinson's) so we used the hotel taxi which was reasonably priced at about $7 one way.

We only stayed 2 days at Diamond as it's quite expensive.

We would consider staying at Diamond again.

All in all, it was not a bad stay! Quite disappointed with the reception staff not confirming us the details of our reservation when we arrived at the hotel. Booking was done online, through agoda.com for 1 person by mistake. It was my husband who did the booking and he did it in a hurry, afraid that I might see and spoil his surprise that explains the reservation glitch. After the booking is done he called the hotel immediately to forward his requests as we just got married and it was our first stop to our honeymoon trip. Arrangements for honeymoon have been requested over the phone and have been asked during check-in if it is ready before we enter our room. The receptionist seemed not aware of that. I have to butt into the conversation as my husband looked confused why the receptionist seemed to have no clue. I had to repeat again that we are newly weds and that my husband planned this stay as a surprise for me and that hotel has been informed and he has requested for honeymoon arrangements to be done. Not only that, he even requested for early check-in and it has been noted in their system but how come that the most important request is overlooked?!So okay...no arrangements, no nice amenities, and again, "all requests are subject to availability" but really an important request like that cannot be accommodated by a 5 star hotel? All hotels abroad are preparing nice things for newly weds granted that information is provided. Anyway...I have no idea if it is practiced in the country though .But not a single remark was given by the receptionist who check us in to acknowledge us, instead he tried to up-sell and he informed us that it is possible only to provide honeymoon amenities upon request but the mere fact that it was phoned, has been informed ahead prior to our actual arrival and again during check-in were more than enough if they really care about their guests, we felt disregarded especially after such a long journey. Funny thing is that 2 passports were handed over upon check-in and the check-in staff again did not say anything about the booking made for 1 person when we are telling him personally that we are on our honeymoon and he sees a couple in front of him. Thanks to the waitress or hostess during breakfast calling our attention that only 1 person is entitled and not what we knew for 2, only then that we realized there was a booking mistake. It could have been dealt with when we phoned the hotel and upon arrival not to find out later and leaving me really surprised with disappointments by the hotel staffs overlooking basic details. The quality of customer service in the reservation and reception was not what I expected for such a hotel and for the amount my husband has paid for that stay!

Room Tip: Regardless of the view, rooms are well kept and comfortable!

Modern attractive "designer" hotel in a slightly lugubrious area. Stylish autumnal decor with all facilities.
Checking in: a hiccup with my room as I was given a room that was not cleaned. Corrected immediately and with telephoned and written apologies from almost everyone employed at the hotel! Whew!! Checking out: no problems but as always you need to have plenty of time.
The room: I had a spacious, spotlessly clean, well-equipped room on the 18th floor with a magnificent view over Ermita and Manila Bay. Pleasant autumnal colours and comfortable queensize bed. Facilities included iron and ironing board, tea/coffee making, complementary cosmetics - but only 1 shampoo for 2 people. Well furnished and included desk, sofa and hundreds of cushions!
3 irritations: each lamp had to be switched off individually and one had to be disconnected, and only 3 hours free internet. The map provided was incorrect with wrongly located hotels and buildings.
There was no disturbing noises and everyone provided excellent service.
Security: far too much security with sniffer dogs and x-ray arch with desk check of all bags etc and body frisking before entering the building. Very much overdone and irritating especially as it was not efficient: I mistakingly took in a dangerous object without it being detected. It was irritating to have to use the room key to operate the lift for your floor even when other people had already activated the lift for their floor.
Meals: I ate only breakfast there and the buffet was exceptionally good. However because of my low IQ I didn't understand that the jug of coffee was in fact a modern "cup" and the shallow plate was in fact a dish for cereals etc. You may also need a map of the breakfast room to help you find where all the different food is located. Go walk around first before choosing! One very big plus: they had a wide variety of tasty, delicious, nutritious bread (not the doughy cottonwool- like stuff you get served at most other hotels!)
Location: a big minus is that it is in an area where street pickpockets and would-be young criminals abound so be careful where you walk! If you know the way it is fairly safe and takes only 10 minutes to walk to Robinson's Mall but keep your money well hidden and be aggressive if young punks (14 - 16 year olds) try to hassle you as they operate in gangs and one distracts you as the other robs you. It is easy to walk to Pedro Gil LRT station (10 minutes) if you want to experience travelling as many filipinos do. It will also get you fit as there are usually many steps to climb. It is limited to 3 lines but is efficient, safe, inexpensive and will get you there quicker than a taxi! Avoid the rush hour but it is crowded all day. Women and the elderly are prioritised with a waiting section on the platform reserved for them!
All in all a high class hotel with a few minor detractions.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the upper floors with a view

Best thing about Manila Diamond is the facility - the rooms are spacious with high-end furniture and appliances. The drapes and carpet are clean; the room is very spacious. Two big windows offer guests with a spectacular view of Manila Bay especially during sunset.
Aside from the usual complimentary bottled water, MDH went a step further with free bottled juices and a pack of cookies, which surely adds to customer delight.
Next best thing is location - minutes away from historic Malate Church, iconic Aristocrat and convenient Robinson's Place, where we got to watch a late night movie.
Service is also very good - personal and warm. This was evident during check-in, dinner and breakfast. We stayed overnight and failed to try their famous Japanese restaurant, Yurakuen. Maybe next time around.
Things to be improved - wifi inside the rooms and more staff during check-out hours. Another thing, I don't think it is necessary to require guests to open their luggage and toiletry bags when they enter the hotel. Guards were checking almost all items inside the luggage. I felt I was going through airport security.Too much privacy invasion, despite assurances that it is only for security check.
Nevertheless, our stay in Diamond Hotel was very comfortable and made more memorable with the delicious dinner and breakfast offerings at Courniche.
