“disappointing for its good review at tripadvisor”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2011

we chose this place based on tripadvisor reviews and I booked a room for one night arriving late 11PM. When checking in there was not enough sheets (we were just given a blanket because they ran out) and the room looked used with the bathroom unkept. We paid for a hot shower room but the the showers didn't work either. There is a central warm water shower bathroom outside. it looks like the owner really does not care about this place. Staff is very friendly but out of support. I will never go back there and felt ripped off.

Dear Zenfinger,
Well i can affirm strongly that we do care about our place. The proof is that we are always take time to answer the reviews from our disappointed guests.
Well we start to be known now in Manila and the question remains the same. There will always be a difference between what you expect and what you get.
None of the reviews on this site are fake, the place is very clean and friendly. The building is old and we have a hard time and it takes a lot of efforts to maintain.
The rooms are not used as you say, they are just basics. We are actually finishing to decorate some of them in order to make them look better.
I want also to remind that we are a guesthouse and not a hotel. Our prices are very low range and trust me one of the best deal of Manila.
So if you felt riped off paying 1200 pesos for an aircon room with private bathroom, free wifi access, free coffee and tea and access to an open kitchen, you will certainly be happy to pay up to 2000 Pesos or more in a cosy hotel nearby, where you will be left alone in your spacious room with no contact with the staff or other guests.
The final point is that our staff has all our attention and it is certainly not for nothing that they have all remained with us for more than a year.
I feel sorry you didn't like your stay with us but we wish you a good trip in the Philippines

We stayed there on our arrival in Manila, and again in while in transit from the north to the south and finally the night before flying home.
Well is guess that if we stayed three times in the same place, that means we love it.
Good location, very friendly and helpful people, and good value for money.
Rooms are basic but very clean.
And we have been able to meet some fellow travellers in the common place (very good idea).
And of course, free wi fi is a must.
We recommend this place.

I am not saying this guesthouse is terrible but it is not what I expected.

The staff is friendly and accomodating. When I reach at 5am, they allow me to check in immediately despite I can only check in the the same afternoon.

Room is basic and nothing to complain about. The common shower has no hot water and in the evening, there are mosquitoes. So please bring insect repellant with you.

Wi-Fi is reliable and since I am staying a room without safety box, they do have common locker along the corridor for your use.

What annoyed me is that my room assigned is with a bunk bed. Each bed has a mattress. When I was not around, they entered my room without my permission and remove one of the mattress. That is not an issue but the real issue is that they enter my room without my permission!

There is no security on the ground floor. The only time I see a security is when I arrive. The rest of my two days there, I see none.

So if you can afford another P1500, there are definitely some other options for you to choose along Mabini Street.

Dear Guest,

Your note is actually not that bad and we thank you for your contribution.

However, i would like to spot a few points:

- The room you had cost only 650 Pesos a night, which is i believe, one of the cheapest private room you can find in Manila. So of course it is a little bit small but it has its own privacy and is very quite because situated on the inside of the guesthouse.
Our most expensive room is only 1200P and offers double bad, aircon and private bathroom. Once again one of the best value for money in Manila.
For 1500 P i agree that you can fond better around. The question is always how much you are willing to pay.

- Regarding the security, i like to make it clear here. We have a security guard from 7PM to 7AM plus one night staff.
During day time, we have usually 3 members of staff in duty and security has never been an issue. Especially because the area is safe and active.
It is important to spot this point as we are very careful about the well being of our guest.

- On the other hand, you are right to spot that you have been able to check at 5am, that wifi is good and people friendly.

Thanks for your comment and hopefully see you around again

We booked a double bed private room with air-con based on the reviews on this website. We looked at a few other budget / hostel options but none looked particularly appealing and most had very poor ratings.

The bedroom we stayed in was very basic and a bit run down - the bed was uncomfortable and the pillows were also pretty bad. The sheet also didn't fit well and had cigarette burns. It was hard to sleep in in the mornings as the curtains (strips of fabric) didn't cover the windows adequately. The bathroom was a shower / toilet combination (fairly common in SE Asia), separated from the bedroom by a shower curtain. The bathroom was in worse repair than the bedroom and had grime all over the walls and fittings. The shower was also always cold (not sure when the hot water was on but it never was when we showered). The photos on their website must show their most pristine room because ours looked nothing like it. There was a sign above the toilet saying that toilet tissue shouldn't be flushed down the toilet yet we never had any offers to replace toilet paper in our room or empty our bin, even though we were staying there for three nights.

