Nagasaki International Hostel Akari
Reviewed March 20, 2009

I was staying 2 nights in Akari Hostel while visiting Nagasaki. I was very disappointed when i got there, first the room was quite poor, there was a very bad smell apparently from the tatami floor, the room was small and uncomfortable. The hostel owner was a rude guy and the whole service lacked from politeness. Would go there again!

This is a wonderfully located hostel with great owners who will make you feel very welcome.

I went on a walk in the local neighbouhood with one of the owners & it felt like a walk with a good friend. I learnt a lot about the area and enjoyed it immensely.

The bed was so comfortable that I felt like I was at home and the neighbourhood is quiet so it is easy to get a good night's sleep. The lounge area is very nice although the bedroom was a bit dated but overall this did not detract from a great stay.

There is a lot to see in Nagasaki & I had a great time!

Hostel is very convenient as it is close to the Nagasaki tram station as well as convenience stores, coin laundry shops, restaurants and even tourist spots such as the Meganebashi bridge.

The neighborhood of this place was superb! We were asked to leave our luggage at the reception while waiting for the owners to get back from lunch. The main door was not locked at this time but we were told it would be safe to leave them there as there has not been any previous incidents of this matter. We trusted the owners and went out to explore the neighborhood. We went back to check in and our luggage was there, untouched and safe.

Owners of the hostel were cool and spoke very good English. They had lots of information about the area and places to go to. We were even handed out a personalized neighborhood map which proved rather useful when trying to find certain places.

The place was old but clean, rooms smelled stuffy but was very livable and clean.

Note that there is no elevators though, so it may be a good idea not to bring heavy luggage. Shingo, one of the owners was kind enough to lend us a hand in bringing our luggage up the stairs.

You'd also have to take note of the check-in time. They are out for lunch from 12noon - 3pm. Expect the reception area to be closed with no one to assist. Contact numbers for emergencies are available though in case you need to get in touch with someone when you arrive.
