“Exactly what you'd expect of a City 5 star hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 1, 2009

We stayed at the Shangri-La in May 2003 and again in October 2005 (apologies for the delay in the review). We stayed in standard rooms each time. If you're bothered about the views, these can be a bit hit and miss, but this is what you'd expect in a city centre hotel. Both the rooms and the amenities at the hotel are of a very high standard. We found the concierge service particularly helpful. There's a decent range of food outlets with prices consistent with hotels of this standard. The hotel is in an excellent location, within easy walking distance of both KL CC and the KL Tower. The hotel was very well priced for what you get. If we had a bigger budget we might try the Mandarin Oriental, but the service at the Shang has been of such consistenty high a standard that we would not hesitate to return there or recommend it to others.

We stayed at this hotel for two days on our way back from a magical holiday to Sabah and Langkawi. We are not city people but I'm so glad our travel agent suggested this. It broke up the flight and thashopping is amazing!! My teenage daughter is already planning her next trip to floor two of the Petronis Towers shopping complex where Jimmy Choo, Chanel, Tiffany, Versace etc etc all share space together. There are I think it's five other floors with something for everyone!! We missed tickets to do the Sky Walk so get up early if you want them. We went to the top of the KL Tower and the view was amazing.
Back to the hotel - If you're upgraded to Club Horizon then like us you'll be in heaven!!
Rooms on the top floors spacious and with everything you could want. Fresh fruit, chocolates and a (melting) sugar and gold leaf creation delivered to your room on arrival.
Advantages of Club Horizon are (apart from a better view!) you can eat breakfast in the private lounge or in the normal breakfat restaurant. From 11am until I think it's 3pm free refreshments and cake are on offer. From 3pm until 5pm afternoon tea is served yummy sandwiches savouries and cakes and again any soft drinks you want. From 5pm until 7pm is cocktails. But it's not just cocktails you can drink wine, spirits, beer soft drinks. All I can say is thank goodness we only stayed two nights here. Otherwise a detox programme in the Priory would be next on the list!!
Thanks to the Shangri La for a fabulous two days - the staff are as everywhere in Malaysia exceptional!!

Second time we stayed at the Shangri-la - the first was three years ago. We were in a Horizon club room, but since the top floors are being refurbished, this was lower than previously. Very nice room regardless. Only one negative point was that the lifts were near the room and pretty noisy. Loved the shower and bath.

The new Horizon club lounge was okay - decent food, too many kids around for my liking.
Free internet available in the business centre was a plus (Grand Hyatt in Bali charged a huge amount for this). We ate at twice at the hotel, in the Shang (chinese food) and once in the Japanese (name escapes me) - both were brilliant.

The road in front of the Shangri-la does get ridiculously busy during rush hour, so if you venture out, you may find difficulty in getting a taxi back during the evening rush hour. Slight inconvenience, but definitely worth putting up with. This is probably my favourite hotel, overall.

Stayed for 4 nights. Good sized rooms with excellent facilities. Hotel staff really helpful and services great - room service brings its own table and we highly recommend high tea in the lounge.

We stayed for 3 nights and had 2 x rooms on the 14th floor (deluxe rooms), one had a fab view of the Petronas Towers (the children!) and if we craned our necks we could see the KL Tower. Service was absolutely impeccable with regard to the restaurants and lobby, checking in (we actually had access to our rooms as early as 10am), concierge and room servicing. The rooms were immaculate and exceptionally well equipped with everything you could require and the turn down service was excellent - I love the way that the Shangri-La puts your slippers out on a linen cloth! The hotel pool and tennis court is in good condition and the staff at the pool bar look after you very well, towels are provided. There is a small gym (one of each type of equipment you usually see) and a small spa (my husband had a 'therapeutic' treatment - mmm, which he said was very beneficial!) My only niggle (and it is a small one) is that we felt that the food in the chinese restaurant was somewhat mediocre - it certainly did not live upto its' reputation - we ate just as well in China Town one evening. For us The Shangri-La hotels are by far and away the best of all the chain hotels simply because you can rely on their superb service regardless of where you are in the world!

I steyaed here 4 years ago before the room renovation and the service and our stay were great, it was one of my favourite hotels. This time was completely different story.
Rooms are renovated but they are small. We had executive room ( the level above deluxe rooms ) and the bathroom compare to Sheraton Imperial is really small, also the room is small, space for one chair . The room wasn't very clean, socket hanging from the wall, not fixed after our phone call, requested a room looking over the street, given back room looking over a noisy generator.
The breakfast was one of the best, it is still very good but the food is not as fresh as before. The location is ok but not the best, 2 stops from Bukit Bintang.
The biggest problem is the service, they simply didn't care during our stay.
The positive is the nice swimming pool ,free internet and very good room service, quality food. No Chi Spa here. The lobby is still great.
I will not stay again at Shangri La Kuala Lumpur. I still like Shangri La hotels but after 2 negative stays I hope their service improves.

We stayed at the KL Shangri-La for 2 nights coming from Bali and we had the most fabulous stay. We had prebooked a hotel limo and were glad we had. We were met at arrivals, given plenty of information about the journey etc and then escorted to the car. It was a treat to sit back and just relax. We were greeted well on arrival, the doormen were lovely - as was everyone really. The transfer wasn't cheap but if you want a bit of luxury worth it for £58. The driver was very careful and so nice telling us about KL.

Check in staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was newly renovated and just stunning, deep reds, dark wood and one of the best bathrooms ever! We even had a view of the Petronas Towers from the 9th floor. Much more than we had expected. The room was spotless, spacious and had a very comfortable bed. Fruit and a newspaper left daily. The turndown service was a nice touch, also filling the ice bucket for us.

We went to the hotel lounge after having dinner out at Enak at Starhill Gallery. If you want somewhere special with Malaysian food go there as it is a fabulous restaurant. The band in the lounge were very good and the drinks were excellent. A good sized cocktail and a spirit came to about £16 depending on what you had. Considering the surroundings, service and entertainment that was good value.

Next morming we checked out the facilities. The swimming pool was so refreshing, a good size and depth. It had views of both the KL and Petronas towers and also had a pool bar. We ordered two fresh fruit juices which were very big and that came to around £11. They also have a large well equipped gym plus a separate male and female sauna, steam and massive jaccuzi. We didn't use those but they looked good.

We had a dim sum lunch in the Shang Palace and the food and service was impeccable. We were told that as well as the a la carte menu we could have the all you can eat option which enables you to order things you may not order normally. One thing though, if the food is left you may get charged a nominal ammount for it. I guess this is to avoid a lot of waste which is fair enough. I think this option is only offered on Friday and Saturday lunchtimes. A substantial varied lunch came to £29 including jasmin tea and no other drinks, you don't really need them. We turned up at the restaurant not expecting it to be busy and were told it was full and to come back in about 15 minutes. We wandered off to look at the gardens and after about 8 minutes or so the girl at the restaurant came looking for us to say that there was a table available for us. That was a lovely touch. This restaurant is definately worth a visit, we enjoyed it and will book next time.

KL itself was interesting, although we weren't there long we had a chance to look around the Klcc area, the Petronas towers and Central Market which was colourful. We had dinner at Ginger restaurant in Central Market. A mixture of Thai/Malay food. 3 mains with rice, desserts and soft drinks came to around £25. Excellent value and extremely good too.

We enjoyed our stay at the Shangri La. It was a luxurious hotel and you felt well looked after. Everyone greeted you and were very friendly. Room service was efficient and quick and all of our needs were met. The hotel was impressive and looked beautiful and we will stay there again when we next visit KL.
