View of the Manila sunset from the Skydeck is simply amazing. Food is great. A place where you can enjoy the view. Drinks are not over priced. It is value for the money not to mention how splendid the view is.

Dear sir,

Greetings from The Bayleaf!

Thank you very much for sharing your kind comments on Trip Advisor! We are so happy to know that you enjoy the views in our roof deck lounge. We actually just built another deck on top of the existing Sky Deck for a truly memorable viewing.
We look forward to welcoming you back next time you're in Manila!

Regards,
Ed

This is a very nice hotel with stylish modern rooms. Rooms are rather small, but the bathroom has plenty of space. The windows only have single walled glas and therefore street noise is clearly present in the rooms (5th floor). In the evening city life within intramuros comes to a complete stop, so this doesn’t bother you at night. This hotel is merely usefull to spend the night and eat. There are no extras such as spas and pools.

And eating is what you definitely need to do there! The restaurant (9 Spoons) has a superb cuisine, but I can’t understand why not all charges are included in the prices listed on the menu. Taxes are included, but not the 10 % service charge and not the local taxes. I am allergic to places where they have hidden costs that are nicely mentioned in a small foot note. But don’t let this stop you and try out the menu. You definitely have to order the Kanji beef salad, this is the absolute winner.

The staff is among the most friendly and helpfull we came across during our 4 week trip through the Philippines. If you’re looking for an affordable but luxurious hotel with a great cuisine in the city centre, look no further.

I recently returned from a business trip staying at the Bayleaf Hotel, in Intramuros, Manila. The hotel is a wonderful boutique hotel,complete with modern decoration that would be fit in New York (my home). The staff were all attentive, cooperative and extremely helpful. The view from the rooftop deck is amazing. The food , particularly the Nine Spoons restaurant is a veritable feast everyday, with delicious local and international choices. The hotel is affiliated with neighboring LPU, particularly the hospitality management and culinary institute. Once you stay you will see, why I consider the Bayleaf to be a true gem in Manila !

Room Tip: My business associate and I had adjoining rooms, much easier to coordinate and work

A traveler looking for the finest upscale pampering might not find this hotel so appealing, but anyone who wants to be immersed in the the history of the Philippines, what that history has produced in the modern day, and be treated graciously and attentively in the process will be very satisfied with The Bayleaf. Yes, the Bayleaf is somewhat removed from some of the urban conveniences that many tourists might enjoy, and the surrounding neighborhood is very dark and perhaps a bit "sketchy" at night, but this is as real a part of Manila as any, where people are living their lives and trying to navigate as best they can. The hotel is positioned well enough to create an "island" of security for anyone who might be otherwise concerned about safety after dark, and hotel staff were wonderful about advising me about the best/safest ways to move around both at night and during the day.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a more stellar group of employees than those at the Bayleaf. While courtesy to guests is mandatory at all hotels, I found the Bayleaf staff to be wonderfully human and not just seeming to follow an employee manual or script.

Besides having Fort Santiago across the street to explore, I enjoyed seeing students coming and going regularly in the streets around the hotel, adding to its real world ambience.

Traveling globally, I rely on TA to chose hotels. This rating has shaken my faith in TA's collective judgment. My advice is to go past all the gushing reviews and read the "average" and "poor reviews" before you book. I wish I had.

Don't get me wrong, the hotel is fine, but the Number 1 hotel in Manila? No way.

Top 3 pros and cons for my rating, staring with the pros:

Pros:
* attentive staff who take the time to go out of their way to be helpful.
* good breakfast
* clean and tidy rooms

Cons:
* Hotel charges a deposit to your credit card as soon as you pre-book on line. Cue warning bells going off. Then, although we guaranteed our booking online by credit card, at check-in they insisted we pay for our entire stay up-front. This is not standard practice in my experience unless you pre-book a package, which we did not. Makes you feel trapped (which we did).
*They do not have a gym, spa or pool, and there is not one within walking distance.
*We were forewarned that the surrounding area was not the best but that is something we have encountered in other places, so we opted for the trade-off - the chance to see a historic part of Manila in exchange for a less than ideal locale. Indeed, the location is dodgy and I was glad that I was traveling with friends.

This is not the hotel to stay if you want to stroll around taking in the sights before or after a nice dinner.There is nothing within immediate walking distance and we were warned not to venture out after dark, so scratch the main reason we chose the hotel/area.

Everything is perspective. Having traveled to many places around the world, I trusted my gut reaction that said "move hotels". So we did.

Dear sir,

Greetings from The Bayleaf!

My apologies on this late response to your comments.

Though not exactly delightful to hear, we truly appreciate hearing such still. Despite the hotel falling short of your expectations, you've rated us fairly well by giving the good side of things and appreciating the staff's attitude on service. and that sir, is something we are very appreciative about.

We are truly sorry that we have disappointed you with our location. I just wish that we can do something quite urgently about that. In fairness to all other travelers, I wish to share a few things;

- Intramuros is the oldest place in the city. While is has a lot of history to tell such as the 440 year old church, the museums, the walls, etc, it is also sadly a "work in progress" still. There are informal settlers which make the nearby surrounding quite dodgy. There are projects government projects currently in place to take care of this as we progress. Despite that though, it is generally safe and so far, most of our guests appreciate and understand the socio- economic conditions inside this place or the city in general. The plus side, as we've been often told, is the walls inside Intramuros tend to keep you away from the chaotic side of things.

- Unfortunately, we do not have a pool and a gym. This is published in our website. We regret not being able to inform you that there are plenty of activities, shops, spas, salons, malls literally just minutes away from our hotel. The mall in fact is less than 10 minute walk and the biggest mall in Asia just about 20-30 minutes via a cab. Since there are universities in the area though, there are no bars within walking distance. This is a government restriction and we could only agree with that. We do have a roof deck bar on the hotel though.

-Our guidelines on deposits, credit cards and all are by industry standards and certainly not exclusive to us alone. We regret that you felt trapped with that arrangement.

- The Trip Advisor ranking is only a bonus to us, sir. What is foremost in our minds is to make our guests comfortable and generally happy about us. If they leave happy and contended with the experience and value they get from their money, we are already a winner. And we feel sad if we fail our guests. Becoming number 1 then becomes meaningless. We can only do better next time to meaningfully claim the recognition that was accorded us.

Everyone's opinion, such as yours of course, is to be respected.

The team here at The Bayleaf wishes you all the best in your future travel! Our apologies on not making your stay as memorable.

Sincerely,
Ed Vitug

Surrounded by the walls of the Intramuros, the Bayleaf is in an ideal location. You can take a walking or a pedicab tour of the old city right from the hotel door. McDonalds is also right next door. The breakfast is an egg station and usual Asian and European offerings served in restaurant on the top floor with beautiful views of the old city. The rooms are a tad tiny but has floor to ceiling windows on two sides of the room with great views and the bathrooms are generously sized. The bed is comfortable. There is a piano in the lobby which is played by pianist in evenings.
We had a great stay there.
