KL sorely lacks good five star hotels so I was delighted to try out the Villa Samadhi which has been open almost two years now. Part of the Relais et Chateaux group of hotels, it is located behind the US Embassy about ten minutes from the central business district. The hotel has 24 rooms and is a traditional styled structure with lots of concrete and reclaimed wood.
My room was quite large with a nice bathroom. The restaurant on site is very good for breakfast, lunch or dinner (please note that it opens at 8am unless you ask them ahead of time to open a little early). There is a pool in the compound although it is not really designed to swim laps. There is no health club. I suggested that they at least provide yoga mats in each room.
A charming hotel yet it is quirky. First, it seemed a little understaffed. One night we went up to the cosy roof top bar but there was no bartender. We grabbed beers out of the refrigerator and wrote down what we consumed on the honor system. The first morning, I had trouble getting the TV to work, so at 6:45am I went downstairs but there was no one on duty until 8am.
The whole experience reminded me of borrowing your best friend's luxury ski lodge for weekend. It was a beautiful place, but it took a while to figure out the whole place works.

Tucked within an upscale locale just 10 minutes drive from town, Villa Samadhi becomes an immediately accessible respite to restore soul into one’s exhausted self. Its collection of 21 contemporary Asian-inspired rooms, with each spanning from 600 square-foot to over 2000 square-feet of living spaces are accented with a collage of elements to create a raw yet sophisticated Asian dwelling. Discreetly recede from street view, the most distinguishing feature of Villa Samadhi is the massive, soaring grass thatched-roof that shouts 'Malaysia'. But most eye-catching is the mysterious-looking multi-layered thatched roof structure of the rooftop bar-lounge ‘Bumbung’ which is floating above all else.
