We got into Male late so decided to stay the night at Male rather than waste a night in the more expensive resort. The Traders Hotel was very good. A smiling face welcomed us at the airport and it was a hassle free transfer to the hotel. We were quickly checked in and then in our very nice room. A buffet breakfast was included in the morning which was delicious before we were taken back to the airport for our transfer to the Lux resort in the Maldives.

We stayed at the Traders Hotel which is part of the Shangri la group for 2 nights in May 2013 following our 5 day stay at the Olhuveli Beach & Spa resort Maldives (which is reviewed by me separately).

Transfer
The representative met us at the airport very promptly by their stand (75) and escorted us to the speed boat where we received life jackets and bottles of water. The transfer to the hotel took less than 5 minutes. We embarked and then was escorted through an alley way to the hotel 3 minutes away. The luggage followed by car moments later.

Check-in/ reception
Was quick and effortless. The reception staffs spoke excellent English and were very welcoming. There is a coffee shop in the corner of the hotel and is appeared to attract a few business people conducting business affairs. The lobby didn't feel crowded and infact the smell of fresh coffee and lemongrass ( from the mini humidifier in the corner) was very pleasant.

Room
We chose to stay here because we wanted a 'sterile' environment before leaving for home. Yes the Olhuveli was amazing but our 4 year old has mild eczema and there were no baths in the deluxe villas and the shower room had ants and geckos and Mosquitos as one would expect on a island and we didn't want this to be the last impression we had of this wonderful place. Plus we were minutes from the airport so we didn't want tofeel the usual anxiety about getting to the airport and checking in sufficient time. We were allocated an executive suite (RM 0608) which was halfway up the hotel. It had a partial sea view if you stretched your neck out the balcony. I would have preferred a room higher up but I guess it's worth mentioning this when you book because I omitted to do this. The bed is a queen size bed with a firm mattress.
The room is just like the pictures, although in reality a bit narrow. Overall though, great provisions as you would expect - robes, kettles, iron, ironing board, torch, lint brush, alarm clock and safe. Virtually no noise from the bustle below.
Generally very little wear and tear and excellent decor throughout. The toilet is separate from the bathroom which was very spacious. The bath itself however, is about a third smaller than the standard UK bath. There are no bidet facilities in the toilet unlike most places in the Maldives. Air conditioning was quite and very effective. My only criticism is that carpet could do with a more vigorous vacuuming as there was hair embedded.

Wireless/WIFI
complimentary wifi was a huge plus given the extortionate costs on the islands. Pretty fast and consistent and much welcomed.

Balcony
Sufficient space for 2 chairs. Nice breeze as we were high up. Great opportunity to sit back and watch the hustle and bustle of Male.

Breakfast/Dinner
Ample selection. Ignore the negative comments in other reviews. Lots of flavoursome items to choose from including fresh coconut water. Buffet dinner also very tasty with more than 5 main dishes to choose from. Sat night is Maldivian night in the Lime restaurant so the curries are extra spicy! The staff are very friendly and approachable. Special mention to Shah for making us feel at home. The top floor restaurant has a nice buzz. Good place to smoke, enjoy a beverage and use the wifi. Watching the sun go down from this place was amazing.

Pool.
Looked inviting but didn't get round to using it. Looks exactly like the picture - but smaller in reality.

Shopping/gifts
Male has a range of shops but these cater mainly for the locals. There is a dozen or so gift shops about 7 minutes away where you can venture if you fancy getting rinsed of all your hard earned dollars! Basically come out of the Hotel, turn left, walk straight ahead, past the white government building which will be on your left, towards the main junction. When you hit the junction you should see a big neon "Sony" sign on the top of the building. There's shops all around this little area selling wooden carvings, large pieces of dead coral (looks like they was imported from china - I googled these as they didn't look authentic) usual key chains and nick nacks. However ridiculous prices $38 dollars for ashtrays, $56 for little wooden boxes, coral for $130. To be honest we didn't see anything that we hadn't already seen in Thailand or Dubai where they were a fraction of the price. Also remember that you may get stopped at the airport for trying to take coral home whether it is dead or alive even if the shop keeper does say it's ok!

Lots of cafes and pizzerias about. Didn't find any of the large fast food chains McDees, Starbucks or KFC etc. Male was buzzing at dusk when the temp was bearable. I wondered over to the fish market and it is it what it is - nothing more.

Overall the hotel did for us what we expected and we left on a bigger high and equally more refreshed. Getting on the plane home was a virtual blur as we were thoroughly relaxed and sad to go.
Thanks Traders. Hope to see you soon.

Room Tip: Request a room higher up if the view of the ocean is a must.

Stayed for 3 nights in May 2013 at this hotel.

Decent speedboat ride to the hotel for immediate check in and the room was clean except that the tile in #803 is scratched and looks / is dirty due to the abrasions.

The touch points I had with the team was generally good but whenever I wanted something delivered to the room like power adapter etc took some time.

