“Historic Manila Hotel offers classic feel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2007

The Manila Hotel is know in the city as the place where important visitors "and diplomats" stay. And they make you feel that way. There are dozens of workers in the lobby who are all very friendly, from the front desk workers to the young man who presses the elevator button for you. The feel is pre-World War II, when the hotel was one of the greatest in the world (and MacArthur's home and headquarters). It's no longer among the world's best, but if you like history and a unique place to stay, this is it. The lobby is busy with a range of travelers and on weekends, multiple wedding parties (it's a popular spot for weddings and receptions). There's a bar usually with a band in the evenings.

Did not try the Champagne Room, but the regular restaurant is wonderful, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The buffet offers blend of FIliipino, American and international food. (I did have trouble with service when I sat alone... a cultural thing?)

The hotel's location is also great, and there is always a line of taxi drivers waiting to take you anywhere you want to go. Be sure to ask for a tour of MacArthur's suite before you leave.

One note: with the closing of the US military bases and the recent violence against Western visitors in the outlying parts of the Philippines, there are not many American tourists in Manila these days. So when they find out you're from the USA, they'll treat you like royality!

I have just returned from a trip to the Philippines and used Manila Hotel as my bas.
e.

I do not know what it was like under the previous ownership but I was extremely pleased with my stay there. Staff very friendly and obliging - food in Champagne Restaurant was excellent. The small orchestra was very pleasant and invited guests to choose their preferred music. Breakfast buffet was not particularly good but quite adequate with plenty of choice. Room was good and very clean and staff obliging and very helpful.

I will certainly stay there again.

Stayed for 3 nights with my father. A haven amidst all the hustle and bustle of Manila. Great service and old world charm! Hotel has a lot of history. We enjoyed deceptively deadly pina coladas made with fresh pine apple juice in lobby while waiting for friends. Located right next to Intramuros Park.

I tried to contact the hotel by e-mail to make a reservation, the three e-mails sent over a two-week period got no reply. Not that good, but since the manila hotel reservation page has no safe encryption, I did not dare to provide my creditcard data.

We had a twin at the 16th floor, bathroom and toilet shows its age, it didn't feel that clean and was certainly not stylish. Beds were so so. Staff were not helpful, you have to get your suitcases from your taxi yourself, get them through the X-ray machine and bring them to your room yourself. Bell boys rather glaze like statues.

We left our luggage for two days in luggage storage while we went away for a 2-day trip to the north of the Philippines, only to find one of the suitcases to have been opened. Items were missing. The duty manager asked her staff if someone had opened the suitcase and had stolen something. Surprisingly, no one admitted to. She did not want offer compensation and was confident this would not hurt the reputation of the hotel, as she put it "we are never short of guests".

If you want to soak up the atmosphere, drink a cup of tea or coffee in the lobby or have dinner. Do not stay here, it's waste of your money and service is in no way reflected in the rooms' rate. At US250 a night, you even need to be careful not to have things stolen from your luggage. It's truly terrible.

  • Liked — the lobby
  • Disliked — all but the lobby, low service level, overpriced, staff steals from luggage
  • Tips/Secrets — have a drink in the lobby, stay at another hotel

This is clearly a hotel for those who love the "old times" style. The hotel has a rich history and this can be felt in the public areas and the old wing rooms. The colonial atmosphere is nice and authentic, all rooms are spacious and those on the bay side are definitely the better ones. Imagine seing the ferrys and cruise ships at arm's length in front of your window! Caution - not all rooms can be fitted with broadband access. The only downside is the level of the general infrastucture - pool area, restaurant etc are still somewhere in the late 70ies (filippino style) which can be amusing but is not to everybody's liking. The quality of breakfast and food is average. The most attentive and friendly staff make up for any shortcomings in other areas. This hotel is a great place to start or end your Philippines experience with. For pure business travellers there are more generic and perhpas more appropriate hotels in town (mostly in Makati). Stayed already at the Peninsula and the Shangri-La - both are high class business and tourist hotels in busy areas but lack the charm of Manila Hotel. Try one of the excellent fish restaurants in walking distance from the hotel on the bay promenade!

Don't be fooled by the exterior. Anybody who gives this hotel an unfavorable review has standards set too high. We found this hotel exceptional in the interior beauty as well as the highly qualified staff and outstanding service. Selection of food was excellent even though the pancake breakfast buffet at the Ilang-Ilang was served chilled. Who cares, right? The hotel is well worth the price. The Manila Hotel deserves the five star rating. Now we know why MacArthur lived there for two years.

From March 31st 2006 until April 4th 2006, we stayed as part of our holiday in the Manila Hotel. The ambiance is great, classic and with style. The food/ buffet in the different outlets is great and the service as well. The waitresses and waiters are very friendly. The room (Deluxe)itself could use a refurbishment, because it is old! Though the rooms are spacious, and comfortable to stay in. We had a nice view over the famous Intramuros. The pool could also use a refurbishment, and unfortunately the bartender was sleeping 1 time. This was at 3pm. The girls at cashier desk (check out) are not smiling at all, treat you as if you are lying when saying you did not use the minibar, and they are way to serious. Due to this behaviour, I was upset, after I had a great feeling about my stay. There was no question like; I hope you enjoyed with us, and we hope to see you again, have a pleasant trip, ec, nothing like that, and I think, that your staff, should be the key to the success of the hotel. These girls could learn much more! Anyhow, I would recommend this hotel due to spacious rooms, and good food!
