Orange Pekoe Guesthouse
Ranked #9 of 349 Kuala Lumpur B&B and Inns
Reviewed March 3, 2014

For the price you pay, this guest house really cannot be faulted. It's extremely well located and the rooms are clean, neat and tidy. This was our 2nd stay here so we knew what to expect. The shower in the en-suite wasn't in a separate cubicle so everything gets wet when you take a shower, this was fine for us but if you were staying for more than 2/3 nights or weren't used to budget accommodation you might not find this ideal. All in all this place really is worth visiting if you're budget conscious but still want a well located, clean, cosy and friendly place to stay in KL.

Very good location, easy to visit all the nice places in Bukit Bintang and beyond. 2 min walk to Jalan Alor and Changkat Bukit Bintang, with only cafes and clubs, but far enough not to hear the noise. Close to public transport. Rooms a bit small and a small bathroom, but good enough. I‘m personally not a big fan of a shower above the toilet but most hostels have them and it's not a big problem. People very friendly and helpful and they have the cutest living room. The room rates are not to high either and since we really like the neighbourhood, we would definitely stay here again.

Really good. Very confortable, clean and not expensive. It's like being at home, you prepares your own breakfast with cereal, milk, coffe, bread and a awesome jam!
It has very good location, close to the free bus station and from there you could visit every important spot. It's sourrended by good and inexpensive restaurants. I dont have any complain for this guesthouse. Well done!

Room Tip: Try to book in the second floor, they don't have elevator.

This place is homey and comfy and the staff is extremely friendly. We found that KL in general didn't have the same standards as other countries in budget accommodation. This place was very clean and quite spacious. Only problem was that there was no tv, no fridge and no toiletries (apart from towels and shower gel; no toothbrushes, toothpastes or shampoo/conditioner). Make sure not to get a room on the top level as there are no lifts and you may also hear animals running around in the roof. They woke us up a few times during the night. Also, we do not recommend the tour to malacca which can be booked through the guesthouse (provided by han travel). The driver walked us down the street and explained briefly what each building was (he was not a proper tour guide and did not provide any background info or historical facts and figures), which can be just read from the sign boards, then left us to explore on our own. We were only allowed 2 hours, of which 1 hour was spent having lunch. Not at all worth $198ringgit. Would have been better if we caught the bus ourselves.

Dear Winnyl, thank you for your review. As you know, our place is a friendly, simple and clean budget accommodation in very central location. So it's all 'no frills' but decent. If you look for TV, fridge and other amenities in your room, you would have to book a hotel. Guesthouses like ours which are basically a B&B, usually do not provide these things. We are going to keep it this way because all these extras would mean that we would no longer be in a position to offer our rooms at the same rates as we currently do. We believe that after all this approach serves our guests from all over the world in the best possible way. Cheers, your OP Team :-)

We found that Malaysia doesn't really offer the same standard of budget accommodation offered elsewhere in SE Asia, so as far as standards in this country go, Orange Pekoe was pretty good. The highlight was the staff, who were very friendly and helpful - before we even arrived at the hotel we had to call them as our incredibly aggressive taxi driver from the train station didn't know where he was going, but the lady at the other end was so patient and helpful (despite how rude he was to her). When we arrived she gave us loads of helpful info about the area, transport options etc. Second big plus point of this place would be the location, easy walking distance to shops and restaurants (inside the shopping malls), the Petronas towers (via the skyway), and we (two females) felt safe walking at night, The self serve breakfast was nice too, and generally the communal areas were very cosy. The rooms were adequate, nothing to rave about but spacious, clean & comfortable, the only downsides being that they were a bit dark and smelt very heavily of bug spray! The wifi worked well in the room too. This is a very good budget place.

Our expectations were clearly too high after the good comments we read here. On the positive side, the price is cheap and the beds are really comfortable. No bed bugs. Air con works. It is very close to the monorail and places of interest can easily be reached. Great restaurants and restaurants just around the corner.
On the negative side: not everyone will feel safe just outside the hotel. The eares looks really run down. But just one street away in each direction, it is different. The rooms are tiny and the shower right in top of the toilet. We stayed for three bights snd our room was not cleaned once, nor did we get fresh towels (or toilet paper). We were very unlucky, since during the three days, we didn't really have water. There was usually a bit if water in the morning, but when we came back from sightseeing in the late afternoon, we didn't have any water until the next morning. This is not the hotels fault. However, there was no water whdn we checked in. The guy at the reception could have informed us, but he didn't. Clearly, the bathroom was not cleaned and had stains all over the floor and eests of soap from the guests before us on the glass above the sink. The staff didn't bother telling us or cleaning the room when there was water the next morning.

Also, we were there during chinese new year and there was a karaoke party going on on the street in front of the hotel. The walls are so thin, it's like they don't exist. We didn't sleep that night.

The hotel is a good deal for backpackers or travellers on a tight budget. Due to our bad experience there, we would stay at a different hotel during our next visit.

Dear Nischu, thank you for giving us your feedback here. We are sorry to hear that your stay with us fell on the date when all KL experienced a disruption of water supply. We tried our best to make everybody feel comfortable in this situation but of course there was only that much we could do. As for the poor performance of housekeeping that you mention in your report: we talked to our reliable cleaners who have been with us for several years and who have performed VERY well. They say that it could be that due to the confusion caused by the water problem one of them forgot to change a towel one day. However, 'no cleaning and no fresh towel over several days' was very unlikely. Based on our own experience we tend to agree without being able to verify either statement. In any case, we invite you to stay with us next time you are In KL so that you can experience our feel-good-accommodation under normal circumstances. Best, your OP Team

We stayed here for 3 nights. The guesthouse is nearby monorail Raja Chula, free Go Kl busses. Only one minor room didnt had a window, but we were there only for sleeping, it didnt bother me;) I used the stay.com for offline map, was very handy. If arrive at kl international sirport, take the kl express (35rm), its about 30 min to sentral, then you have to take the monorail, you go downstair (follow monorail signs), at yhe traffic lights you cross over and go right, after 200 meter is the monorailstation, on your left. when The monorail was closed when we arrived at 23.30 pm. when you arrive early you can buy token with touchscreen, press the station raja chula. its about 1 or 2 ringit.
