“Big and aircon only in room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 1, 2013

the location is right smack central and the street is not so busy. Just a walk away to the shopping center (robinsons) where I got my 3G SIM card and I like the grid streets at night. Going into the unit was like.... "I do not need so much space. I can pack easily 8 visitors in the unit." On downside, the aircon is only in the room. I am a very couch potato anyway so the cold air confined area is fine with me. Do go to Mr Poon restaurant just next door.

Room Tip: rooms at the end or at the open corridor will have cross winds through the unit.

Lots of people have recommended Tropicana for its value and convenient location. So I took the recommendation and booked in for 2 months. After all, it's within walking distance of office, Manila bay, hundreds of restaurants, and pratically across the street from supermarket and shops at Robinsons Plaza. It has a good pool, adequate Internet, and the rooms are large. It also has this amazingly fabulous Chinese restaurant, mr poon, next door. So imagine my disappointment on arrival, when I was taken to the top floor of the lift, and then had to walk up another flight, and taken to a room which needed a noisy pump to bring the water up, had a toilet that I had to manually adjust to get the water to refill, wobbly shower faucets, leaky and noisy old air conditioner that had to get replaced, dark even if you ahd all the lights on, a plug and best lighting at the dressing table where you could put your laptop but not a proper chair to sit on, a dining table that could be used for the laptop but no plug near by. For 12 days, I lived with it, but the neighbours is depressing, and I had my necklace ripped off me walking to work in the morning on the street recommended by reception who failed to inform me that I could have taken a Shuttle to the office. If you were in Manila for a short time, you could beat the value and the convenience, but I moved out, and I'm feeling relieved.

Very near the mall when you need something to buy. Also the staff are courteous and accommodating. The rooms are clean, though a bit aged. There are different types of rooms for those who wish to have kitchen facilities and others are just studio types. The room rates are reasonable compared to other 3star places. Best to book a reservation well ahead of your trip because the place is usually fully booked.

Hotel Name: Tropicana Apartment Hotel
Location: Manila Philippines - Ermita
Date of Stay: January 2012 (14 nights)

If you like the review please rate it as "helpful".

Overall Rating 3.5 out of 5

Location: 3.5
Room Quality: 3.5
Ambiance: 3
Facilities/Amenities: 3.5
Approach to Service: 4
Usability: 3
Value for Money: 3.5

Summary: The Tropicana is one of my long time favorites when staying in the Manila area; however it has its flaws. It is a good choice for budget oriented travelers who emphasize space, convenience and a home like feel. Those who want a modern environment or quiet surroundings may wish to consider elsewhere.

Detailed Commentary:

Positioning: An a apartment style hotel that seems particularly popular with local and korean tourists and anyone looking for a slightly longer stay.

Location 3.5
Ermita is not really the greatest area to stay in to start with. It is as gritty and urban as Manila gets with a lot of petty crime and some of the streets can be outright dangerous at night. However, if you are going to stay in the area it is a pretty good location as Ermita goes. It sits on a relatively calm side street and is less than a 5 minute walk to the very large Robinson's mall; which offers just about every type of shopping and dining experience you could want including a grocery supermarket. The Tropicana also sits roughly on the border of Melate and Ermita so you have easy access to both areas.

Room Quality 3.5/5:
The hotel is 9 stories with a lift that only reaches the eighth. I would give the studios a miss as they are dark and dingy but the one and two bedroom suites are quite huge and offer value. The downside of the rooms is that they are extremely dated and feel like they are 25+ years old. That said, they are well kept and clean. The bedroom has aircon but the rest of the unit does not. However both the bedroom and sitting area have large screened windows enabling a nice cross breeze The other downside is that ambient noise is quite high. The Hotel is shaped like a large "H" so if you stay near the lift corridor you will have people often quite noisily walking by your sitting room window . You can avoid this by staying in an end unit but you will lose a lot of wifi signal. For those wanting extra privacy you can consider the 9th floor but this will require climbing a flight of stairs. These rooms are a bit older and hotter but a fan is provided to help cool the room. The biggest noise issues concern factors beyond the control of the hotel. There is a construction site near the west wing of the hotel and although the building seem nearly completed, there was still a significant amount of noise going into the early hours of the morning, The East wing looks over smaller buildings and a school but unfortunately one of the buildings seems to contain a very loud rooster which would start crowing before sunrise every morning --- annoying enough that I was considering finding it to make my own chicken adobo. Now for the good part: The suites are very large. Each room is slightly different but typically feature a bedroom with large walk out balcony, bathroom, living room (Sofa, two chairs, Old style TV), Dining area and full size kitchen (electric Stove, water heater, Sink, Toaster oven, Full size refrigerator, Cupboards and cooking and eating utensils). Everything is very dated but works and has a very homey feel.

