“Dated, but inexpensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012

This inexpensive hotel is looking very tired. Carpets are worn and stained in places. Rooms have the appearance of not having been modernised since the mid 1990s. Bathrooms dated with some cracked tiles, but very good showers. All very clean however and good beds (probably newer than much of the surroundings)
Against its tired appearance, it is in a good central location and easy to reach by public transport.
A pretty good breakfast buffet is laid on and if you pay for a club room, you have access to a lounge serving complimentary snacks and alcoholic drinks. Well laid out central lobby bar. Live music put on each night makes conversation difficulty, but will appeal to those who like that sort of thing.
Free and reliable wifi in central lobby and club lounge. Not in rooms (unless you are able to pick it up from either of those locations)
Good outdoor swimming pool. Quite well laid out gym, although changing rooms reminded me of being back at school. Good steam room, sauna suffers from being a bit too big for the size oven provided. I suppose though that life in KL at this time of the year is one giant steam bath!

Positive; great central location and good breakfast with plenty of choices.

Negative: all the fridge not working. Had a conference so went to several rooms. Unluckily had a blackout that night. Unfriendly check in ( to locals only- how double standard).

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Istana very much. The staff were excellent as were the facilities, and the restaurant is of a very high standard. Its location close to the monorail station proved very useful for us. There were however some minor irritants. The lack of WiFi facilities in the room was annoying as we were relying on web based applications to communicate with our family at home. This was exacerbated to some extent by the slowness of the elevators, we were on the 15th floor and it took on average about 5 mins to reach the lobby. On one evening there seemed to be only one elevator operating and each time it reached our floor it was too full for us to enter. The pool is excellent however we felt a little uncomfortable having to cross the lobby whenever we wanted to use it.
As stated though these things were minor irritants only and the overall stay was very pleasant and I would highly recommend this hotel.

On arrival we were upgrade to club room which included free afternoon tea/coffee food etc very impressed. Location v good near towers, malls. Don't listen to other reviews about this being old & dated some people just want too much. I only had one negative and this was out of line, the exchange was 4.70 to the English pound & the staff member tried to short change me & said the rate advertised was wrong i picked him up on this & he panicked, go into town firca good rate. Overall though v impressed. Thank you. Matt

We recently stayed 4 nights at the Istana. I chose this Hotel mainly due to the most reasonable rates, especially for a club room. TA has some mixed reviews so we were not sure what to expect, but we ended up having one of our best ever hotel stays!
As other reviewers have pointed out, the Istana is getting a little worse for wear and tear; but this is more than made up for with the attentive staff, in particular the head waiter in the Club Lounge, Biplob. This chap made our visit a delight, with nothing too much trouble. I have never stayed in any Hotel that offers drinks and food from the Lounge at closing time, but every night Biplob insisted we take something back to our room. He did this to every guest. Remarkable.
Our room was good, with large heavy drapes that enabled a decent sleep in, and plenty of hot water, strong in pressure ( 18th floor).
We were only a 5 minute stroll to BB Plaza and the Bukit Bintang walk, where in 15-20mins KLCC was awaiting. As it was a Monday, the towers were closed so we walked to the Menara Tower. Great views, and the 6D Rollercoaster was a buzz!
Our only mistake was flying into the LCCT. Arrival was chaotic, and the toilets were a disgrace. So too was the Air Asia (Sky Bus) bus terminal in Sentral; hundreds of people crowded underground in stifling heat, and us dragging large suitcases.... reminded me of the Phillipines 20 years ago.
We took a cab back; much better and oddly the Departure terminal was a lot better than Arrivals.
And I must say Air Asia was spot on, on time and very professional.
All in all we had a great trip to KL and will most definately return. Thank you Hotel Istana!

Room Tip: The Club rooms are by far best

We have recently come back from staying at this hotel. Room was in need of decoration and deep cleaning. GIA at the reception desk was very helpful - so why did i give this a 1 circle.
The hotel had some electrical maintenance which was scheduled for night of 15th September. Some guests weren't told at all others like us had a note put on our beds between 3pm and 7.45pm in the evening of 15th September. Work was scheduled from midnight to 8am. There was no aircon, and our rooms were dark one small light at the entrance to the room with no power in the room. As we were leaving at 6.30am in the morning we couldn't see to pack properly and in fact it was dangerous because we were likely to fall over room furniture. the hotel lied to other guests and were still accepting bookings during the day. There was a confrontation between hotel staff and about 40 very angry guests in the hotel lobby at 1am in the morning. The hotel supplied us with a torch so that we could pack our things at 3am in the morning - we were leaving at 6.30 am
Only one lift was working during this time and this lift was shrouded in darkness as a fuse had blown so anybody suffering from claustrophobia would have had a problem( it got fixed eventually because i pressed the alarm button in mistake for the lobby button in the lift as i couldn't see.) Now pursuing Agoda the ticketing agent for a refund of charges as the hotel said they couldn't refund directly as we had booked through Agoda.
We have stayed in this hotel before but never again and certainly it really isn't a one star experience in spite of the rating being 5 stars

Room Tip: this is truly the last place you would want to spend time

Very happy with our experience. Stayed on club lounge level. Staff were very accomodating and great with kids. Rooms were very good. As a family of 4 we had 2 adjoining rooms (which was actually 3 rooms) which gave us plenty of space. Beds comfortable and room well maintained. Location was great but the staff really made our stay.

Room Tip: Definately stay in the Club Lounge
