“Wonderful Place”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

Like most places in Male, they're a nightmare to find - but this is well worth the search. A delightful establishment with a (dry) bar area out front, leading into a lovely small restaurant with probably 5 or 6 tables. It's run by a friendly German chap, and I think it's his (Balinese?) wife who does all the cooking - all of which is lovely. Great selection of dishes with varying amount of chili heat that's typical of Thai dining - something for everyone's taste.
The owner is more than happy to chat to his guests, as are the waiters - very friendly and attentive making for a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
All in all - well worth finding.

“Spicing up my life”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

I love oriental spicy food. Couldn't have it any better. Starters and main course just tingled my taste buds. Price, quality and service was right on s spot. Shall visit again, should I be in that part of the world.

“Worth the Walk”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

The Sala Thai ("Place of Rest") Restaurant is in the Sala Boutique hotel in Male, Maldives. I first learned of the restaurant through another TA review when I Googled "good restaurants in Male."
The directions on their website are clear, nevertheless we got thoroughly lost and ended up having to ask for directions a number of times, but the Sala Thai is famous, and we eventually found it.
Thomas Stahl, the owner (along with his Thai wife Liza), was sitting in the outdoor garden when we arrived, and we laughed together at our early dinner appearance. Living in Kuwait, we could understand the restaurant being almost entirely empty at 6:30 pm. Nevertheless, he seated us with a personable flourish, and proceeded to help us review the extensive menu.
He is justifiably proud of the restaurant's success and reputation, and he spends a great deal of time ensuring that the ingredients for his kitchens are authentically Thai, prepared by a Thai, and served in the proper Thai tradition. Thomas is funny, self-effacing, and a fount of information about Male and the Maldives.
We ordered his signature soup, chicken & beef satay, and a beef dish I have unfortunately neglected to write down and can't remember. Given the satisfaction of our fellow diners with their choices, I think it's safe to say, "Feel free to order anything on the menu, it's all good."
Food is serious business for Thomas, and we overheard several discussions with other patrons about ingredients, the merits of this chili over that chili, and an especially funny lesson on how to eat with your hands. (This is apparently necessary for the full Thai food experience).
The meal was not cheap at $77US for two (no alcohol), but it was also beyond excellent.

“flavours ok, bit of a rip off though”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

the flavours were good, but 8USD for rice and 7USD for water left a bad taste in my mouth that the curry didn't cover up. service was rather odd

Very tasty authentic Thai food. Portions are huge. The pad thai was the best I have ever had. The juice were freshly squeezed and superb.