Ambiance 3
Ambiance is a mixed bag. There is little in the way of charm or decor but the sheer size of the place gives a feeling of openness and comfort.

Facilities and Amenities 3.5/5:

There is an outdoor pool but they are quite strict when it comes to enforcing health regulations on wearing swim gear only (no shorts or t-shirts). Free wi-fi is offered. Connectivity is good near the main corridor of each floor but rooms on either end suffer in terms of signal strength. There is also a small gym. The TV is old (No flat screens here) but the channel selection is generous with over 60 channels covering all genres.

Approach to Service 4/5:
No problems here as people were always friendly and the response was quick when the toilet refill malfunctioned.

Usability: 3/5
Usability concerns details that may not matter to many people, particularly those that are only staying for a night or two. However, since design and usability are of interest to me, I like to include it anyway. Some hotels maximize space with very intelligent room design while others pay no attention to usability and guest convenience. In this case I found the hotel average for it's class. This hotel was good in terms of basics like ample storage space and power points but it also had flaws. No TV in the bedroom and reading light is not great. In some of rooms the air-cons blow directly on the bed which I found quite uncomfortable. However the beds were light enough we could move it farther away from the aircon.

Value for Money 4/5 at discounted rates:
This is always subjective depending on what is important to most people. Convenience to Robinsons, large space, and a pool are the difference makers for this hotel. People emphasizing style, modernity, and quiet will not find value here.

I love the cozy ambience of this hotel. It's so homey and what's nice is that we can cook food at the hotel because it has complete amenities, a rice cooker and oven. It is also accessible to Robinsons Mall and St. Paul's Manila. It is quite near the airport and other important establishments. I will definitely recommend this to my friends who plan to stay in Manila.

I give five stars to this property as it delivered what I expected for a reasonable price. It would rank as a three-star hotel if it had a restaurant. Most of the rooms are apartment suites. I had a suite with a living room, bedroom, full kitchen (no microwave), and bathroom with shower only as is customary for hotels of this caliber in the Philippines. Everything which I encountered in the hotel worked properly and everything was immaculate. The room cleaner cleaned my room exactly when I asked and was delighted with a moderate tip. The front desk staff gladly let me use one of their office computers as the business center was under renovation.

The restaurant next door was not to my taste at all and was not inviting. However, there are over a dozen restaurants a five-minute walk away in Robinson's Mall where there is also a very large grocery store. The hotel has a nice roof deck from which I had a spectacular view of the magnificent New Year's Eve fireworks all over Manila. There is no elevator service above the eighth floor which means that a flight of stairs must be climbed to reach the deck and the ninth floor guest rooms. The two elevators to the other floors operated swiftly and were never crowded.

The living room was nicely furnished and the bed was firm. There were dozens of TV channels available, including many international ones. The only air conditioner is in the bedroom. During my stay the living room was never too hot. Air conditioning in the bathroom would be nice, but I realize that it is not usual in the Philippines.

My only complaint is that the very deep pool was too cold (probably cooler than 75 degrees F) for me to swim in, although some other guests did swim. I would suggest that the hotel needs a paint job on its back sides, especially those that overlook the pool. The hotel may be a bit difficult to find as its sign is at sidewalk level. It is on the left side of the street, halfway down its block as you head south.
