“fish market, nothing more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

Male is a very small town, about 2 square km, so nothing really much to see. We went to 'explore' Male as had a stop in Male of about 12 hours coming back from Kuramathi Island to Hong Kong. Thank you, Kuoni for that :(. The fish market is a fish market, it is sold all kind of fish, from small to big ones. It might be interested as some of the fish species sold there are not very common for the europeans.

“Amazing fishmonger scaling skills on display”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

Male fish market is a simple open air wet market, with loads of fishes lying on the ground for viewing. After spending 1 week scuba diving onboard a live-on-board (LOB), I finally understood why the menu has tuna for every meal. The tunas caught were amazingly huge! Some can be as long as ¾ my height and I’m easily 163 cm tall!

Though small, the expert scaling and washing of fish by the fishmongers made the place interesting. Basically, you pick and choose the fish from the ground (specific viewing area for different fishes), point, and the locals will get one of the many fishmongers to scale it. You can even pack fresh tuna and bring it home on the plane! The locals take on average less than 3 minutes to remove skin, remove inner organs, remove bone, and cut the fish up. If not for anything, it’s an eye opener!

PS: take note of the overfriendly locals trying to lead you the way. They meant no harm, their intentions were just to bring you to their souvenir shop. Can be annoying after a while tho!

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

Excellent choice of fish and the different vendors had a variety of selections to choose from. In addition, I would highly recommend the fruit and other goods that can be purchased from there.

“Not worth the visit”

Its what it says, fish market! Its very crowded and noisy. For Indians, its nothing new :) Though you see a lot of varieties of fish.

“Dirty place”

Well if you are travelling alone, and you are blonde (which is not specific to local people, than it might be a bit dangerous).