I guess the most baffling thing about this guest house is it's claim that it is a party place and a good place for planning your onward travel. The only people we saw staying there was one creepy old French guy, a bunch of local families, and a few younger guys who were only interested in visiting the pick up joints in the area. I don't think I would feel safe staying there as a solo female and definitely wouldn't party with the guys there. The main guy running the place was also not particularly helpful with enquiries, though I don't think this was necessarily his fault as he genuinely didn't seem to know the answers to our questions. The best place to go for tourist advice is the Department of Tourism next to Rizal Park - they can give you free maps on brochures about just about anywhere in the Philippines and answer any of your enquiries.

There is also no security on the door 24/7 as their website claims. The only people we saw who were consistently on the door were the girls and guys who worked at the Thai massage parlour downstairs - and I'm not sure if that's a good sign or not. As far as we could tell, the security guard was only on intermittently throughout the day and anyone could walk in off the street later at night / early in the morning.

In terms of the area (Ermita), it is nothing like the pristine streets of Makati, but it didn't feel particularly dangerous either. Sadly there are many families living in the street in the area and the local kids hang out on the 7/11 corner during the day. The main advantage of the location is that Robinson's Mall is just down the road and there are many drinking spots near by. The main tourist sites are also nearby. Keep in mind that the bars in this area are primarily filled with foreign men and Filipino women but a lot of them have great live music and the women are really friendly. Even though most of the bars are pick up joints we didn't find them particularly sleazy and the girls were just as welcoming to by boyfriend and I as anyone else. We went to G Point and Manilla Bay Club - both were fun and very interesting for people watching so long as you try and remain open and non-judgemental about certain clientèle there!

Unfortunately there is not much of a backpacking culture in Manila so Chill-Out Guesthouse is probably your best option if you're looking for a budget priced bed. However, if it's your first time in Manila or if you're travelling solo and you are willing to spend a bit more money, I would recommend looking at a hotel.

Room Tip: Stay in a private or go for a hotel

Dear Guests
First of all, we would like to apologise because we don't like people to feel uncomfortable in our place.
Unfortunately, neither my brother an i were here during your stay. We were kept busy somewhere else. Most of the time we manage to have at least one of us there but this time it was not possible.
I agree that my staff in not yet well trained to answer all your questions. They are mainly from Manila and never had the chance to travel, so it is hard for them to speak about destinations they don't know.
We always take time to seat with our guests to share all the good tips we have in this country and help them to plan the rest of their trip, this is part of the service, and unfortunately we haven't been able to offer it to you.
For the rest, the bed sheets have been changed, the curtains have been fixed and the rooms are actually under decoration to make them look better.
On the other hand, we have been traveling all around asia and we know that the cleanliness is very important. This is one of our main concern and it is absolutely abnormal that your room and bin haven't been cleaned during your stay.
The message have been passed to our staff so it will not happen again.
Regarding security, we have a guard from 7pm to 7 am everyday and during the day we always have 2 or 3 staff on duty. The area is very safe also so no problem of security what so ever.
We hope to have the chance to see you again so you can meet the real spirit of Chill Out Guesthouse.
May you enjoy the rest of your trip

I stayed in a dorm for three nights and payed 350 pesos per night. The chillout is a great place if you are on a budget. The separate rooms seemed spacious enough too, and probably of good value. The staff is great and helpfull. They also make simple breakfast for 100-150 pesos. There is a nice common area where to spend time and use the wifi. No issues with cleanliness.

The location is great if you want to put yourself to Ermita/Malate area. About 5 minutes to Ritzal Park, 1 min to Manila Bay shore, and less than 5 minutes to Robinsons Place shopping mall.

We arrived around midnight and the taxidriver had some problems to find the Chill out Hostel. After some searching we finally found it. It was already late but still there was somebody at the reception gave us some water and showed us the room. All in all the service was really friendly and the price for a night (650 for a double room with shared bathroom) was okay. There is no luxury it's just basic, but everything is clean and you can use a kitchen if you wanna prepare some meals for you. We can recommend that place. There is free Wifi as well.
