The service staff work really hard to please -- but overall, the experience in this hotel wasn't terrific. Our room faced the main road, and we bore the brunt of the buzzing street.

The room itself was large and plain. There was nothing in the room that stood out; the kind of hotel you'd be quick to forget. The bed was soft, but sagged in the middle.

Overall, the place just needs a little personality.

We stayed for 5 nights on our way to Hong Kong in Aug 09. We got a very good offer from Expedia but were not very sure because the price was considerably lower than others and some reviews were not ideal. However, we decided to give it a go because of the location (right opposite the station Raja Chulan). It was definitely worth visiting - room was clean (although toilet was considered as 3-star) but spacious and new carpet laid. Breakfast a lot better than we expected for the price paid - it is even better than some 4-star hotel's. Most people we met are friendly and helpful - no compaints but compliments surely. If I have to find one thing to comment, one staff at the reception told us we needed to pay for the internet connection during the stay, but two others said the charge is included in the room package. So we were slightly confused at one point, although no charges were made on our bill when we checked out. Location is fantastic, if you can stand the heat, you can walk to Twin Towers in 25 mins, and KL Tower in 20 mins. It's also 10 mins away from Times Square and shopping centres. Would definitely recommend.

For once tripadviser let me down...this hotel is filthy and quite a distance from being 5 star. It is not even 2 star in my opinion. It is tired, shabby and grubby and I would not recommend it to anyone. I have attached a selection of photos to illustrate - I pasted 2 together so I could post a good selection of them. The bathrooms haven't had a good clean in years, the tiles are cracked and grubby, mold everywhere, disgusting unhygenic dirt encrusted light switches - just appalling. I am amazed at the positive reviews!! Are we talking about the same hotel??? Our carpet was not hoovered once in 3 days and there was debris on the floor from previous occupants when we checked in. The sheets were stained, the bathrobes were stained, the slippers were recycled from previous occupants and had offensive hairs attached (UCK!!!) the towels were threadbare and the pillows smelled so badly of damp that we had to throw them out of the bed.

We attempted to report the problem to reception but were challenged by a rude & unprofessional member of staff called Raj who refused to accept what we were saying and refused to accompany us to the room to inspect it!! Nor would he move us to a different room as he said the hotel was full.

Breakfast was a howl! They couldn't cope with the crowd and we had to share large group tables with strangers - outside, under a marquee, outside the main dining room area!!! The quality of the food was absolutely fine though, good choice and the staff were helpful.

All in all a dirty, shabby old hotel that badly needs renovating and a good spray of cillit bang. There is no point doing up the bedrooms and not doing the bathrooms, and they urgently need to hoover and clean. The lobby looks impressive in an old fashioned sea of marble kind of way but trust me it doesn't continue through.

Location is good - close to Sungei Wei Plaza with great tailors (Diana Boutique & Tux and Blazer) and a few other good shopping centres with Guess/Nine West etc.

I booked through a travel agent as part of a package so don't know how much it cost but honestly you couldn't pay me to stay there again! There are other hotels offering the same rates that will deliver on standard and service. STAY AWAY!!!

We had to wait for 1,5 hour to check-in. Staff at reception seemed inexperienced and confused, we got help from about 5-7 different people at check-in.
The outside of the hotel and the lobby is very nice and look like a 5-star hotel but the rooms absolutely do not.
The rooms are big and were problably 5-star standard 15 years ago but not anymore.
Sheets were old with stains and some with holes in them. The room was not properly cleaned- you could see the same dirt lying on the floor during the entire stay so they cannot have used the vacuum cleaner much. Bathroom is big but old and not clean.
Breakfeast was excellent, many things to choose from.
Location of the hotel was very good.
Staff were friendly.
Although there were quite a lot to remark on we did not really expect the hotel to live up to its 5-star status as the price was much lower compared to other 5-star hotels and therefore it was quite ok anyway,

Booked a three day stay in a Club Room over the internet - excellent price with hotels.com. Arrived late in the evening and escorted straight to the Club Lounge for check-in. Everything explained clearly by Nantha (thank you!) and taken to our room. I had emailed the hotel direct three weeks earlier and asked for a room with a view of the Petronis Towers and there they were right outside the window, a beautiful uninterrupted view from the 20th floor! The room was spacious, very clean with all promised amenities - the bathroom was large with a double sink arrangement, 3/4 bath, large shower and separate toilet. The Club Room breakfast was more than expected with a great choice of cold items and a chef who prepared eggs (any way you like), sausage, bacon, tomatoes and hash browns. The Cocktail Hour (well, two hours actually between 5.30 and 7.30pm daily) was a great touch - beer, soft drinks, spirits and wine (red and white) available and, most unexpectedly, a varied selection of snacks, some hot, some cold. As we had to leave early on the last morning we were able to check out the night before (up to 11pm in the Club Lounge) saving us time the following day. A hotel taxi to the airport is RG135 (approx £25 OR US$38) and takes up to one hour depending on the time of day. The only downside was the astronomical price of drinks in the downstairs bar/lounge areas - however that is commonplace in KL so not just in this hotel.
My travellers tips:
Book a Club Room at the Istana Hotel not only for the view but for the "extras" that come with it and the excellent service.
Look out in the city for Happy Hours and Two-for-One offers on alcoholic drinks.
If you intend doing a lot of sightseeing it could be worth using the Hop-on Hop-off bus (22 stops around the city for RG38 pp - around £7 or US$11)

We were very disappointed that on arrival, well after the set check in time we had to wait another hour or so for our room. We were very tired from our flight and didn't expect to be kept waiting.

We were given a room on a lower floor which was outdated, carpets were worn. The rooms are large which is always a plus. We had booked a deluxe room but were sure we were initially given a superior room, however there website doesn't make the differences clear.

We upgraded for one night to the club floor which included breakfast. The breakfast was great and couldn't be faulted for choice. However, I would suggest you don't eat in the buffet restaurant later at night as a lot of food looks dry. The club room also provided a good range of drinks and internet access was great. We had also been given a better room on the club floor and the next two nights were moved into a higher floor room which was their deluxe rooms. I proved a big difference between a three star class to four star.

The staff are very good, friendly and helpful.

I would not stay here again, unless it was in a club room but it is value for money.
