Hotel Istana
Ranked #23 of 349 Hotels in Kuala Lumpur
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 11, 2011

I stayed in 1616 (twin room) for 3 nights

Pros:
Friendly and helpful English-speaking staff. Smart uniforms.
Numerous fast lifts to rooms and facilities.
Large lobby with huge Songket Lounge.
Large twin room with bedside cabinet, circular table and lounge chair & footstool, writing desk & upright chair, multi-channel TV (including BBC World News, Star Movies, ESPN, Star Sports), two sliding fitted wardrobes with hanging/shelf storage, tea/coffee making facilities, electronic safe, iron/ironing board, fridge, ensuite with power shower, bath, twin sinks, toilet. Views down to hotel pool and across city, although not of the Petronas Twin Towers from my room. Electronic keycard door entry. Quiet and effective fitted air-con unit. Adequately soundproofed walls and double-glazing. Effective blackout curtains. Detailed hotel information pack which includes places of interest such as Chinatown, Islamic Arts Museum, Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur Tower.
Large open plan breakfast area (Taman Sari Brasserie, Lobby Level, 6:30am-10:30am) with a wide range of hot and cold food & drink . Plentiful seating. Waiter served tea/coffee.
Large 1,600 square Fitness Centre (press B1 in East Wing elevator) with weight and cardio equipment. Open: Mon-Fri 6am-10pm and Sat-Sun 6:30am-7pm.
Business Centre (Lobby Level) with four desktop PCs and printer and newspapers.

Cons:
Expensive Internet whether via WiFi, or the desktop PCs in the Business Centre.
Murky looking outdoor pool - open daily 7am-8:30pm.
Tennis courts out of use.

Tip: 'KL Hop-on Hop-off City Tour'. www.myhoponhopoff.com . To access nearest stop (No.6) from hotel, turn right out of hotel, head towards Bintang area and look for Lot10 shopping mall, then Piccolo Hotel, No.6 located at kerbside. A double-decker bus leaves every 30 minutes, but unfortunately out bus hadn't arrived after an hour so we got a taxi to our destination. It's 2.5hrs for the while circular tour. RM38 per person.

Tip: Turn right out of the hotel entrance then across the road for the Pavilion shopping mall.

Tip: I found it difficult to get anywhere in KL on foot and impossible by monorail, so frequently used taxis. It cost RM10 for a daytime taxi to the Petronas Twin Towers from the hotel, although I've walked it as well.

Tip: Petronas Twin Towers - I bought 2 tickets for myself and my friend via Nash (a young college student):  http://www.klccvisitingticket.yolasite.com . He queued for us, as it's recommended to queue from 6am onwards each morning, and he  delivered the skybridge/observation deck tickets to our hotel lobby at 9:30am for a 11:15am entry. We paid him on delivery. All tickets sold out, so it was worth paying him to queue. The complex also contains a concert hall (Dewan Filharmonik Petronas), shopping mall (Suria KLCC) and several restaurants.

hotel well located near petronas towers and easily accesible with metro. room was a little dated with no working fridge or safe. The beds were comfortable and it was clean except for burn marks from an iron on the floor. There was no wifi in room and plugs were difficlt to reach. would be lovely if the rooms were refurbished.

The service was great and it looks very nice in the foyer and from outside. However it is clearly a dated hotel. Our bathroom was not in good condition. Leaking toilet and shower. The shower recess was very old and in some parts mouldy. Not very appealing. The breakfast as part of the club room access was good despite small selection to choose from. House keeping was lacking in terms of replacing towels, amenities etc.

Service is okay at check in and the rooms are tired. Nevertheless, great location and comfortable.

My wife and I spent three nights at the Hotel Instana. Initially, we were quite impressed because the location is great and the lobby is impressive. However, a few hours in the hotel suggest that the Hotel Instana is certainly not a luxury site. The shower leaked into the bathroom because the shower door would not seal complete. In addition, we noted some mold on the shower wall. The more major disappointment, however, was that the pool with the deep mossy green water was closed, and thus there were no opportunities to laze around the pool.

Stayed at Istana for 3 nights with the family.

The hotel is very well spec'ed but the maintenance seems a bit off. Rooms are spacious and our room on the 16th floor had a spectacular view of the Twin Towers.

The buffet breakfast has an excellent variety and has some delicious dishes. Staff are also very courteous and helpful.

Overall, definitely a hotel I'd recommend to families as well as business travellers looking to stay around Jalan Bukit Bintang.
