“Nice hotel after a long journey”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

We spent the night at Hotel Octave in Male before transferring to our resort the next morning. After booking on Agoda, I tried contacting the hotel via email to confirm the reservation but never received a response. So after a long journey, when we were greeted on arrival at the airport by a representative of the hotel, it was a welcome sight. We were told that our resort had contacted the hotel and informed them what time we were to arrive back at the airport the next morning for our seaplane transfer and shown where we would check-in for the seaplane (the checkin desks are located next to the arrivals area of the international terminal). The representative then walked us to the ferry, purchased our tickets and told us there would be someone waiting on the other end. As promised there was and were taken to a car and driven all but five minutes to the hotel. Male is a safe city and even at 11pm the streets were abuzz with people.

On arrival we were given a welcome drink and checked in. Our bags were taken to the room before us. The room, while not large, was comfortable and spacious enough to accomodate a queen size bed, a small desk, a mounted flatscreen tv, and our three suitcases. Some complimentary bottle water was provided as well as basic bathroom amenities included. The airconditioner worked well, the wifi was free and provided reasonable speeds. We were able to skype using it, but streaming video may have been blocked. The bathroom was not luxurious with an open shower, but was clean and free or any odors with ample hot water.

Breakfast was provided the next morning and was very basic - think eggs, coffee, toast and sausage which passed more for a hot dog. Before transferring the next morning, I grabbed 2L bottle of Coke and a few snacks from the store across the street to take with us to the resort (as with almost any place in the Maldives you can pay in US $). The transfer to the airport was exactly the reverse process except we were upgraded to a speedboat for this journey.

Overall the hotel, which is owned by Impex, one of the largest tour operators in the Maldives, was a pleasant stay and a great option for a short stay in Male.

Room Tip: Don't expect much of a view from any of the rooms.

If you're only in Male for a day or two then this is the hotel for you. They offer a fantastic airport pickup that includes the cost of the ferry and the cab. When you arrive at the hotel, check-in is a breeze and you are shown to your room. Their delux room includes a full size bed, a flat screen TV, and a mini fridge. The bathroom is fine, with the shower in the corner with a drain on the tiled floor. I ate dinner at the hotel restaurant and was pleasantly surprised, although the prices were a little steep. The only negative thing about the hotel is the noise in the hallways. I was woken up repeaditidly during the night by people with no concern or consideration for other guests. At one point when I was woken up the power in the hotel went out and an emergency light in the room came on. Overall, this place is perfectly fine for a few days in male, although I don't know that this is where you would want to stay for an extended period of time.

Airport Meet and Greet and free transfer is a plus, for a hotel that is in this price range. Rooms are basic and clean, I was moved because they needed the twin I was in, and ended up in one of their suites, which came with a full kitchen and washing machine… would service as an ideal base.

I can’t fault what is on offer for the price.

Very good choice for one night staying before going to our resort. Very good pick-up service from/to airport and/or ferry. Very clean rooms and excellent service; the rooms are very quite even if the hotel is close to the main street

My sister and I stayed here overnight because we wanted to go to a grocery store and stock up on stuff before going to resort. Food was OK. Hotel very clean and once they knew what you were asking, they were very attentive. If your wanting to stay a night to see Male, don't! There is nothing to see. We walked the streets looking for a grocery store and you are definetly in a third world. The city is streets are filthy and the folks somewhat wary of foriegners. I felt safe just not welcomed.

Room Tip: This is a fairly new hotel. Any room is good. Make sure you get the airport transfers and breakfast...

Needed a place to stay as my flight got in a 10pm. Decided on Octave which was a good decision. Right from being picked up at airport, stay and being dropped back everything was good. Was greeted by Navelle who had a sign with my name on it, and escorted me to a ferry to Male main city (10min ride). On the other side was met by Ali who drove me to hotel. Check in was fast and was taken too my room. Room was clean, comfortable and quite. Bathroom was clean and shower had hot water and good pressure. Hussain dropped me of in the morning to ferry pier to go to seaplane terminal (where you go to get to various resorts).
Found the overall experience very good and would surely recommend. Great transit hotel before heading to resort if you need a place to stay at. One thing to note the staff are all friendly and very helpful and hotel is about 9 months old.

1. Nobody wishes to wake up and find a cockroach crawling across their bed, but in tropical countries these things happen. What was shocking was the management’s response: blank refusal either to apologise or to take our distress seriously. Perhaps not unrelatedly, the drains in the bathroom emit a nasty odour, which the hotel tries to disguise by burning lemongrass oil. Its only when you have had enough of that and blow it out, that the bathroom smell starts to fill the room.

2. Still, at least a cockroach would find the foam mattress comfortable. If you weigh any more you will not. Instead you will sink and spent a sleepless night feeling like you are in freefall. Why such cheap mattresses are used is beyond me.

3. One doesn’t expect, in a hotel of this cost, for the fittings to be falling apart. When it came to hanging our clothes in the cupboard, the whole structure came crashing down - the plastic holders where already broken and the bar had simply been balanced on top.

4. The hotel advertises free pickup, but our prearranged pickup from the ferry terminal failed to materialise. After waiting 30 mins we borrowed a phone and called them. They told us (again without apology) to get a taxi. They promised to pay for it, but did so only reluctantly on arrival.

5. The breakfast included in the room rate is very basic, the manager, explaining that a Maldivian breakfast takes too long to cook, agreed to provide us with one the next morning without charge. Needless to say, on checkout it was there on the bill.

6. If a central London gridlock at rushhour is your idea of fast, then you will be happy with the “high speed” internet; we couldn’t get a single page to open.

7. We asked for a cup of coffee from the excellent machine an hour before checking out to catch our flight. Unfortunately the manager did not seem to trust his staff enough to train any of them to use his beloved machine, and we had to wait 50 mins for him to come to operate it. A stressful waste of time.

8. A hotel which charges $100 per night but provides $40 quality. The staff are all really nice, and do their best to offset the problems all caused by poor management.
