We arrived here after a long bus journey that dropped us off in the middle of the night, it was the only hotel nearby with 24 hr reception. Room was 33rm with a fan, which was cheap but we didn't realize there was an even cheaper option until reading a review! Hotel staff mostly seemed grumpy, one helpful young guy but twice the info he gave us was actually wrong! And the manager owns a nappy wearing monkey which he mainly carries around on his back but it also plays with a basketball in the communal areas, I don't know what they are called but it was quite big and made me feel very uneasy walking past it!!!! The rooms are filthy, and the walls are paper thin so you can hear every single persons conversation and vice versa!!! There was a window in the room that faced out to the corridor so no natural light and a buzzer system for "security" which any member of staff buzzed us in at any given time with no question, even when they hadn't seen us before, so what's the point in it!?? On a bright note the location for us was perfect.

During our stay at Wheeler's 3 of the 4 toilets were out of order and only 2 of the 4 showers were working. Although there is a daily cleaner, the efforts into keeping the bathrooms clean is perfunctory at best- in short, they were hideous- dirty and smelly.

The room itself was clean, and very basic, but had an unpleasant smell and no windows.

Like another of the reviewers below we spent much of our time trying to avoid being at the hostel, which made our stay in KL quite hard work and stressful.

The place also had a creepy atmosphere, with a lot of random people hanging around that didn't seem to be staying there. Of the 3 members of staff we came into contact with, 2 of them were rude and made us feel very unwelcome.

The price is cheap, but there are other hostels at a similar price which provide working, and clean bathrooms, and nicer rooms. We had a look at Original Backpackers, which was better for a bit more money, but they unfortunately had no space, so we couldn't move. If you have the time to search another hostel out, do it- this place should be one of your last resorts.

you will not find a cheaper guesthouse in KL. This is very simple the cheapest in town with rooms from 22rm - 35rm for fan room.
I have stayed at wheelers guesthouse on each of my 20+ stays in Kuala Lumpur.
Rooms are clean although theres a smell of some serious cleaningpowder being used to sterialize the rooms.
Staff is friendly and very helpfull in matters about attractions in town or guidens to get to other parts of malaysia (without them making any money from it)
free food on the roof terrace every friday and cheap beers on said terrace every day from 5pm.
good atmosphere and the best location in town.
It might be a bit hard to find as the sign is nearly faded away. it is located on the opposite side of the street from reggeabar. its a tiny entrance and theres a very small shop squeezed in by the entrance.

This was the first hostel we stayed in whilst travelling around South East Asia, with hindsight we should have left immediately but we really didn't know what we could get for our money and lonely planet recommended it.

It is a little tricky to find as you have to enter a stairwell that I can only describe as squalid and climb up a graffitied flight of stairs, the guy working there was very pleasant and tried to help us as much as he could. We had booked a double room with private bathroom, the room had a certain air of prison cell, the bed sheets had been washed but had cigarette burns in them, the a/c was hanging off the wall and the walls were filthy and mouldy. It felt like you needed hazchem suits to enter the bathroom.

The final nail in the coffin for wheelers was several sickly looking hamsters in small cages in the reception.

Apparently the reggae bar next door is a much better place to stay, we ate and drank there and it was fine but a bit pricey.

This place is probably the cheapest around and if your very easygoing about hygiene then go for it. I went in to book a room the day before my arrival and the person at the front never put it in their book so I ended up having to take a dorm when I arrived. From what I could see through the windows into other guests rooms (which is very easy) the rooms are cleaner and better than the dorms, which look like Nike sweatshop accommodation (actually worse, I looked at pictures from expose's human rights journalists have taken for a comparison). My sheets were stained and had holes on them, I made friends with plenty of cockroaches that crawled out from under my bed and the air con was set to a chilly temperature at night so make sure you wear layers. The showers/ toilets are a hit and miss, and the bed frames don't seem to actually be screwed together properly so rock around a fair bit. The vague staff are nice though in a totally camp way.