The hotel is non smoking and if you need a room with a balcony, one has to cough up USD 50 at least per night.

The Buffet Breakfast was good, lots of choices from Chinese to Continental. Beware the bacon is beef!

Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Rooms ending with 03 could be a bit noisy, especially the lower floors due to the school near by.

Have stayed here before and am pleased to say, the high point of this hotel is the excellent welcoming staff. As always, they can advise on all things Maldivian . It's a handy base after a long haul flight and is on male, the capital island, a short comp speedboat away from airport island. There is alcohol in the many beach resorts, but not in the capital. The hotel can advise and arrange boat trips to several island resorts, note that Fridays and any religious days , that public beaches are exclusively for locals. Male isn't probably going to be your base for a holiday as its more business orientated, but its still an exotic starting point, with many local cheap eating options. The rooftop pool and bar area is lovely and the food is good. I like the varied breakfast choices too.

Room Tip: Choose larger room with open plan glass showers

Stayed here for a night since our flight arrived at 10pm in Male for our Maldivian grand vacation. We were greeted by a man with the hotel sign and showed us to the speedboat. A pleasant man but not sure if he understood me. It was a quick ride abt5 mins to the dock closest to the hotel. Then we had to walk towards the hotel passing a Thai restaurant and it smelled yummy! The reception was nice and quick. They also have wifi! The room was small but pretty cute. I love the glass showers! We also caked out the rooftop bar and pool since the cool night air was nice. We ordered drinks and forgot that alcohol is not allowed in the city! Yikes! A cold alcoholic drink would have been nice after a 20 hr flight to the country. We also walked to the nearest grocery to buy snacks for our next resort.

The reservation comes with breakfast and it was pretty decent. I can't complain.

The hotel arranged my transfer to our final destination so it was a breeze.

All in all its a pretty good choice.

Great staging point for your Maldevian getaway if your inbound flight lands late in the evening. Rather than pay $500-1000 for an extra night at your fav resort (I suspect that's only an option for closer resorts, may not even be an option for any that need a seaplane transfer) spend the first night in Male and do a whirlwind tour of the city before your transfer the next morning (just walk outside of the hotel in the morning and you'll find plenty of local guides who'll take you around; free in theory but buy something from their shops and give them a decent tip).

Hardly cheap (we paid about USD280 incl tax in early May) for what's honestly a 3-star hotel but then again, nothing is here, and it's likely a fraction of an extra night at your next resort. Unlike the resorts, this is a strictly DRY hotel (the bar serves mocktails and juices); I think the Hulhule is the only "wet" hotel in Male proper.

Certainly the hotel is well-versed in dealing with in/out visitors like ourselves (our resort had already called ahead to Traders to arrange for our pickup the next day) so it's pretty seamless.

First thing to consider in the Maldives is that lodging is just plain expensive for what you get. So lower your expectations based on price. For whatever reason, something that is listed as 4 star (along with price) is really more like a 3 star. That doesn't mean that it isn't still nice, just not equivalent to the price. That being said, the Trader's Hotel was very nice. We were met at the airport by a nice young man who escorted us to the boat for the short ride from the airport to Male and then to a car for the (unnecessary, but nice) 1 minute ride 2 blocks to the hotel. The hotel is in a great location with walking distance to anything (well in Male everything is in walking distance, but this was extra convenient). The front desk staff is extremely helpful and friendly - even providing me with super glue to fix my only pair of sunglasses before we left for our liveaboard. Our package included a tour of male. This is a walking tour (it is that small and traffic is that bad) that takes around an our. It was done by a really nice young man that spoke good english. He seemed willing to tell you as much or as little as you wanted to know and go really wherever you wanted to go. We ended up buying him a coffee on the waterfront and a place he liked to go and had a really nice time with him. Our rate also included a 3 course lunch in the rooftop restaurant. Again service was very nice. The rooftop restaurant isn't airconditioned and was quite hot. We weren't quite used to the heat yet (had just arrived) so it was a bit stifling. The meal was good. In the Maldives we did experience quite a few times where something that was on the menu wasn't available. I am sure this is due to everything having to be imported, so just keep that in mind and have a second option. The lobby has a nice little coffee shop as well. The rooms were nice and clean and modern. The previous complaints about enclosing the shower and providing privacy seem to have been addressed. The rainfall shower was wonderful and nice and hot. They provided shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and a box of toothbrush, etc. Robe and slippers too. Everything worked great - a/c, tv, coffee/tea, etc. They offered us an upgrade to a balcony view room for $60, but we weren't going to be in the room much anyway. The workout room was small but had new cardio equipment that overlooked the water - looked nice. Food in Male itself wasn't that expensive. No , it isn't as cheap as most south or southeast asia destinations, but typical for a resort island. Room was nice and quiet. The hotel also provided transportation back to the airport. All-in-all a very nice experience.
