“Avoid Doormans "Hotel" Taxi Service Ripoff--get your own taxi”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2011

La Corona is, overall, a wonderful hotel. The rooms have modern style, the employees are helpful and super efficient, the location, though in an immediately seedy part of town, is wonderful for visiting nearby Intramuros and the National Gallery of Art etc. I would recommend LaCorona but....

....Just one problem. The Bellman/Doorman are in cahoots with the Hotel Taxi/Shuttle (made it sound like it was a free shuttle!!! ...ie until you swing the taxi door open, are just about all the way into the taxi only to find out it's priced at 5, yes I wrote 5 TIMES the price of a normal metered taxi cost.)

Facts: Going to visit nearby Intramuros. The Hotel Doorman, con artist, helpfully and enthusiastically says, "I'll help you get a taxi. Use the hotel shuttle!" I think to myself, "Hotel shuttle!? Great! Didn't know they had one!" And then the ruse: Hotel Shuttle Taxi cost: 300peso. After refusing, actual metered taxi cost 60 peso.

This reflects so poorly on an otherwise fine, reputable hotel.

A 500% increase in cost is dishonest. La Corona: please clean up your Doormans acts. They reflect poorly on all the other fine honest employees working hard for La Corona.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Greetings from BEST WESTERN Hotel La Corona Manila!

Thank you for recently staying with us and for your comments. Indeed your feedback is a valuable source of information for us to continue to strive at exceeding our guests’ expectations.

Reading through your comments, we apologize for failing to meet your expectations. We certainly took note of your comments with regards to your overall experience with our hotel. We would just like to clarify that the hotel doesn’t have a hotel shuttle or service car. What the hotel offers is a PAID service car which is outsourced. We have already briefed our Bellman’s to make sure it is properly explained to guests what our service cars offers. Rest assured that this will be shared to the rest of our BELLMAN team as well.

Should you decide to visit us again, please let me know. It would be our pleasure to welcome you back.

loved this hotel , service great and we stayed in a suite food good housekeeping also great.
used their hotel car to transfer to angeles city and it was on time and driven safely.
only problem was night time noise , our suite was on the corner of the hotel and subject to noises in the small hours.
this is the only problem and if you stay in part of town maybe you should expect it.
every other aspect of this hotel was very good and we are sure that there are rooms with a quieter aspect available.

Very poor location - not safe to go out at night except in a taxi. Be prepared for locals to try to sell you things through the window while eating your breakfast or offer girls or drugs/stimulants to male guests directly outside the hotel at night . On a busy road, so rooms at the front of the hotel are noisy all night as windows offer little protection from constant traffic noise.
Entirely unsuitable for children as many single male guests "entertain" young Philippino girls on a regular basis without being challenged by any of the staff. Staff however, are friendly and helpful and service levels are reasonable.
The hotel lift is antiquated, small and not very safe (1930's style)
Difficult to believe how this hotel has such a good rating on the hotel guide for Manila. Far from the expected "Best Western" standards.

It deserves its high ranking here on TA. Clean and adequate-spaced room and bathroom, comfortable bed with nice clean sheets and reasonable rates with a good breakfast buffet. The room was well-lighted as well but could also be dark when needed as when one wants to take a nap in the afternoon.

I only wish there were 4 regular-sized pillows on our bed instead of 2 pillows and 2 throw pillows. The air conditioner worked fine and so did the refrigerator that was fully stocked with drinks for sale. At the bedside table were a cup of instant noodles, cookies and chips also for sale.

There was cable TV with lots of channels. The free wi-fi's password was given at check-in. Signal was good. The deposit that was required at check-in was readily refunded upon check-out. Transportation is not a problem as taxis, jeepneys, etc. are abundant but traffic may be a concern even though the hotel is along a one-way street.

Smelled a hint of smoke in our non-smoking room but it was only about a 2 on a scale of 10 and could be easily ignored.

Doors have keycard locks and are more secured from the inside by a chain lock and a double lock.

Bathroom has the basic toiletries and amenities. Water pressure was ok and hot water was available. The shower curtain was spotless and the towels were clean.

The old room safe could not accommodate a small laptop but was user-friendly. The open style wardrobe area also had hangers and a pair of disposable slippers. I most appreciated the luggage rack beside it.

There were available sockets to plug-in gadgets both in 110 & 220 volts.

Complimentary bottled water as well as coffee and tea-making facilities were also provided.

We didn’t use the old elevator after 2 tries because it was a hassle to use. One had to open the door and another accordion door to get in as well as get out. It was easier to take the stairs if one didn't have luggage.

Although the hotel is in a very convenient location (near tourist spots, the Supreme Court, the Philippine General Hospital, Robinson’s Mall, etc. etc. etc.), the surrounding area is littered with garbage. Some streets even have piles along them. One time, while outside the hotel, a cockroach even crawled over my sandaled foot.

The hotel is not as near Robinson’s Place as I’d like but luckily discovered that pedicabs could take you to or fro for only about $1 per way for 2 persons.

Not all the staff were friendly but they weren’t rude either. Although quick to offer all the guests coffee, the waiters at the breakfast buffet could use a smile and some warmth. The same goes for some front desk staff.

All in all, I’d definitely consider staying at this hotel again should I need to be in the area. It’s fair value for money. If only it could extend its cleanliness to the entire Ermita area, it would be great.

This hotel is not in an a- one neighborhood but do not let that deter you. The suite is beautifully and comfortable desinged and decorated. You can freeze with the air conditioning if you so choose. Having a bathtub filled with water that does not come from a tankless water heater is a pleasure plus the oversized overhead shower is delightul. The restaurant is 5 star as far as I am concerned after some of the "better" restaurants I have eaten in and the prices are very reasonable. But the staff is magnificent. Any problem or concern you have will be dealt with instantly, if possible. They have drivers, such as Jose Uy Pal, or Joe, who know everything and are even your most inexpensive ways to get around. The cafe workers, the front desk staff, led by Rica who will actually answer your emails, and all the rest of the staff are truly special. This is not the cheapest hotel but from the most expensive. The value for your money is here.

This my 5th night here and I like this place. The breakfast buffet is great! They have eggs, fruit, toast, etc. every day, but they change the meats and veggies. Juice, coffee, water, yogurt, excellent service, friendly waiters. One thing that shocked me is that they allow smoking in one side. The room is nice, clean, decent lighting, quiet. Aircon is powerful, although it blows against the wall and onto the bed. Just need to adjust... They keep a "security" light on all night outside the window, so I needed to make sure the drapes were shut well and the velcro tabs were stuck together. WI-FI works well in the room, but I could not send emails from my Thunderbird client even after I discovered the SMTP outgoing server settings. Finally, they have a van for hire, which is nice - and a tour desk in the lobby. Great location near Robinson's with a Jolibee's right across the street.
